India Negotiating Trade Pacts With Several Nations, Including US: Piyush Goyal
"The whole world recognises us as the fastest growing large economy. We are contributing 16 per cent in the global growth, our macro economic fundamentals are the best," the minister added.
Addressing the Parliament recently, Goyal said the country will take all necessary steps to protect national interest while negotiating trade deals with countries, as US President Donald Trump imposted fresh tariffs.
According to the Commerce Minister, international agencies look at India as the bright spot in the world economy.
"India has signed mutually beneficial FTAs with the UAE, the UK, Australia and the EFTA nations. We want to achieve such FTAs with more countries," said Goyal, adding that India, through its reforms and MSMEs and industry's efforts, is currently the 4th largest economy and will soon become the third-largest economy.
"We are constantly working towards protecting and promoting our farmers. The government is confident of achieving Viksit Bharat goals. India is progressing towards 'Make in India' with self-confidence," the minister said.
According to the minister, India and the US decided to talk over a mutually-beneficial trade deal aimed to be completed by the fall of this year.
India has signed 13 FTAs with its trading partners. The country is currently negotiating the following FTAs with its trading partners: India-EU FTA, India Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), India-Peru Trade Agreement, covering goods, services and investment, India-Sri Lanka Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) and India-Oman FTA.

US At Risk Of Losing India As Strategic Partner: Ex-Official Amid Trump Tariff Row
Former US Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade and senior foreign policy expert, Christopher Padilla, has warned that the ongoing trade tensions could pose a risk of long-term damage to the India-US relationship. "I'm concerned that for the sake of short-term issues, we're putting this relationship at risk," Mr Padilla told IANS. He also feared that "there will be a long memory" of US actions in India, potentially leading to "a questioning of whether the United States is a reliable partner". "I know from working with colleagues in India over many years that these slights will not be quickly forgotten, and saying that India, which is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, is a dead economy. That doesn't help," he noted. Mr Padilla, who served in the George W. Bush administration and is now a Senior Advisor at Brunswick, a global advisory firm, highlighted that the current crisis stems from President Donald Trump's actions against India's core interests – the pressure to open up the agriculture and dairy sectors and New Delhi's independent foreign policy. "The difficulty of opening the agriculture market, given the structure of the Indian economy, is a core interest, and the other is the independence of Indian foreign policy," he told IANS. On the potential impact of US tariffs on India's exports, Mr Padilla argued that "it will be painful", but Indian exporters could adapt with alternative markets. "When you look at some of the key Indian exports, there are alternative markets for things like precious stones, or have talked a lot about the number of iPhones being made in India. Well, there's a global market for iPhones. If they can't be sold in the United States, they can be sold in other places." On foreign policy, he highlighted that India's relationship with Russia has always been an "irritant" in India-US ties, but Washington had been willing to "live with it" for the larger strategic importance of India vis-a-vis China. But that strategy is undergoing a major shift. Mr Padilla expressed surprise over how the US is "treating China at the moment, much more favourably than India". "So, we've got this strange situation. Where we're seeing significant damage to an important strategic relationship between the US and India, while at the same time, the United States is making apparent concessions toward its most significant strategic competitor in the world," he told IANS. On the possibility of US coercion driving India closer to Russia and China, he believed that there are "internal contradictions in terms of foreign policy interests" among the three countries but stressed that it's "not in the interest of the United States to drive countries toward closer collaboration". Mr Padilla, who was part of the civil nuclear deal and other trade negotiations with India during the mid-2000s, asserted that Washington's arm-twisting tactics that led to the capitulation of other countries were never going to work with New Delhi. "India is a very vibrant democracy. I've experienced that in my dealings with India over many years. We're not dealing with a relatively small country in Latin America or Southeast Asia that might be more willing to compromise on core interests," he noted. Looking ahead, the former US senior official acknowledged that "it's going to be difficult for both sides to find a way to go back away from confrontation", but he was confident that "it can be done". "We have got 20 years of a strong relationship here. There's a firm base of common interest. I'm hoping that things will calm down. We have bigger interests at stake here than just trade and dairy products," he told IANS. Mr Padilla concluded with a piece of advice. "Buckle up, because this isn't going to reach some equilibrium where everything is going to be normal again, I think for the next three and a half years, the only certainty is more uncertainty."

