Toyota unveils latest RAV4, 1st to incorporate new software system

Toyota Motor Corp. on Wednesday unveiled the latest RAV4 to be rolled out in Japan, North America and Europe in the current fiscal year through March, with the revamped model of the compact sport utility vehicle to be the first to incorporate its new software system.
"RAV4 marks the start of our journey in building software-defined vehicles," Simon Humphries, chief branding officer of the Japanese automaker, said in the world premiere for the all-new SUV featuring the Arene software development platform, to be available as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid.
Like smartphones, software-defined vehicles can receive updates that add new features or enhance existing ones, allowing customers to upgrade their cars without buying a new vehicle.
The announcement on the sixth-generation RAV4 -- one of Toyota's most popular models worldwide -- comes as overseas automakers like U.S.-based Tesla Inc. and Chinese EV makers gain momentum with software-centric vehicles.
In the new RAV4, the Arene system was used to develop software powering the new multimedia system's cockpit voice agent and center display, as well as advanced safety technologies, Toyota said.
The RAV4 has helped drive the SUV trend and is especially favored in the United States. Toyota sold around 1.04 million units in 2024 globally, making up around 10 percent of the automaker's total sales.
According to Toyota, the RAV4 is now sold in 180 countries and regions.

It also said that Trump said "the U.S. loves to have Chinese students coming to study in America," although his administration has vowed to revoke some of their visas.

China issues rare earth licenses to suppliers of top 3 US automakers, sources say

BEIJING/WASHINGTON, June 6 (Reuters) – China has granted temporary export licenses to rare-earth suppliers of the top three U.S. automakers, two sources familiar with the matter said, as supply chain disruptions begin to surface from Beijing's export curbs on those materials. At least some of the licenses are valid for six months, the two sources said, declining to be named because the information is not public. It was not immediately clear what quantity or items are covered by the approval or whether the move signals China is preparing to ease the rare-earths licensing process, which industry groups say is cumbersome and has created a supply bottleneck. China's decision in April to restrict exports of a wide range of rare earths and related magnets has tripped up the supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world. China's dominance of the critical mineral industry, key to the green energy transition, is increasingly viewed as a key point of leverage for Beijing in its trade war with U.S. President Donald Trump. China produces around 90% of the world's rare earths, and auto industry representatives have warned of increasing threats to production due to their dependency on it for those parts. Suppliers of three big U.S. automakers, General Motors, GM.N, Ford F.N and Jeep-maker Stellantis got clearance for some rare earth export licenses on Monday, one of the two sources said. Japan brokerages donating shareholder perks to help kids in poverty
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese securities firms are donating the food and beverage gifts they receive as shareholder perks through their trading activities to nonprofit organizations to support children living in poverty amid inflation. The Japan Securities Dealers Association started the program in 2020, and around 2,300 donations had been made by March this year. Under the program, a list of shareholder perks is presented to registered organizations channeling the goods to recipients each week and the organizations then convey their requests to the securities firms. As of April, 61 companies and 48 organizations had registered with the program. Around 11 tons of rice and 8,600 liters of beverages have been donated, with rice and ready-made foods such as curry among the popular products. IwaiCosmo Securities Co. previously distributed shareholder perks to younger employees via a lottery as part of its welfare program, but now donates rice and canned goods to organizations. The Osaka-based brokerage has received feedback that its donations were delivered to single-mother households and served at a gathering of children. "We feel it is significant that goods are being used by people who really need them," a company official said. Monex Inc. has been donating shareholder perks to various organizations across the country since 2024, with an official saying it intends to continue using the program as it is difficult to find recipients on its own. NPO Bridge for Smile, which supports children and young people who cannot rely on their parents, receives donations of food and disaster stockpiles on a regular basis through the program.
