Even after the addition of RJ Harvey, the Denver Broncos have been in the market for more running back help. With Sean Payton looking to have multiple running backs on the roster, another running back was on the table to be added.

One of those top options for the Phillies comes from the Jacksonville Jaguars and is in the final year of his deal. However, in an interview ahead of OTAs from The Coachspeak Index on Twitter/X, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen shut down any potential trade for running back Travis Etienne Jr.
"He's done everything we've asked him to do, and more," said Coen. "There's been a consistency. He can shine in ways in space... He's done a great job. I don't really understand some of the stuff I've kind of seen out there. That's absolutely inaccurate."
Coen shutting down the trade rumors surrounding Etenne is bad news for the Broncos. Etienne was one of the best options remaining for the Broncos in the trade market. While there are other options, Etienne was a great option for the Broncos to target.

At just 26 years old, Etienne would've been a young, dynamic running back to pair with Harvey. While he struggled in 2024, his previous two seasons were solid.

Etienne had 558 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in 2024, 1,008 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in 2023, and 1,125 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 2022.
But one of Etienne's calling cards is his receiving ability. Across three seasons, Etienne has 1,046 receiving yards and 1 touchdown on 132 receptions. His receiving totals aren't immense, but he has been a staple of the receiving game in Jacksonville.
Harvey, while a great running back, doesn't have the dual-threat ability that Etienne has. If the Broncos were to add another running back, Etienne would've been one of the best options available on the market.

However, Coens' comments shut down the trade rumors, taking one of the top options on the market off the board for the Broncos. While the Broncos will have other players they can acquire to fill that role, Etienne would've been one of the best options they could've added.

Saints coach Kellen Moore makes key roster decision before Preseason Week 2 matchup against Jaguars

Saints coach Kellen Moore makes key roster decision before Preseason Week 2 matchup against Jaguars originally appeared on The Sporting News The New Orleans Saints are officially handing the reins to rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, who will start Sunday's preseason matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Kellen Moore confirmed the decision, according to Adam Schefter via his X account. In his preseason debut, Shough threw for 165 yards and a touchdown, bouncing back from a pick-six with a 54-yard strike that showcased his ability to respond under pressure. That outing added fuel to the conversation about whether he could rise quickly in the Saints' quarterback competition. With Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener also competing for playing time, this game gives Shough a prime opportunity to prove he can command the offense against an aggressive Jacksonville defense. As Hayden Reel of Canal Street Chronicles notes, the Saints' passing attack has room to rebound, and Shough will be at the center of that effort. Moore has made it clear that all three quarterbacks will continue to see action this preseason, but starting against Jacksonville puts the spotlight firmly on Shough. A strong performance could tilt momentum in his favor as the Saints evaluate who gives them the best chance to win heading into the regular season.

Broncos encouraged to cut productive third-year star before season starts

Broncos encouraged to cut productive third-year star before season starts originally appeared on The Sporting News With two preseason games left to play, the Denver Broncos still have some tough decisions to make when it comes to forming their initial 53-man roster. The most interesting decisions will come at the running back position. With six running backs on the roster who all have a case to be on the team, the Broncos are going to have to part with a player or two that they don't really want to part with. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey hold two spots on the roster and with the team expected to keep four running backs, that leaves four players fighting for two spots. Ahead of last week's preseason opener against San Francisco, Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime would have been the favorites for those spots. But with the way Tyler Badie and Blake Watson played in that game, that could now be flipped. All four running backs should get ample opportunity to state their case in the last two preseason games, but Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report feels that McLaughlin should be kept off the final roster. "Much has been made of the battle between veteran J.K. Dobbins and rookie R.J. Harvey to start at running back for the Denver Broncos in 2025. What has flown under the radar a bit is the logjam the team now has at the position. Someone is going to be the odd man out—and that could be third-year pro Jaleel McLaughlin. McLaughlin is a decent player. He set the NCAA's all-time rushing record at Youngstown State and averaged a respectable 4.4 yards a pop on 113 carries in 2024. He's also a capable receiver out of backfield. But Harvey and Dobbins are locks to make the roster. Audric Estime, who was drafted by the current regime a year ago, likely is as well. Assuming the Broncos carry four running backs into the regular season, that leaves one roster spot for either McLaughlin, Tyler Badie or Blake Watson. With Badie and Watson impressing in camp, McLaughlin's days in the Mile High City could be numbered", wrote Davenport. It would be tough for the Broncos to cut McLaughlin. He was undrafted in 2023 and is definitely on the smaller side as far as running backs are concerned, but he also answers the bell every time his number is called. In 2023, he was probably the team's most explosive running back and last year he posted respectable numbers despite still not being a huge part of the Denver offense. McLaughlin has rushed for 906 yards in his first two seasons, but the best number on the stat sheet is the 4.8 yards per carry that he has averaged. He also had 55 career receptions and four receiving touchdowns. READ: Nik Bonitto predicted to sign with NFC South team in 2026 Davenport's assumption that Estime is a "lock" to make the roster is a bit off as well. Estime is on the roster bubble as much as anyone in Denver, even if he was part of last year's draft class. He's still young, but if the Broncos are picking between McLaughlin and Estime, McLaughlin is probably the safer bet. The Broncos will closely evaluate these running backs in the last two preseason games, starting with one against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday night. It seems inevitable that some tough cuts will be made, but one could argue that out of the four running backs in question, McLaughlin should be the one in the safest position. If the Broncos were to cut McLaughlin, they would have to hope he slipped through waivers without being claimed in order to put him back on the practice squad, but that would probably be wishful thinking. Broncos' updated depth chart for preseason game vs. Cardinals

