MG Motor Middle East breaks sales records in 2024

Arab News25-02-2025

MG Motor Middle East enjoyed a record-breaking 2024 by delivering 70,033 vehicles across the GCC, Levant and Morocco, highlighting the British-born brand's continuing rise as one of the region's leading automotive manufacturers.
This milestone mirrored the global achievements of the brand's parent company, SAIC Motor, which reported 4.639 million units in terminal deliveries worldwide and record New Energy Vehicle sales.
The strong regional results were fueled by robust performances in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates. Leading the charge, the Kingdom recorded 24,500 MG sales, further solidifying its position as a key market.
The appointment of Jiad Modern Motors, a subsidiary of the Mohamed Yousuf Naghi Company, as MG's new distributor in Saudi Arabia, further reinforced the brand's long-term commitment to the country. Meanwhile, the UAE followed with 12,900 sales, marking a 29 percent increase over 2023.
Across the GCC, MG achieved a 10 percent overall sales growth, underscoring its successful formula of stylish design, advanced safety features, and strong value for money.
Behind MG's dynamic growth stands SAIC Motor's strategy of deepening reform and accelerating technological innovation.
The company made significant progress in NEV development, alongside the advancement of its 'Seven Technological Pillars,' further strengthening its global research and development footprint. A key driver of MG's success in the region has been the introduction of seven new models in the past year, catering to a broad spectrum of consumer preferences.
These include internal combustion engine vehicles such as the MG Whale, MG3, MG5, MG 7, and RX9, alongside groundbreaking electric models like the Cyberster and MG4 Electric.
By leveraging SAIC Motor's extensive resources, MG continues to deliver cutting-edge vehicles tailored to Middle Eastern markets, blending innovation with performance and value.
In the second half of 2024, parent company SAIC Motor recorded six consecutive months of sales growth. Self-owned brands under the SAIC umbrella, including MG, contributed 2.408 million units for the year.
This synergy benefits MG Middle East by offering greater access to advanced platforms and emerging EV and hybrid technologies, which remain a focus area for the region's future mobility needs.
Tom Lee, Managing Director of MG Motor Middle East, said: 'These latest results underscore our long-term commitment to offering customers in the Middle East high-quality vehicles and exceptional service. Saudi Arabia and the UAE, in particular, have been pivotal to our success, showing a strong appetite for MG's combination of modern design, advanced safety, and value. At a global level, SAIC Motor's strategy around innovation and reform has provided us with the tools to adapt quickly in a competitive market.'
A cornerstone of MG's expansion has been its focus on customer satisfaction, including maintaining a comprehensive parts supply chain and cultivating a robust distributor network.
In 2024, the brand introduced new showrooms and service centers across the Middle East, streamlining after sales care for a rapidly growing customer base.
Strengthening its commitment to seamless service, MG also expanded its parts distribution capabilities with the opening of a second spare parts warehouse in Jeddah. Spanning 5,260 square meters, the new facility enhances efficiency and ensures faster delivery of essential components across the region. Looking ahead, strategic collaborations, investment in local workforce training, and NEV technology rollouts remain key priorities for the brand.

