Hello! He's stolen one of Lionel Messi's records, he's got a wicked free kick on him, and his price tag was $72million. Say hello to Real Madrid's new teenage marvel.

The onset of the Club World Cup followed a rush to conclude transfers in time for it. Hundreds of millions of dollars changed hands in the days before it began. Real Madrid were so set on taking Trent Alexander-Arnold (or 'Trent', as he wishes to be known from here on) that they paid more than £8million ($11m) to speed up his arrival from Liverpool.

The exception to the rule was Franco Mastantuono, who is primed for a dramatic change of scenery, but not until after the Club World Cup finishes. Last Friday, Madrid finalised the terms of a move to the Bernabeu, an investment that will cost them dear. The midfielder, however, is in the U.S. with River Plate, and if they and Madrid advance to the Club World Cup's knockouts, he could play against the team who have effectively already bought him.
Mastantuono is only 17 and, as a South American, FIFA rules prevent him from switching to a European team until he turns 18. He holds an Italian passport but sources have told our Madrid reporter, Mario Cortegana, that the process of hastening his transfer would be unduly complex — so the transfer will complete on August 14, Mastantuono's 18th birthday.
For some time now, Mastantuono has been making headlines in Argentina. Recently, he broke Lionel Messi's record as the country's youngest debutant in a competitive match. Before that, he drew wider attention by lighting up a Superclasico between River and Boca Juniors with a beast of a free kick. Last night, a global audience got a peek at him as he and River overcame Japan's Urawa Reds (and the biggest tactics board in history, below) 3-1 at the Club World Cup.
He's a hot prospect, but he's not coming cheap. So what are Real getting for their dosh?
Considering that Mastantuono is yet to cut his teeth in European football, the figures involved are sizeable. It's no speculative punt, put it that way. River will receive £38.5m — a club-record sale, beating Enzo Fernandez's transfer to Benfica in 2022 — via a release clause but in total, including tax and other fees, Madrid are in for £54m. For context, Endrick cost them £29m from Palmeiras last year.
Watching Mastantuono yesterday, one word came to mind instantly: lively. He progresses play, he has a sweet range of passing — his floated ball to the left wing (top of section) set in motion the attack leading to River's first goal — and his energy is infectious. What we need to discover is how well that skill set will translate when the opposition are Barcelona, rather than Urawa Reds.

Our tactics expert, Ahmed Walid, put the teenager under the microscope to see how his game stood up to scrutiny. River fielded him as a right-sided forward in Seattle but he roamed like a playmaker, to good effect. He is two-footed, he manipulates possession in tight areas, and by the time I got to the end of Ahmed's analysis, Madrid's outlay made more sense. Expecting him to be the second coming of Messi is too much — but he has star potential in his own right.
If you'd asked me to put money on one player who would shake up the world order in the United States, I'd have thrown my life savings at Sergio Ramos. The Club World Cup is the old warhorse in his element, the ego still raging after all this time.
Monterrey, the Mexican side who convinced the 39-year-old to take up a post-European adventure with them in February, are rank outsiders in the U.S., a scenario that the uncompromising Ramos must love. They collided with Inter in Pasadena yesterday and you'll never guess who stole the show.
Ramos drew first blood, gave it the Cristiano Ronaldo 'siu' celebration and generally did his bit to take Inter (who must be knackered after a depressing end to their season and the loss of Simone Inzaghi as head coach) to places they didn't want to go. Jack Lang described the centre-back choosing Mexico over Saudi Arabia or MLS as a 'rebel' move, and that's pretty much Ramos to a 't'. The years are showing but the swagger will persist until the grim reaper comes calling.
Inter got out of dodge with a 1-1 draw, which was as much as they deserved. A little like Xabi Alonso at Madrid, Inzaghi's replacement, Cristian Chivu, has been pitched in at the deep end with next to no preparation time for FIFA's money-spinning tournament. Priority one for him? Restore Inter's vigour, because it's patently flagging.
The fixture list for the 2025-26 Premier League season dropped from a height this morning. Head to our landing page for all the nuts and bolts.
Disclaimer: I'm fully aware that every club plays every other club eventually, and that the precise schedule is largely inconsequential. But to give you a taster, I've identified a few standouts.

