There's a softball pitcher in Minnesota who is putting up jaw-dropping numbers, and there's a very high likelihood that she'll shatter the state record for career strikeouts by the time she graduates from United South Central High School in 2026.
Mariah Anderson is a 5-foot-3 superstar who has led her team to the Class A state championship game, and she'll be on the mound for Friday's 6:30 p.m. title tilt against Badger/Greenbush-Middle River.
Anderson is 24-1 this season with 388 strikeouts in 170 innings, according to MNSoftballHub. She has 20 shutouts and seven no-hitters, including three perfect games. A stunning 76% of the outs recorded when she's on the mound have come via strikeout.
Anderson pitched a five-inning perfect game against Blackduck in the first game of the state tournament, and she followed later that night in the semifinals with a 20-strikeout, two-hit shutout against Braham.
According to MNSoftballHub, Anderson struck out 403 batters as a sophomore last season. How accurate are those stats? It's not really clear because the Mankato Free Press reported on May 19 that she had 293 strikeouts over 124 innings, and she's struck out 109 batters in 47 innings since. If that's accurate, she's up to 402 for the season.
Either way, it certainly appears to be a state record. The single season record, per the Minnesota State High School League, was 341 by Aubrey Quern of Dassel-Cokato in 2024.
Anderson is also sprinting towards the career strikeouts record in Minnesota. In the May 19 athlete of the week story from the Mankato Free Press, Anderson was believed to have had 1,264 strikeouts in her career. The 109 she's piled up since then would put her at an unconfirmed total of 1,373, good for second all time.
1,642 Maddie Damon, Kasson-Mantorville, 2010-2015
1,373* Mariah Anderson, United South Central, 2021-2025
1,309 Carlie Brandt, LeSueur-Henderson, 2011-2016
1,178 Lindsey Predovich, Virginia, 1998-2003
1,158 Danielle Schmidt, New Life Academy, 2004-2009
With another year of high school left, Anderson is on pace to shatter the record.
As dominant as she is, Anderson hasn't committed to play softball in college just yet. It's an option, but she's also an incredible gymnast and could go that route.

Bills OL Alec Anderson (knee) out week-to-week

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Alec Anderson is considered week-to-week after undergoing arthroscopic surgery, the team said Thursday. Anderson proved to be a capable backup last season and he made four starts at tackle while playing all 17 regular-season games. He also saw action in all three of Buffalo's playoff games. Anderson played 27 percent of the offensive snaps for a Buffalo position group that allowed the fewest sacks (14) in the NFL. Anderson, 25, went undrafted out of UCLA during the 2023 draft and hooked on with the Buffalo practice squad. Also Thursday, tight end Dawson Knox was on the practice field for the first time this season. Knox (hamstring) began training camp on the active/non-football injury list. Knox, 28, caught 22 passes for 311 yards and one touchdown in 16 games (13 starts) last season. Overall, Knox has 193 receptions for 2,277 yards and 23 touchdowns over 85 games (71 starts) in six seasons with the Bills. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2022. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Busch's leadoff homer, Ballesteros' 3-run double help Cubs beat Brewers 10-3 to avoid sweep

MILWAUKEE -- Michael Busch homered on the game's first pitch, Moisés Ballesteros hit a bases-clearing double and the Chicago Cubs trounced the Milwaukee Brewers 10-3 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep. Milwaukee leads Chicago by one game in the NL Central. The teams meet once more this season, a five-game series at Chicago from Aug. 18-21. Ian Happ homered, Pete Crow-Armstrong went 3 for 4 with two doubles and Kyle Tucker was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Cubs. Milwaukee's William Contreras had his fifth career two-homer game. The two-time All-Star had homered just once since May 23. Cubs starter Shota Imanaga (8-4) struck out eight, walked none and gave up three runs and five hits in five innings. Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta (12-5), who had won his last seven starts, allowed a season-high five runs in four innings. Busch opened the game with a 388-foot shot to right for his 21st homer. Contreras answered in the bottom half with his first homer since June 14. He led off the fourth with an opposite-field shot to right. The Cubs padded their lead with three runs in the sixth and two in the ninth. Crow-Armstrong hit a grounder that glanced off the glove of diving second baseman Brice Turang and into right field for a double that made it 2-1 in the third. Ballesteros hit his three-run double later in the inning. Peralta struck out three and has 1,083 for his career, passing Teddy Higuera (1,081) for third in franchise history. He trails Yovani Gallardo (1,226) and Ben Sheets (1,206). Cade Horton (4-3, 3.67) pitches for the Cubs on Friday in the opener of a series against visiting Baltimore. José Quintana (7-4, 3.50) is the Brewers' scheduled starter for Friday as they welcome Washington and Mitchell Parker (7-10, 4.91).
