Andhra govt urges Centre to expedite National Highway projects in state
Shivanath outlined four major demands: six-lane expansion of the Hyderabad-Vijayawada NH-65 up to Punnami Ghat; construction of service roads along the Vijayawada West Bypass (Package 3) to ensure commuter safety; sanctioning of funds for a four-lane road from Gollapudi Junction to Jakkampudi; and creation of emergency subways at Krishna Lanka–MG Road and Ranigaritota to ease urban traffic and improve emergency access. He stressed that the absence of these developments has led to increasing traffic congestion, frequent accidents, and significant delays.
Gadkari assured full cooperation and instructed NHAI officials to review and expedite the proposals. He confirmed his visit to AP on August 2 to lay foundation stones and inaugurate road projects worth Rs 9,500 crore across Sri Sathya Sai, NTR, and adjoining districts. Later, he met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav to discuss railway projects in AP.

Odisha records one of the lowest inflation rates in June
1 2 Kendrapada: Odisha recorded one of the lowest inflation rates in the country in June 2025, with rural inflation at 0.46% and urban inflation at 0.64%, well below the national averages of 1.72% and 2.56%, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI). The figures were shared by B L Verma, minister of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. He was replying to a query from BJD MP Manas Ranjan Mangaraj, noting that the department monitors daily prices of 38 essential food commodities. Price data is collected from 566 monitoring centres nationwide, including 28 in the state. Verma said prices of essential food items remain stable and under control. He highlighted the price stabilisation fund (PSF) scheme, launched in 2014-15 to shield consumers from extreme volatility in agri-horticultural commodity prices and ensure affordability. In 2018–19, the Centre approved the state govt's proposal to create a Rs 100 crore state-level price stabilisation fund, releasing Rs 25 crore as the first instalment of the Centre's share. IPS officer Ajay Sahni to get his third President's Medal
Lucknow: Senior IPS officer Ajay Kumar Sahni, who led 52 encounters, was on Wednesday named for the President's Medal for Gallantry this year. This is the third President's Medal of his career. He was picked for the award for showing 'exceptional courage' during a high-risk armed operation in Meerut on Republic Day (Jan 26, 2020). The President's Medal citation describes the 2020 Meerut operation as "a do-or-die situation in open combat." It praises Sahni's "rarest among rare" gallantry, leadership, and dedication under direct threat to life. In 2020, Sahni, as SSP Meerut, received information about two armed robbers on a motorcycle committing multiple robberies in Transport Nagar police station limits. When intercepted, the criminals opened fire at police and sped towards the Meerut–Delhi Bypass (NH-58).Sahni, along with the Crime Branch's surveillance team, moved to cut off their escape. The suspects, when cornered, opened fire, injuring station officer Dinesh Kumar and head constable Manoj Kumar. While a bullet nearly struck his chest, Sahni led the counterattack. In the ensuing gunfight, Chand alias Kale, a notorious gangster with a Rs 1 lakh bounty and over 40 cases, was killed. The two cops who were injured were also awarded gallantry medals. In Feb 2020, he led the encounter in Meerut in which Shiv Shakti Naidu — the kingpin of Delhi's notorious Naidu gang, involved in an Rs 8 crore heist and carrying a Rs 1 lakh reward — was fatally wounded. In 2020, Sahni was awarded for eliminating Sujit Singh alias Budhwa, leader of the D-9 gang and a Rs 50,000 bounty criminal who escaped from Rampur Jail and was hiding in Azamgarh. Sahni is credited with dismantling the entire D-9 gang, one of eastern Uttar Pradesh's most feared criminal syndicates. During his 2016 posting in Siddharthnagar, police, under his leadership, apprehended several members of the infamous Bawaria gang after a fierce gunfight in which a bullet struck his jacket.

HC imposes cost of Rs 5L on HS Gour varsity, asks for fresh appointments
Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court imposed a cost of Rs 5 lakh on Harisingh Gour Central University, Sagar, for "utterly illegal and arbitrary" appointment of assistant professors in the university and said the university will deposit the "exemplary cost" within 45 days. The HC stated that the university will be at liberty to recover the amount from members of the executive council who participated in its meeting on Nov 14, 2022. The court also set aside the decision taken in the 2022 meeting and restored an earlier decision of the executive council taken in Feb 2020 and said a fresh list for appointment of assistant professors be made according to this decision. The amount of cost received from the university will be divided among MP Police Welfare Fund (Rs 2,00,000.00), National Defence Fund (Rs 1,00,000.00), Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (Rs 1,00,000.00) MP State Legal Services Authority (Rs 50,000.00) and High Court Bar Association, Jabalpur (Rs 50,000.00). Allowing a petition filed by Dr Deepak Gupta from Sagar, the bench of Justice Vivek Jain said appropriate cost needs to be imposed upon the university in defeating the rights of the left-out candidates and trying to protect and save illegally selected candidates. Therefore, an exemplary cost of Rs 5.00 lakh is imposed jointly on respondents the VC and secretary. Dr Gupta in his petition said that in 2010, vacancies were advertised for appointment of assistant professors without mention of vacancies. Later, a modified advertisement was issued in which 76 vacancies were advertised. However, the appointment of 156 candidates was made.