Arsenal at home on weekend one — August 16 to August 19 — is sink or swim for Manchester United. An early chasing from Mikel Arteta is Ruben Amorim's worst nightmare. Manchester City versus Liverpool on November 8 will be a useful demonstration of how the balance of power between them lies; likewise, Arsenal-City in September. And set aside November 22 for Thomas Frank's first taste of a north London derby. Speaking of sink or swim.
(Kick-offs ET/UK time. All Club World Cup matches are shown on DAZN in the U.S. and UK, as well as the other channels stated.)
FIFA Club World Cup: Group G: Manchester City vs Wydad, 12pm/5pm — Channel 5 (UK); Al Ain vs Juventus, 9pm/2am; Group H: Real Madrid vs Al Hilal, 3pm/8pm — TNT, Fubo/Channel 5; Pachuca vs Red Bull Salzburg, 6pm/11pm.
Concacaf Gold Cup: Suriname vs Mexico, 10pm/3am — Fox Sports, Fubo, ViX/Premier Sports.
We're 10 games into the Club World Cup, with 0-0 draws running at a rate of 30 per cent. But let's take a moment to celebrate last night's goalless slog between Fluminense of Brazil and Germany's Borussia Dortmund.
Fluminense's goalkeeper, Fabio, is 44. He made his pro debut in 1997 (I mean, Jesus, I was still at school). Yesterday's appearance was his 1,375th, edging him closer to Peter Shilton's all-time record, which officially stands at 1,390. Goals or no goals, it was something to write home about.

‘I asked permission from Jurgen Klopp' – Pep Guardiola receives blessing from Liverpool legend over new Man City arrival

Manchester City's recruitment of former Liverpool assistant coach Pepijn Lijnders came with the blessing of former manager Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola has revealed. Lijnders arrives to Manchester as Guardiola's new assistant coach after a decorated spell as assistant manager to Brendan Rogers and Jurgen Klopp at Anfield following his arrival to England from Holland in 2014. Advertisement The Dutchman has also seen James French join Guardiola's staff as set piece coach, with Kolo Toure also lending a hand to the Manchester City manager for the FIFA Club World Cup campaign, which will see City face Wydad AC in their opening fixture on Wednesday. The new coaching setup at the Etihad Stadium comes after the departures of Carlos Vicens, Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez at the end of their respective contracts, which resembles the major revamp occurring in Guardiola's squad. Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki have all been signed in time for the Club World Cup in what has been a major statement of intent from newly-appointed director of football Hugo Viana, who has replaced Txiki Begiristain. Speaking in his first press conference of the 2025-26 season, Guardiola has offered a personal thanks to the three coaches that left his backroom staff set-up following the conclusion of the previous campaign. Advertisement 'Enormous thank you to Juanma (Lillo), Inigo (Dominguez) from the seasons we had together. And Carlos Vicens as well, like Mikel (Arteta) and Enzo (Maresca), going in his own career, going to Braga – we wish him the best of luck and all the best,' said Guardiola. 'And I try to bring people to help us, not just me but the team, to try to win.' It wouldn't be a stretch to admit that Guardiola's squad have needed some fresh faces in the dressing room and amongst the backroom staff, with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak admitting so himself in his end-of-season review that the club should have been more aggressive in last summer's transfer window in hinssight. Guardiola added: 'There was opportunity of Pep (Lijnders) and James (French), and Kolo Toure was already in the U-18's and we saw him working, and has an incredible reference. Advertisement 'And these people are going to help us to make a good season.' On the subject of recruiting Lijnders in particular, Pep Guardiola revealed the involvement of Liverpool's legendary former manager Jurgen Klopp in approving of the Dutchman's switch to the Etihad Stadium following their hugely successful spell together at Anfield. 'We had a conversation with Jurgen (Klopp) but not about Pep Lijnders,' Guardiola said. 'It was, as always, a long conversation, and in a certain moment I suggested I was thinking about Pep (Lijnders) and he (Klopp) gave me his opinion that was, of course, so high – his right-hand (man) in one of the most successful periods in Liverpool. 'After I took time to decide, reflect. I wasn't in direct touch with Pep (Lijnders) because he was in Salzburg and his last experience was Liverpool (for) many years. I asked permission from Jurgen (Klopp) because I didn't want to interfere. Advertisement 'I said, 'Will it be a problem to talk to him?' and he said absolutely not. So I talked, we talked a little, and in one or two days, we decided let's try; I'm a fortunate guy! All the assistants I've had in my career, wow! Everybody helped me incredibly, I've been so, so fortunate. 'They make me a better, better manager, and I'm pretty sure Kolo (Toure) and especially Pep (Lijnders) will help me. At the end it's a question of back and forth; his knowledge, I drain, and every day since we met together, we talk a lot about tactics, football, training sessions – he's been so inspiring. 'I'm really pleased and we'll see what happens in future.'