The Denver Broncos are set to face the Arizona Cardinals in their second preseason game tonight (Aug. 16). Ahead of that matchup, the Broncos released an updated depth chart, but fans should take it with a grain of salt. NFL rules require the team to release a depth chart during preseason. It has become clear over the last two years, though, that coach Sean Payton does not take the preseason depth chart very seriously, and he only releases it because the team is required to. Denver calls it an "unofficial" depth chart, despite it coming straight from the team. This year, Payton has continued his trend of making rookies prove their worth by placing them below veterans across the depth chart. So, while keeping in mind that it should be taken with a grain of salt, here's a look at the Broncos' "unofficial" depth chart going into Week 2 of NFL preseason. Denver Broncos Depth Chart Quarterback (3) No surprises on the quarterback depth chart. Stidham will serve as the primary backup again this season, and Ehlinger might be bumped down to the practice squad when the 53-man roster is set at the end of preseason. Running back (6) It wouldn't be shocking to see the Broncos carry four running backs on the active roster. Don't read into Harvey being listed as RB6 on the initial list -- Payton's initial depth charts are never kind to rookies. Tight end/fullback (7) Engram is the team's top receiving threat at the position, and Trautman is safe as a blocking TE. Burton is back as the team's fullback, and Adkins fills a hybrid role. Krull, Lohner and Prieskorn might be competing for one final spot. Wide receiver (12) If the Broncos plan to carry six receivers on the 53-man roster, the favorites are pretty easy to project. But everyone will get an opportunity to impress this summer. Offensive line (16) All five starting offensive linemen from last year are returning, so the competitions will be for the backup spots this summer. The interior backups will be asked to play both guard and center, and the backup tackles should be able to play on the left and right in a pinch. Defensive line (10) Third-round pick Sai'vion Jones improves the team's depth, and Eyioma Uwazurike will look to have a breakthrough campaign in his second season back from a gambling suspension. Outside linebacker (7) Denver's already-deep room got even deeper this spring when the team drafted Robinson, but his biggest contributions might come on special teams as a rookie. Inside linebacker (9) The inside linebacker competition will be fascinating to watch this summer. Singleton is coming back from a torn ACL, and he'll turn 32 in December. Bailey has impressed early in camp, so he'll be a key player to watch in preseason. Cornerback (10) Again, don't read into Barron being buried as a rookie. He is likely set to serve as the team's nickelback this season with McMillian providing depth. Safety (8) It's hard to predict how the safety room will shake out, but there are several contenders to win a spot on the active roster based on their special teams contributions. Special teams (3) Jackson will be a UDFA to watch this summer as he'll potentially get a good amount of reps both at receiver and on special teams. Denver will trim the roster down to 53 players by Aug. 26, then the club will build a 16- or 17-player practice squad. Last year, the team's initial practice squad included Burton, Tillman, Bailey and Badie. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
