Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski makes All-Star game in MLB controversy

New York Posta day ago
Jacob Misiorowski may not even had time for the proverbial cup of coffee in the big leagues and he's already an All-Star.
In a highly controversial move, the Brewers' rookie flamethrower has been elected to the All-Star Game with the fewest appearances of any player in MLB history.
Misiorowski, chosen as a replacement for Matthew Boyd, has tallied just five starts and 25 2/3 innings, breaking the 2024 record set by Pirates ace Paul Skenes of 11 games.

'I'm speechless,' Misiorowski said Friday. 'It's awesome. It's very unexpected and it's an honor.'
While there's no doubting Misiorowski's talent, his selection raises plenty of questions about where the bar should be set for players to qualify.
Misiorowski is 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA and has an impressive 100-mph fastball, but that's an extremely small sample size that doesn't even qualify him for league honors, such as the ERA crown.
Skenes, in comparison, had thrown 66 1/3 innings and tallied a 1.90 ERA to earn his selection. That's roughly 2.5 times the amount of innings and nearly one full run lower of an ERA.

In electing a player with just five career games to his name, MLB is creating a very low floor for players to be part of the Midsummer Classic.
'Jacob Misiorowski is cool. Like really, really cool. 25.2 IP, 33 K, 2.81 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and an insanely bright future…but what are we DOING here?' X user and baseball commentator @discussbaseball posted Friday night. 'He's not a 2025 All-Star.'
Another reason for pushback has been that choosing a player with five starts means passing on others with a bigger body of work, which is heavily factored into awards voting, such as the Cy Young.
Yes, All-Star Game is different since it's a competition and doesn't count in the standings. There is, though, as Juan Soto noted, a financial component.
3 Some believe Christopher Sanchez deserved a spot more than Misiorowski.

Making the team is still an honor to the players and, obviously, pitchers with three to four times the amount of innings have a greater claim to make for a spot.
Both ESPN's Jeff Passan and Jomboy Media's Chris Rose mentioned after the Misiorowski news how the Phillies' Christopher Sanchez is on the sideline despite being 7-2 with a 2.49 ERA spanning 107 2/3 innings. Sanchez's agent previously expressed his frustration with his client not being elected.
'I want to start off by saying Jacob Misiorowski is awesome,'Rose said in a video he posted. 'I think he's going to be great. … With all that being said, what is he doing in the All-Star Game? Five stars into his MLB career? Fewest ever for a guy to make the All-Star Team. Hello, Christopher Sanchez is on the other line and would like to speak to the Commissioner's Office.'
Passan tweeted: 'This is a Cristopher Sanchez appreciation post. That is all.'
The Yankees' Aaron Judge provided the counter, expressing excitement for the Brewers' rookie.
'He's impressive. He's got some of the best stuff in the game right now, even though he's a young pitcher,' Judge said, per ESPN. 'He's going to be a special pitcher in this game for a long time so I think he deserved it and it's going be pretty cool for him and his family.'

USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Tuli Tuipulotu in focus

The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 49 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at former USC All-American defensive lineman Tuli Tuipulotu. Position: Defensive line Years played at USC: 2020-2022 Career highlights: Tuipulotu emerged as an immediate contributor on USC's defensive line as a true freshman in 2020. That year, he played alongside his older brother, Marlon. With Marlon off to the NFL in 2021, the younger Tuipulotu stepped up to help fill the void, earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors. In 2022, however, Tuipulotu took things to an entirely new level. That season, he recorded a remarkable 13.5 sacks, the most of any player in the country. In addition, he had 46 total tackles and two forced fumbles. Tuipulotu was named a Unanimous All-American and won Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, the Morris Trophy (given to the top lineman in the Pac-12 Conference, and the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year award. After USC: Following the 2022 season, Tuipulotu declared for the 2023 NFL Draft, where the Los Angeles Chargers selected him in the second round. It has not taken Tuipulotu long to emerge as a star at the professional level. After being named the PFWA All-Rookie team in 2023, he followed it up with an 8.5-sack campaign in 2024. Still just 22 years old, Tuipulotu appears to be one of the league's brightest young stars on the defensive line.

Police on high alert in France for PSG vs. Chelsea Club World Cup final in US

PARIS (AP) — Tens of thousands of police officers will be deployed in France on Sunday night as Paris Saint-Germain takes on Chelsea in the Club World Cup final thousands of miles away in the United States. French officials have warned that no fan misbehavior will be tolerated after violence in the country marred celebrations of PSG winning its first Champions League trophy in Germany. 'No gatherings will be tolerated on the Champs-Elysées,' Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau told RMC media. 'A total of 11,500 police and gendarmes will be mobilized in Paris on Sunday, and 53,000 throughout France.' French police are faced with a double security challenge, with PSG's match at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey followed on July 14 by France's Bastille Day celebrations. 'Every year, there are troublemakers who want to have fun with violence, who break things, who want to loot. We're going to have to provide security for a huge number of events: fireworks displays, parties,' Retailleau said. Celebrations of PSG's first Champions League title were largely peaceful but degenerated into violence in some areas. A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the western city of Dax during a PSG street party after the final, the national police service said. In Paris, a man in his 20s was killed in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car during PSG celebrations. ___ AP soccer:

Kudermetova and Mertens win women's doubles final at Wimbledon

LONDON (AP) — Veronika Kudermetova secured her first Grand Slam title by teaming up with Elise Mertens to win the women's doubles final at Wimbledon on Sunday, rallying to beat Hsieh Su-Wei and Jelena Ostapenko 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Centre Court. Kudermetova and Mertens were on opposite sides in the final in 2021 but were playing at Wimbledon together for the first time this year. They trailed 4-2 in the third set but won the last four games to seal the comeback. It is Mertens' fifth Grand Slam doubles title, and second at Wimbledon. In 2021, she teamed up with Hsieh to win a marathon final where they saved two match points against Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina. 'I lost that final and it was so painful,' Kudermetova said. 'Today I said to myself, I really want it. And it's mine now.' Hsieh has won the Wimbledon doubles title four times with three different partners. Ostapenko won the 2017 French Open singles title and was looking for a second major doubles title after winning the U.S. Open last year with Lyudmyla Kichenok. ___ AP tennis:
