Temple committee apologises to Muslims hurt by Belthangady MLA's remarks

The Hindu13-05-2025
The trust managing Gopalakrishna Temple at Bhattarabailu in Tekkar village of Belthangady taluk, Dakshina Kannada district, has apologised to Muslims who were hurt by the alleged hate speech made by Belthangady MLA, Harish Poonja, during the 'dharmika sabha' programme of temple's Brahmakalashotsava function on May 3.
The MLA reportedly blamed a section of the Muslims for damaging some tubelights put up by the Brahamkalashotsava organising committee. The MLA questioned the organising committee members for inviting Muslims for the event.
Following a complaint, the Uppinangady police filed a case against the MLA on May 4, charging him of making an inflammatory speech. Mr. Poonja was booked under Section 353(2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
In a May 5 letter to the temple trust, members of the local Muslim Okkoota expressed unhappiness over the allegation made by the MLA.
'We have been living in harmony with all communities and participating in each other's festivities. The baseless comment by the MLA, who represents all communities, deeply hurt us. Hence, we expressed our anguish with the trust through the letter,' Abdul Razak, president of Tekkar Gram Panchayat and organising secretary of Muslim Okkoota, Saralikatte, Tekkar, told The Hindu.
Following a meeting with members of the Okkoota on May 7, the trust issued a letter on the same day, apologising to the Muslim community for adverse comments made during the Dharmika Sabha programme. Thanking the community members for their active participation in the Brahmakalashotsava, the trust said it wanted all communities to continue with living in harmony in the future.
Meanwhile, speaking to presspersons in Mangaluru on May 5, the MLA justified his speech. Mr. Poonja said that he only 'awakened the Hindu society' through his words. The government interpreted it as communal and inflammatory.

Gujarat school play allegedly depicting women wearing burqas as terrorists triggers row

A play during an Independence Day programme at a school in Gujarat's Bhavnagar has triggered a row about the alleged depiction of women wearing burqas as terrorists, The Indian Express reported. Videos of the cultural programme were widely shared on social media. On Tuesday, District Education Officer Hitendrasinh D Padheriya issued a notice to the Municipal School Board Administrative Officer Munjal Badmaliya seeking a report within a week about the programme held at the government school, the newspaper reported. The notice was issued based on a representation made by Bandharan Bachav Samiti Bhavnagar, a social organisation, which alleged that the play had portrayed the Muslim community as terrorists. The organisation demanded action against those behind the play, according to The Indian Express. Rajendrakumar Dave, the school principal, said: 'We only wanted to depict what happened in Operation Sindoor.' 'We did not intend to hurt anyone's sentiments,' he told ANI. 'We conducted this event only to invoke patriotism. If any community is hurt, I apologise.' The district education officer sought details of the programme and asked whether the depiction as has been alleged was intentional, and details of the event held at the school. The Bandharan Bachav Samiti Bhavnagar had alleged that the play was 'an attempt by the school staff to hurt religious sentiments and spread unrest in the public'. 'In the play, girls dressed in Muslim attire (burqa) were shown as terrorists, clearly depicting the Muslim community as terrorists,' the organisation alleged, according to The Indian Express. It added that the Muslim community was angry with the teachers, the organisation said. Badmaliya said that the event is held every year on Independence Day and Republic Day. 'This year it was themed on Operation Sindoor and the bravery of our defence forces, and programmes were held in every school,' the newspaper quoted him as saying. 'Nothing was intentional or deliberate.'

