Cambodian workers flock home from Thailand after clashes

PHNOM: Hundreds of thousands of Cambodian migrant workers have returned from Thailand following deadly border clashes between the two neighbors, a labor ministry official told AFP on Wednesday. Cambodia and Thailand agreed on a ceasefire starting from Tuesday last week after five days of clashes killed at least 43 people on both sides when a long-standing dispute over contested border temples boiled over into fighting on their 800-kilometer (500-mile) boundary. Huge numbers of returning workers and their families streamed through the Ban Laem-Daung border post between Thailand's eastern Chanthaburi province and Battambang in Cambodia on Wednesday. Most were laden with belongings — suitcases, backpacks, heavy bags, blankets and electric fans — as they trudged on foot through the crossing. Cambodia's labor ministry spokesman Sun Mesa said more than 750,000 Cambodians, including children, had returned since clashes broke out on July 24. 'They feel unsafe and scared in Thailand,' he said, adding that there were reports that Cambodian migrants were attacked by 'gangsters.' There was no separate confirmation of the total of 750,000. A Thai immigration officer told AFP the official figure was 'confidential' but said 'there are many crossing back.' Thai media reports quoted the head of the Thai-Cambodia Border Trade and Tourism Association of Chanthaburi as saying more than 200,000 Cambodians had crossed back. The group said on its Facebook page that about 20,000 crossed on Tuesday and about 30,000 were expected to cross on Wednesday. A total of some 1.2 million Cambodian migrants have been living and working in Thailand, Sun Mesa said. Cambodia's defense ministry spokeswoman Maly Socheata said on Wednesday the situation remained calm along the Thai border and 'our forces are on high alert.' Officials from Cambodia and Thailand began meetings in Malaysia on Monday aimed at de-escalating border tensions. Nearly 300,000 people fled their homes as the two sides battled with jets, rockets and artillery along the rural border region, marked by a ridge of hills surrounded by wild jungle and agricultural land where locals farm rubber and rice.

Weapons Shipment Seized at Yemen's Aden Port

A joint task force of Yemeni security, judicial, and presidential officials on Tuesday began investigating a suspicious shipment seized at the port of Aden containing drone components and espionage equipment, as a UN report warned of an emerging arms trafficking network linking Yemen's Houthi militias with al-Qaeda and Somalia's al-Shabaab. Local sources in Aden reported that the Port Security Directorate in the free zone had recently alerted the public prosecution to a container shipment found to contain fully assembled drone storage systems and jet propulsion devices. Anti-terrorism units were immediately dispatched to the site alongside prosecutors to secure the cargo and begin legal procedures. According to the sources, the cache was discovered during routine inspection operations, with no accompanying documents identifying its origin or intended destination. Officials have so far declined to provide further details, but speculation is mounting that the shipment was destined for the Iran-aligned Houthi militias, which have long relied on smuggled weapons and military supplies from Tehran. Sources dismissed reports suggesting the shipment was intercepted at sea, saying it likely entered the port via official channels with forged paperwork in an apparent attempt to bypass inspections - an effort thwarted by port authorities and vigilant security forces. The latest seizure comes weeks after Yemen's National Resistance Forces intercepted a major Iranian weapons shipment near Hanish Island in the Red Sea. That cache reportedly weighed 750 tons and included various types of military equipment, all bound for the Houthis.

Family of Saudi student killed in UK pay tribute to ‘best of brothers'

RIYADH: Family and friends of Mohammed Al-Qasim, the 20-year-old Saudi student who was stabbed to death in Cambridge, UK on Friday, have been sharing their condolences and memories online. His relatives have also set up a fundraiser to provide families in need in Saudi Arabia with clean water as a tribute. At the time of writing it had raised more than SR30,000 ($8,000). Al-Qasim was on a 10-week placement at the EF International Language Campus in the city when he was killed. Two men from Cambridge have been arrested on suspicion of murder and assisting an offender. Al-Qasim's uncle, Majed Abalkhail, said on X that his nephew's death 'has been a huge shock for all of us — especially since Mohammed came to Cambridge as a student, carrying nothing but dreams and hopes for the future.' 'We truly hope … that this will be the last such tragedy, and that full justice will be served, with everyone responsible held fully accountable. May Allah have mercy on Mohammed and grant him the highest place in paradise.' Abalkhail described his nephew as 'a young man raised upon goodness, and our hearts still weep over his loss.' Al-Qasim's sister, Jana, wrote on X that he was 'a man worth a thousand men, the true meaning of support, strength, and dignity.' 'I never knew the taste of fear for a single day, because I knew Mohammed was my backbone and my support after Allah,' she said. 'With the magnitude of his pride and love for me, I was proud of him and loved him many times more. Since our childhood, I would hear that brothers often annoy, quarrel, and fight with their siblings, but by Allah, he never raised his voice at me once, and I never saw from him anything but kindness and love.' Another sister, Thekra, said: 'O Allah, your servant Mohammed Al-Qasim was the best of brothers. Kind, gentle, and fearful of you among us. He never once raised his voice since the day my mother gave birth to him until you took him back to you.' Abdallah Al-Matrafi, who described himself as a neighbor of the family, said on X that Al-Qasim's 'late father, his brothers and his sons are among the finest people we have known in manners, character, appreciation, respect, and good neighborliness.' 'To this day, we remember them fondly, and we will continue to do so for the rest of our lives.' Professor Fahad Al-Olayan said: 'May Allah have mercy on Mohammed. I was honored to have him as one of my students at the university last semester. He was a hardworking student, eager to learn.' Nawaf Al-Darrab, a friend of Al-Qasim, said he knew the young man to be 'close to Allah … always smiling, committed to his prayers, and forgiving toward everyone.' 'Until we meet again, my beloved and my brother, in the highest paradise with the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous — what an excellent company they are.' In a public statement, his family described Al-Qasim as a 'young man brimming with enthusiasm, with chivalry, and courage,' and said he was 'the family's charisma' and 'his father's support.' 'He was the most compassionate person to ever visit a mother's heart,' they said. The fundraiser set up in Al-Qasim's name can be found at