Turkish coach backs Real Madrid youngster to improve under Alonso: ‘Thrives on difficulties'

Xabi Alonso's arrival is set to change a lot at Real Madrid, the first being the hierarchy of players Carlo Ancelotti so stringently maintained at the club. While the Italian tactician believed in trusting experience and big names come what may, the new coach is not one to reward fame but one to prioritise performance. Advertisement Younger stars and academy players who step up their game, thus, are expected to see their stocks rise under his tutelage and Arda Guler is one such player who hopes for a complete turnaround in his situation. Turkish manager speaks Speaking to the media in a recent interview, current Antalyaspor manager and former Turkish international Emre Belozoglu commented on Real Madrid's Guler, his situation at the club and how it was expected to improve under the new manager. He began by praising the young talent's ceiling and ability to decide games by coming up clutch and providing sublime passes under pressure. Advertisement 'There aren't many players with the gift and divine talent of Arda Guler.' A more prominent role awaits. (Photo by Juan Manuel) He then expressed his sincere hope and expectation that the new manager Xabi Alonso will give the Turkish talent more opportunities and a regular starting role which he struggled to earn under Carlo Ancelotti. 'With Xabi Alonso, we'll see a very different and more accomplished Arda Guler. He'll improve.' Finally, Belozoglu was asked if Guler should consider a move away from Real Madrid, even on loan, given the tight competition for minutes in midfield. The manager, however, was convinced that the conditions were right for the starlet to bring his A-game to the table. 'I know his character. He thrives on difficulties and on overcoming them. He likes to surf the toughest waves.' Source: AS

Xabi Alonso seriously considering starting Real Madrid youngster vs Al-Hilal

Real Madrid will play their first game of the Xabi Alonso era later tonight as they take on Al-Hilal in their first Group H game of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the USA. All eyes will be on the new manager as fans eagerly await to see how he sets up the team and the starting lineup he picks for his first game in charge. Advertisement The defensive side of things seem pretty much settled with both new signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen expected to start alongside Raul Asencio and Fran Garcia. The likes of Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, and Aurelien Tchouameni are the leading candidates to start in midfield. Kylian Mbappe's possible absence in attack due to a fever has opened up a spot in attack. Arda Guler to start? As such, AS now reports that manager Xabi Alonso is seriously considering handing a start to Arda Guler on the right flank tonight against Al-Hilal. Alonso believes in Guler. (Photo by) Advertisement With Mbappe out, Rodrygo is expected to feature at centre-forward while Vinicius Jr. will keep his place on the left. And, Guler could now be a strong candidate to take the final spot in the Real Madrid frontline tonight. It is no secret that Guler is a player Alonso admires greatly. Bayer Leverkusen have attempted to secure him on loan for the past two summers, but the youngster had closed the door firmly. During their first days working together since June 9, Alonso has taken a very close interest in the youngster. In yesterday's training session, during the 15 minutes open to the press, he was seen giving specific instructions to the Turkish prodigy. It could be a strong indicator that Guler is in line for a starting berth tonight when Real Madrid take on Al-Hilal in their Club World Cup opener. A gifted talent, Guler was unable to nail down a spot for himself in the team under Carlo Ancelotti. But he will hope that things are different with Alonso.
