Putra Heights fire victims receive RM212,000 relief from Central Spectrum and collaborators

Central Spectrum chief executive officer Mohd Zapi Abdullah said the contribution will be channelled directly to Tabung Selangor Prihatin to provide vital assistance to affected residents and their families. 'Our collective contribution of RM212,000 is a reflection of our deep commitment to standing with the community during difficult times. 'It is during moments like these that unity, compassion and swift action truly matter,' he told Bernama during Central Spectrum's Raya Open House 2025 at its Sales Gallery in Pulau Indah here yesterday. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari was also present at the event, alongside community members, corporate partners and dignitaries. The fire incident on April 1 destroyed 81 homes with structural damage exceeding 40 per cent, while 81 homes were partially destroyed. Another 57 homes were impacted but not burned, and 218 homes, including those in Kampung Tengah, Puchong, were unaffected. In line with its tradition of community care, Central Spectrum also presented duit raya to students from Maahad Tahfiz Darul Furqon, Pulau Indah, to bring festive cheer and reaffirm its commitment to nurturing future generations. Mohd Zapi also announced upcoming developments, including a waterfront residential project at Laguna Park and a logistics gateway in Precinct 1B, Pulau Indah. 'These projects are set to drive growth and innovation across Pulau Indah over the next four years. With a steadfast focus on community empowerment, sustainable development, and humanitarian impact, Central Spectrum continues to shape a future where business success goes hand-in-hand with social responsibility,' he said. Decade-old scheme: Company director charged with cheating 3 Singaporeans, Malaysian
JOHOR BAHRU: A Singapore-based company director pleaded not guilty in the Johor Bahru Sessions Court on Tuesday (Aug 12) to four charges of cheating three Singaporeans and a Malaysian of RM155,000 in a company investment scheme a decade ago. Chong Kok Ming, 54, a Singapore permanent resident, is jointly accused with a Singaporean man still at large of deceiving Lim Swee Chong, Lim Swee Joo, Ho Sang Bin and Puah Kot Choon into depositing money into the account of a Malaysian-registered company. The accused allegedly made false promises, inducing the victims to believe they would be registered as shareholders in a local company and entitled to annual dividends. Losses amounted to RM71,250 each for Lim Swee Chong and Lim Swee Joo, and RM6,250 each for Ho Sang Bin and Puah Kot Choon. The alleged offences took place at a bank in Jalan Cengal, Taman Makmur, Batu Pahat, on Oct 15, 2014. He was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, read with Section 34, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Chan Lee proposed a bail of RM15,000 for each charge. Chong's lawyer, K Veeranesh, sought a lower sum, citing his client's monthly income of SGD10,000 and the fact that he supports his wife and two children, aged 21 and 25. Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail set bail at RM20,000 in total for all charges, with one surety, and fixed Sept 17 for case mention.

Singapore director charged in RM155k cheating case involving Malaysians
JOHOR BAHRU: A Singaporean company director pleaded not guilty in court today over cheating allegations involving three Singaporeans and a Malaysian in a RM155,000 investment scheme. Chong Kok Ming, 54, a Singapore permanent resident, is accused alongside another Singaporean man still at large of deceiving four victims into depositing money into a Malaysian company's account. The victims were allegedly misled into believing they would become shareholders and receive annual dividends from the investment. Lim Swee Chong and Lim Swee Joo reportedly lost RM71,250 each, while Ho Sang Bin and Puah Kot Choon suffered losses of RM6,250 each. The offences allegedly occurred at a bank in Batu Pahat on October 15, 2014. Chong was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' jail, a fine, or both. The prosecution proposed a bail of RM15,000 per charge, but Chong's lawyer requested a lower amount, citing his client's financial responsibilities. MP: Sandakan risks losing economic spillovers

Kuala Lumpur: Sandakan MP Vivian Wong warned that Malaysia risks missing out on economic spillovers from rapid development in Kalimantan and the growth of international shipping routes if action is not taken soon. 'Sandakan's potential is already clear. The government must act now,' she said, when debating the 13th Malaysia Plan in parliament. Advertisement Vivian also said the development imbalance in Sabah has persisted for too long, despite the East Coast being home to nearly half the state's population. 'Sandakan, as the second-largest city in Sabah, has a unique strategic advantage, it has both an international port and airport, rich natural resources, and is located at the heart of the East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) economic corridor,' she said. She proposed that Sandakan be declared a Special Economic Zone to attract investments in downstream and manufacturing industries, which would in turn create more quality job opportunities for locals. Vivian also called for the construction of an integrated border checkpoint between Sandakan and Kalimantan to speed up cross-border trade and strengthen the East Coast's role as a key logistics hub within the Bimp-Eaga growth zone. 'This could place the East Coast of Sabah as a key development focus in the regional growth map and reinforce Malaysia's position in Asean,' she said. She also highlighted the green and blue economy potential in Sandakan, given its abundant marine resources and reputation as a world-class ecotourism destination. 'Sandakan has the potential to become the country's centre for fisheries, cruise tourism and green trade. But to realise this, infrastructure development must be prioritised.' Among her proposals were the construction of a dedicated tourist terminal to nearby islands such as Pulau Berhala and Pulau Selingan, the opening of direct international flight routes from Sandakan to Hong Kong, Guangzhou or Singapore, and upgrading of the Sandakan Airport. On maritime development, Vivian urged that Sandakan be developed as a 'Makassar Strait Transshipment Hub,' in line with its strategic location along a key shipping route between China and Australia. 'The LKIM fisheries complex must be equipped with proper landing jetties, cold storage facilities, and a stable supply of subsidised diesel.