Elon Musk leaves White House but says Doge will continue

WASHINGTON — Elon Musk has said he is leaving the Trump administration after helping lead a tumultuous drive to shrink the size of US government that saw thousands of federal jobs axed. In a post on his social media platform X, the world's richest man thanked Trump for the opportunity to help run the Department of Government Efficiency, known as Doge. The White House began "offboarding" Musk as a special government employee on Wednesday night, the BBC understands. His role was temporary and his exit is not unexpected, but it comes a day after Musk criticized the legislative centerpiece of Trump's agenda. "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending," Musk wrote on X. "The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government." The South African-born tech tycoon had been designated as a "special government employee" — allowing him to work a federal job for 130 days each year. Measured from Trump's inauguration on 20 January, he would hit that limit towards the end of May. But his departure comes a day after he said he was "disappointed" with Trump's budget bill, which proposes multi-trillion dollar tax breaks and a boost to defense spending. The SpaceX and Tesla boss said in an interview with BBC's US partner CBS that the "big, beautiful bill", as Trump calls it, would increase the federal deficit. Musk also said he thought it "undermines the work" of Doge. "I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful," Musk said. "But I don't know if it could be both." Musk, who had clashed in private with some Trump cabinet-level officials, initially pledged to cut "at least $2 trillion" from the federal government budget, before halving this target, then reducing it to $150bn. An estimated 260,000 out of the 2.3 million-strong federal civilian workforce have had their jobs cut or accepted redundancy deals as a result of Doge. In some cases, federal judges blocked the mass firings and ordered terminated employees to be reinstated. The rapid-fire approach to cutting the federal workforce occasionally led to some workers mistakenly being let go, including staff at the US nuclear programme. Musk announced in late April that he would step back to run his companies again after becoming a lightning rod for criticism of Trump's efforts to shake up Washington. "Doge is just becoming the whipping boy for everything," Musk told the Washington Post in Texas on Tuesday ahead of a Space X launch. "Something bad would happen anywhere, and we would get blamed for it even if we had nothing to do with it." Musk's time in government overlapped with a significant decline in sales at his electric car company. Tesla sales dropped by 13% in the first three months of this year, the largest drop in deliveries in its history. The company's stock price also tumbled by as much as 45%, but has mostly rebounded and is only down 10%. Tesla recently warned investors that the financial pain could continue, declining to offer a growth forecast while saying "changing political sentiment" could meaningfully hurt demand for the vehicles. Musk told investors on an earnings call last month that the time he allocates to Doge "will drop significantly" and that he would be "allocating far more of my time to Tesla". Activists have called for Tesla boycotts, staging protests outside Tesla dealerships, and vandalizing the vehicles and charging stations. The Tesla blowback became so violent and widespread that US Attorney General Pam Bondi warned her office would treat acts of vandalism as "domestic terrorism". Speaking at an economic forum in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, Musk said he was committed to being the leader of Tesla for the next five years. He said earlier this month he would cut back his political donations after spending nearly $300m to back Trump's presidential campaign and other Republicans last year. — BBC

Commerce and sports ministers participate in roundtable on Saudi-British sports cooperation

Saudi Gazette report LONDON — Saudi Minister of Commerce Dr. Majid Al-Qasabi has affirmed at the Saudi-UK Strategic Partnership Council that Saudi vision 2030 launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman transformed the Saudi economy and created promising opportunities in many vital sectors. He explained that the Saudi-British partnership is unique, and the UK is the second-largest exporter of services in the world. He added that the two countries can cooperate to establish a global integration system that covers many aspects of sports, tourism, culture, arts, and technology, all of which have become a global language that requires no translation. The meeting was also attended by Saudi Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki, and Sir Chris Bryant, UK's Minister of State for Creative Industries, Arts and Tourism. The roundtable, organized by the National Competitiveness Center in cooperation with the UK Department for Business and Trade, focused on introducing companies to the promising opportunities offered by the Kingdom's hosting of international sporting events, such as the 2034 World Cup. It also addressed opportunities for cooperation in areas supporting the sports sector, such as technology, infrastructure, construction, facility operations, and planning and execution of major events. In a meeting with Jonathan Reynolds, Minister of State for Business and Trade, which was attended by Prince Khalid bin Bandar, Saudi Ambassador to UK, and Neil Crompton, British Ambassador to the Kingdom, Al-Qasabi discussed enhancing cooperation in developing the sports sector in light of Saudi hosting major events such as the 2034 World Cup. They reviewed the progress of initiatives emerging from the economic and social committees of the Saudi-British Strategic Partnership Council, including developments in the negotiations of the Free Trade Agreement between UK and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. During the meeting, the two sides highlighted the importance of the Saudi-British Future Skills Initiative and its impact on developing skills in sectors of mutual interest, in addition to the continuation of the Great Futures Initiative for 2025. The Saudi delegation's agenda on the first day included a field visit to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its facilities. The delegation was briefed on the facilities' capabilities and experience in hosting entertainment and sporting events. The participating entities in the visit included the ministries of Commerce, Sports, Investment and Finance, the Supreme Committee for Hosting the 2034 World Cup, the Public Investment Fund, the National Competitiveness Center, the Saudi Business Center, the National Center for Privatization, and a number of major national companies specializing in sports events, infrastructure, and media. Al-Qasabi arrived in the British capital, London, on a working visit, accompanied by a delegation comprising officials from nine government agencies and 30 leaders from the business sector and major national companies. The visit aims to build economic partnerships in the sports sector between the two countries, strengthen relations across various priority sectors, and raise the level of commercial partnerships.
