Alex the Great, S.F.'s beloved influencer rabbit, dies after cancer battle

Alex the Great, the beloved 30-pound rabbit known for cruising around San Francisco in his toy Mercedes-Benz, has died after a months-long battle with cancer.
The large Flemish rabbit underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor on Thursday, July 17, according to his family, who provided regular updates on his health via social media.
Though Alex made it through the procedure, he wound up in the Intensive Care Unit of UC Davis Veterinary the following day due to a complication that arose during treatment.
Alex's owners, Josh Row and Kei Koc, said he 'crossed the rainbow' on the morning of Monday, July 21.
'This is the hardest news,' they wrote in an X post. 'The pain is unbearable.'
The four-year-old rabbit was rescued by Row and Koc from a meat farm in Modesto when he was a small bunny.
Alex attended his first San Francisco Giants game when he was four months old, and quickly rose to social media fame by serving as the team's' 'rally rabbit,' frequently charming attendees in the stands during games at Oracle Park.
Alex also comforted travelers at SFO as one of its therapy animals.
Last year, he even stopped by Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park, where he was invited to meet pop star Chappell Roan.
According to his owners, Alex's health troubles began in May, when he had to undergo emergency surgery at SoMA Animal Hospital to remove a cancerous tumor. Though he was medically cleared to attend Giants games by the start of June, he returned to the hospital last week to get a second tumor removed.
His family noted that Alex had several cardiac arrests during the procedure and 'just couldn't pull through.'
Before he went into his second surgery, Alex's family held a meet-up at Mission Rock for fans to give him some good luck cuddles. They also put out an open call for donations to help cover his medical bills.
Dozens of devastated fans took to social media on Monday to share their favorite moments with Alex and offer their condolences to his family, who have been reposting several of these messages to his Instagram stories.
'We will continue your legacy and spread joy and build a positive loving community,' his family wrote on Monday afternoon via Instagram. 'No words to describe the pain, no time would heal the big hole in our hearts.'

Pop Icon Diagnosed With Cancer at 37 Remaining Hopeful Amid Health Update

Pop Icon Diagnosed With Cancer at 37 Remaining Hopeful Amid Health Update originally appeared on Parade. Jessie J is gearing up for another surgery this year. In a candid update posted on August 8, the "Price Tag" singer shared an update on her life and her health. "I can rest, parent AND release new music. I didn't leave a major label after 18 years to be scared to re write the rules to fit around my life / health. I just have to make it realistic on what I can deliver in all roles in my life," she captioned an Instagram post. "Another surgery needed this year. I can do it. ✔️ Raising a toddler. I can do it. ✔️Releasing new music. I can do it. ✔️ It will look different to what I had planned but that's life, things change and either we panic and get mad that it isn't what is was going to be, or we ADAPT," she continued, adding, "I'm just flowing with life. Learning about who I am in motherhood and when my health goes left unexpectedly." Jessie J was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. She underwent a mastectomy and received good news — all of the cancer was removed from her body. About six weeks later, she was hospitalized after experiencing symptoms of a blood clot. Thankfully, doctors didn't find any clots, but they did notice some fluid in the singer's lungs and she was treated for an infection. Jessie J has previously said that she will undergo reconstructive surgery, which could be the surgery that she's talking about in her latest health update. Fans have been super supportive of Jessie J as she navigates this chapter of her life. She's received numerous well wishes, prayers, and positive vibes on social media. Doobie Brothers Rocker, 76, Gives Fans Exclusive Glimpse Backstage on Tour

Doobie Brothers Rocker, 76, Gives Fans Exclusive Glimpse Backstage on Tour originally appeared on Parade. The iconic 70s rock band The Doobie Brothers are currently on tour — and founding guitarist Patrick Simmons gave fans an exclusive glimpse backstage at their latest stop, the Co-Op Live in Manchester, England. The band played the venue on July 15, and that day, they took to their Instagram stories to share a video of Simmons, 76, walking around backstage before posing with a drawn version of himself featured on a poster for this particular show on the band's current tour, titled the 'Walk the Road' tour. In the video, Simmons — who plays guitar and banjo, as well as providing vocals, for the group — can be seen smiling and making silly faces as he poses for what appears to be some photos. He even took his round glasses off for some shots to better match his drawn counterpart, who features on the poster without spectacles like Simmons sometimes wears. The Doobie Brothers are currently on tour in Europe, traversing the United Kingdom and Ireland for another week before bringing the tour back home stateside for August and most of September. Their next gig will take place in Birmingham, England at the PB Pulse Live Arena on July 17 and their last scheduled date on their website is at the Budweiser Stage in Toronto, Canada on September 18. The band was formed in San Jose, California in 1970 with an original lineup of Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, John Hartman, and Dave Shogren. In 1975, Michael McDonald joined the group to sub in for Johnston while he was dealing with health issues — but McDonald, 73, ended up being a key component who would stick with the band until 1982. He returned to the band in 2019 and is playing on the tour alongside Simmons, Johnston, 76, and John McFee. The band released their latest album, Walk the Road, early last month.