He said that after the court order is out, 'Congress leaders are mum like they have lost the ability to speak". In a wide-ranging interview, Yadav also told News18 that after being chided by the Supreme Court for his derogatory remarks against the Indian Army, Rahul Gandhi is now 'threatening the Election Commission with consequences". How can the leader of opposition talk in this language, Yadav asked. He said it was the opposition that had demanded the revision of voter lists, alleging anomalies. Gandhi, in a press conference, has now alleged voter list fraud. 'The Election Commission has asked him to sign a declaration/oath. But he won't sign it because he knows he is lying. He is lying with the intention to belittle institutions," Yadav said. The union minister also told News18 that the opposition led by the Congress does not stand with the Narendra Modi government because, in a bid to oppose the BJP, it has started opposing the country. 'Even the Supreme Court has rapped Rahul Gandhi for his anti-India rhetoric. It is dangerous that the Congress is quoting Pakistan's fake claims to allege that Operation Sindoor failed. Over the last 11 years, look at the record of the opposition in Parliament. They have not allowed either house to function on the pretext of one issue or the other. In this session, first, they disrupted the House in the name of a discussion on Operation Sindoor; now, after a full-fledged debate on it, they are saying we won't let the house function over SIR. So, SIR is their ploy to not let Parliament function because they don't want the country to move ahead. Now, to the second aspect of SIR. The opposition demanded a revision of voter lists, alleging anomalies. Now, they have a problem that voter lists are being revised. They have consistently attacked the Election Commission in a bid to hide their electoral failures. In fact, they are attacking all democratic institutions by design. The Supreme Court recently chided Rahul Gandhi for derogatory remarks against the Indian Army. He is now threatening the Election Commission with 'consequences". How can the leader of opposition talk in this language? The Election Commission has asked him to sign a declaration/oath under Rule 20(3) b of the Registration of Electoral Rules 1960. But Rahul Gandhi won't sign it because he knows he is lying. He is lying with the intention of belittling institutions. They have a policy of shoot and scoot. Congress knows a debate on EC cannot happen in Parliament because it is an autonomous body, yet it is trying to create chaos. It was Balram Jakhar, former Congress leader and Lok Sabha speaker, who refused such a discussion, stating that the poll panel is conceived as an independent entity. Now, if bills are passed without discussion, they will say the government is bulldozing legislation. I will use this opportunity to urge the opposition to behave responsibly. Casting such aspersions on institutions is detrimental to democracy. To win elections, you need to understand the country's aspirations and offer reliable leadership. Operation Sindoor and then Operation Mahadev have seen big success for our forces, but the opposition did not appreciate it in the Parliament session. Why do you think the opposition does not stand with the Modi government on such issues? The opposition led by the Congress does not stand with the Modi government because, in a bid to oppose the BJP, it has started opposing the country. Even the Supreme Court, the apex court of the country, has rapped Rahul Gandhi for his anti-India rhetoric. When the UPA was in power, terror attacks were so common that people feared going to markets or travelling in trains. Prior to 2014, the terror infrastructure was spread extensively across India. Bomb blasts across our big cities, be it Patna, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Guwahati, Varanasi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and even Delhi, were common. UPA restricted its action to sending dossiers to Pakistan. But under PM Shri Narendra Modi ji, we have adopted a 'zero tolerance to terror" policy. The new normal states, if there is a terrorist attack on India, a fitting reply will be given. Secondly, India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail. Thirdly, we will not differentiate between the government sponsoring terrorism and the masterminds of terrorism. People of India stand firmly behind this approach. So, it is obvious the Congress is opposing it. It is dangerous that the Congress is quoting Pakistan's fake claims to allege that Operation Sindoor failed. This is an insult to the Indian Armed Forces. The BJP strongly and unequivocally condemns the Congress's attitude towards the Indian forces and the innocents who lost their lives. Their families, who were witnesses, have been saying that people were segregated based on religion. Hindus were lined up and shot. But the Congress has the audacity to say they are lying. It is reprehensible politics by Congress.