What Is The Punishment For Slapping A CM? Rekha Gupta's Attacker May Face Serious Charges

Earlier, slapping or pushing led to warnings under Section 107/51 CrPC. Now, stricter sections apply, with evidence collection and court proceedings following FIR registration Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public hearing at her camp office on Wednesday morning, police said. The assailant was identified as Rajesh Khimji. BJP sources said that during the public hearing, the accused handed some papers to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta before attacking her. Senior BJP leader Harish Khurana told a news channel that the assailant slapped the Chief Minister and pulled her hair. Slapping someone is considered a crime under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), classified as 'voluntarily causing hurt'. Under Section 115 of the BNS, slapping someone falls under 'intentionally causing hurt,' punishable with up to one year in jail, a fine of up to Rs 10,000, or both. However, Delhi Police have registered an FIR against the attacker of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, charging him with attempted murder. Punishment Based On Circumstances The severity of the punishment can vary based on the circumstances. If the slap prevents a government employee from performing their duties, a case can be registered under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Section 353 of IPC earlier), which may result in up to two years in jail, a fine, or both. If the attack occurs during another serious crime like robbery, the punishment can be more severe. Using criminal force or symbolic attacks intended to scare, without causing physical harm, can still be punishable under the Indian law. Changes In Legal Procedures Previously, incidents of slapping and pushing led to preventive action under Section 107/51 of CrPC, where the accused was presented before a duty magistrate and released after a warning. Now, depending on the situation, additional sections may apply. After registering a case under these sections, the investigating officer will collect evidence, and the matter will proceed in court. If found guilty, the accused can face up to one year in prison and may also be fined. How CM Rekha Gupta Was Attacked During a public hearing at her camp office on Raj Niwas Marg, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was suddenly attacked by a man while engaging with citizens and listening to their complaints. The assailant, identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Khimji Sakariya from Rajkot, handed her some papers before shouting abuses and slapping her. Security personnel quickly restrained him and took him into custody, restoring order at the venue. The Chief Minister, visibly shaken, underwent a medical examination following the incident. Initial police questioning revealed Sakariya's identity, and authorities are coordinating with Rajkot Police to verify his background. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with investigators exploring whether it was a spontaneous act or a premeditated attempt. Some court papers were recovered from the accused, and police said he also attempted to throw stones at the Chief Minister. The incident has sparked serious concerns about the security arrangements for the Delhi Chief Minister. The BJP condemned the attack, and officials confirmed that the Union Home Ministry has been informed. An eyewitness, Anjali, told ANI that the attack was shocking and alarming. She said the incident raised serious concerns about safety during Jan Sunvai, adding that anyone attending should feel secure. 'I was present when it happened. The man was speaking and suddenly slapped the Chief Minister. The police acted immediately and took him into custody," she recounted. Another eyewitness, Shailendra Kumar, who came from Uttam Nagar to raise a sewer-related complaint, described the scene as chaotic. He said, 'The moment I arrived at the gates, there was turmoil because the Chief Minister had been slapped. Such an incident should never occur." Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu assures action on Himachal engineering student's death in Bengal, minor's rape in Chamba

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday assured the Assembly that appropriate legal action would be taken in the Kapil Kumar case in which an engineering student from Hamirpur district died in West Bengal. He also informed the House that a suspect in a rape case involving a minor in Chamba district has been arrested. Replying to two separate motions of attention raised by BJP MLAs Inderdutt Lakhanpal (Barsar) and Dr Janak Raj (Bharmor), Sukhu said that legal measures have already been initiated in both cases. Lakhanpal had sought the government's response on the death of 22-year-old Kapil, who hailed from Bhaged village in Hamirpur. Kapil was pursuing a course at Seacom Marine College, Howrah, since April this year and died under mysterious circumstances on August 9. His uncle, Rakesh Kumar, has lodged an FIR at Sankrail police station in Howrah City, alleging he was murdered. 'The victim's uncle also moved an application with Himachal Pradesh Police. I instructed DGP Himachal Ashok Tewari to take appropriate action. The application for a fair and transparent probe has been forwarded to the Police Commissioner, Howrah, and correspondence has been made by the Himachal Pradesh DGP with his West Bengal counterpart on August 19,' Sukhu said. In another matter, Raj raised concerns over the alleged rape of a 15-year-old orphan girl in Chamba. 'Based on her statement, an FIR was registered on August 18 under Section 65(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, sections 4 and 17 of the Pocso Act, and sections 9 and 11 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. The minor delivered a child earlier this year, leading to the arrest of the main accused. The newborn's DNA profiling has been initiated for paternity confirmation,' Sukhu said, adding that it was a very sensitive matter.
