Kendrapada: Odisha recorded one of the lowest inflation rates in the country in June 2025, with rural inflation at 0.46% and urban inflation at 0.64%, well below the national averages of 1.72% and 2.56%, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI).
The figures were shared by B L Verma, minister of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. He was replying to a query from BJD MP Manas Ranjan Mangaraj, noting that the department monitors daily prices of 38 essential food commodities. Price data is collected from 566 monitoring centres nationwide, including 28 in the state.
Verma said prices of essential food items remain stable and under control.
He highlighted the price stabilisation fund (PSF) scheme, launched in 2014-15 to shield consumers from extreme volatility in agri-horticultural commodity prices and ensure affordability.
In 2018–19, the Centre approved the state govt's proposal to create a Rs 100 crore state-level price stabilisation fund, releasing Rs 25 crore as the first instalment of the Centre's share. The fund is meant to manage price swings in pulses, onions and potatoes.

Govt tracks availability and pricing of essential commodities through regular reviews by the inter-ministerial committee (IMC), which assesses trends and recommends measures such as boosting domestic production and increasing imports. To curb volatility, buffer stocks of pulses and onions are maintained under the PSF and released strategically to stabilise prices.
During 2023-24 and 2024-25, pulses from the buffer stock were processed into dal and sold under the Bharat Dal brand at affordable prices. Similarly, atta and rice are being distributed under the Bharat brand at subsidised rates. To check onion prices, buffer stocks were released from Sept to Dec 2024, with onions sold at Rs 35 per kg through retail outlets and mobile vans in major consumption centres.

Matcha in Demand: How South India is Embracing the Trend

Strawberry Matcha at Dou, Nungambakkam Nirmal Raj, founder of Buddies Café and Dandjo Teas in Ooty, has been selling matcha since 2015. But of late, says the tea merchant, the quantities he has had to procure have more than quadrupled. 'Till a couple of years ago, I used to buy only 500g a month. It's now 8kg a month and rising,' says Nirmal. He's not sure what's driving the surge, but he's planning to ride the wave with a matcha dessert menu soon. It's game, set, matcha everywhere. Namratha Marlecha, founder of Sante Spa Cuisine in Chennai, is also seeing an increase in demand for their matcha dishes. 'We've been around for more than seven years now, and hardly a handful of people used to try our smoothie matcha bowl or matcha pina colada, for the health benefits. Today, almost every table has someone ordering matcha dishes. The demand has pushed us to rework our menu and add more matcha drinks,' says Namratha. A finely ground powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves, matcha involves consuming the entire powdered young leaf, offering a more concentrated dose of nutrients and antioxidants, unlike regular green tea, where you steep the leaves. Once a niche Japanese import, matcha is now riding the social media wave into cafés, kitchens, and even personal tea collections across Chennai. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai | Gold Rates Today in Chennai | Silver Rates Today in Chennai Latshyamitra R says every time she opens her Instagram account, her feed is filled with matcha tea recipes. So much so that the UX designer got curious, bought 30g of ceremonial-grade matcha online, a premium quality powder traditionally used in the Japanese tea ceremony, for Rs 800. 'I made matcha drinks with caramel, strawberry and vanilla,' says Latsyamitra. 'I'm planning to bake next,' she says. Saravanan B V, a brand designer from Ooty, initially tried it for its high antioxidant properties and health benefits. But soon he fell in love with the taste and now collects matcha varieties. Not all matcha tastes the same, says Saravanan. Indian matcha has an astringent taste (a dry, puckering sensation in the mouth) that comes from the altitude difference and the way it is ground, compared to Japanese matcha. The Japanese matcha, says Alexander R K, chef at Dou, Nungambakkam, has a unique flavour profile; a delicate balance of earthiness, umami and subtle bitterness making it a versatile ingredient that blends well with sweet and savoury dishes. 'We are trying to use matcha as salt in barbecue meats and tempura,' says Alexander. 'They are still in a trial phase, but show promise among adventurous diners. We're also exploring matcha-infused sauces and glazes that can complement Asian-inspired small plates and grills,' he adds. Matcha Brownie Café owners and tea merchants say they procure their matcha from Japan or Assam (the only place in India where it is grown). Chota Tingrai in Assam's Tinsukia district is the only tea estate in the country that produces it. 'We've been making green tea at Chota Tingrai using Japanese technology since the 1980s, but matcha requires far greater precision and investment,' says tea manufacturer Mrigendra Jalan of Jalan Industries. The estate is experimenting with the Yabukita cultivar and its Assam equivalent, slowly moving toward Japanese standards with both ceremonial and culinary grades. 'The process is slow and costly, as one Japanese grinding machine costs Rs 40 lakh and produces just 10kg a day,' he says. South India has the potential to grow matcha, says Jalan, but the climate and altitude will influence its flavour profile. 'South Indian tea is not as strong as Assam tea, and less bitter. While Assam works on refining production, demand from Chennai, Bengaluru, and Ooty is already surging, pointing to a future where locally grown matcha could complement imports from Japan.' Trump intended to gift 'Poo-tihn' 'American Bald Eagle Desk Statue', 8-page secret document found in Alaska hotel

White House said the document, left behind at a Alaska hotel, was just a multi-page lunch menu. After President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska Friday, eight pages of a document which was supposed to be secret, were found at the business center of an Alaskan hotel -- possibly left behind by the US team by mistake. NPR reported about the papers adding that it's not known whether they were authentic documents but they included US State Department markings and were found on a public printer. The hotel is about 20 minutes away from where Putin and Trump convened at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, NPR reported. The documents revealed that Trump intended to gift Putin an "American Bald Eagle Desk Statue" and it's not known whether it was gifted to him. The document shared precise locations and meeting time schedules along with the phone numbers of US government employees. The document listed the names of Russian leaders with phonetic spellings, making Putin "Mr President Poo-tihn", NPR reported. NPR posted a menu that included a 'green salad' with 'champagne vinaigrette' paired with surf and turf consisting of a filet mignon with 'brandy peppercorn sauce' and 'buttery whipped potatoes and roasted asparagus' with halibut, a fish found in Russia's arctic waters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? A seating chart shows that Putin and Trump were supposed to sit across from each other during the luncheon. Trump would be flanked by six officials: Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles to his right, and Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff to his left. White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly dismissed the papers as a "multi-page lunch menu" and suggested leaving the information on a public printer was not a security breach.

‘Green nod must for Manimajra housing'

Chandigarh: The environment department of Chandigarh administration has told the municipal corporation that the "user agency" is required to obtain a green clearance from the competent authority for the MC's Rs 700 crore housing project in Manimajra. The department has clarified that the said project falls under category 8(a) of the schedule to Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) notification, 2006, which makes it necessary for it to have a prior environmental clearance. The letter from the environment department to MC clearly states, "The township and area development projects covering an area of less than 50 hectares and/or built-up of more than 1,50,000 sqm fall under category 8(b) of the schedule to EIA notification, 2006, dated Sept 14, 2006, and rules made thereunder, require prior environmental clearance. For all such projects falling under category 8(a) & 8(b) of the schedule to EIA notification, 2006, dated Sept 14, 2006, and rules made thereunder, the user agency is required to obtain prior environmental clearance from the competent authority. " It adds, "The building and construction projects having built-up area less than 20,000 square metres and above 1,50,000 square metres fall under category 8(a) of the schedule to EIA, 2006, dated Sept 14, 2006, and rules made thereunder, require prior environmental clearance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Vitauthority Learn More Undo Further, it is clarified that the term 'built-up area' for the purpose of this notification is the built-up or covered area on all floors put together, including its basement and other service areas, which are proposed in the building or construction projects." This development has come at a time when the cash-strapped MC was looking to dispose of the land as soon as possible to get money. However, with the UT administration now making it mandatory for the "user agency" to obtain environment clearance, the entire process is taking time.
