By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: The condition of the road is getting worse by day. BEAUFORT: Residents here want the relevant authorities to expedite repairs on Jalan Kg Balibata and Jalan Kg Binunuk that are severely eroded due to repeated floods. They worry that further disasters could completely cut off the vital link between the villages and Beaufort town. Resident, Johawalia Kimsin, told Daily Express that the government had already allocated RM5 million to a contractor for maintenance, but delays could prove disastrous. 'If the erosion worsens, the road may collapse entirely, making repairs even harder,' he said. The road is the only access route for villagers to reach Beaufort for essentials, school and medical care. A total collapse would isolate residents, including schoolchildren, pregnant women and emergency responders.
Advertisement Adding to the problem, heavy lorries continue to use the weakened road, accelerating the damage. Johawalia called on the Public Works Department to restrict heavy vehicles and ensure immediate repairs to safeguard the community. 'Without action, emergencies like fires or medical crises could turn deadly if rescue teams cannot get through,' he said. With flood risks looming, residents demand swift intervention to prevent a full road collapse, protecting thousands who rely on this critical lifeline. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Drone deployed after storm frees cow set for Aidiladha sacrifice
KOTA BARU: A trader has turned to modern technology in a race against time to find a missing cow meant for sacrifice during tomorrow's Hari Raya Aidiladha. Mohammad Alwi, 35, has been using a drone to scour the surrounding area near his home here after a cow belonging to his father, valued at about RM5,000, went missing during a thunderstorm on Wednesday. He said the cow, which had been prepared for korban tomorrow, broke free from its tether during heavy rain and strong winds, and has not been seen since. "I've been searching around my village and nearby areas since yesterday, but there's still no sign of it," he said when met at his home today. Determined not to give up, Mohammad deployed his drone – equipment he has been using since early this year to monitor and retrieve his livestock whenever they wander off. "This isn't the first time I've used a drone to find my cows. "Usually, I'm able to track them down within hours. But this time, it's been more difficult, maybe because of the weather," he added. Mohammad, who has been involved in small-scale cattle farming in addition to running a business in Gua Musang, said he was especially disheartened as the cow had been reserved for a korban ceremony by his father's family. "I just hope I can find it in time. This isn't just about money – it's about fulfilling a religious duty. Many people are relying on this," he said. Despite the setback, Mohammad remains optimistic and continues his search, drone in hand, hoping the animal will turn up before the important festival begins tomorrow.

Kasigui water supply project to be operational by end of June — Shahelmey
Shahelmey KOTA KINABALU (June 5): The Kasigui Urgent Water Supply Scheme (UWSS) project in Penampang is expected to be operational and begin producing treated water by the end of June, said Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. He explained that the project, undertaken by Jetama Sdn Bhd, experienced a one-month delay from its original schedule due to setbacks in the concreting works for the main slab. 'The concrete slab is now complete and modular units are currently being installed,' Shahelmey told reporters during a press conference at the Public Works Department (JKR) headquarters in Sembulan on Thursday. Originally slated for completion by the end of May, the project was delayed due to unpredictable weather conditions from February to May, he added. 'I sincerely hope it will be completed as promised. Once operational, the Kasigui UWSS will supply five million litres per day (MLD) of treated water into the system, boosting overall supply for Kota Kinabalu and Putatan,' he said. Shahelmey also noted that the Telibong 2 Phase 2 pipeline, expected to be completed by end of June or early July, will help channel additional treated water to northern Sepanggar and northern Kota Kinabalu. 'With that, we anticipate having sufficient water supply for all three areas,' he added. The Kasigui UWSS is part of the state's initiative to enhance water security and alleviate shortages, particularly in southern Kota Kinabalu and Putatan.

RM7 million allocated for drought mitigation in Malaysia's rice granaries
Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Arthur said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops. Bagan Serai: The government has allocated RM7 million for infrastructure upgrades to minimise drought impact on key rice production areas of Malaysia. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops. 'It is mainly to ensure that the water channels are functioning and can deliver water to the paddy plots, even if the water volume is slightly lower than usual. 'This is also one of our ways to minimise the potential negative effects on farmers' income, especially during drought seasons,' he said after officiating the 2025 Perak State-Level Agricultural Machinery and Equipment handover ceremony at Dewan Dato' Zainal Abidin Zin, here, today. Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a statement, indicating that six areas in Peninsular Malaysia are now at Level 1 (alert) for three consecutive days, due to ongoing hot weather. The affected areas include Larut and Matang, Kuala Kangsar, and Perak Tengah in Perak, Machang and Kuala Krai in Kelantan, and Bandar Baharu in Kedah. In a separate matter, Arthur said that his ministry will strengthen collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies to combat cattle smuggling activities from Thailand, which are believed to threaten the country's food security. He said enforcement actions against individuals involved in unethical activities are under the jurisdiction of the respective state governments. 'Therefore, a comprehensive engagement session between state and federal governments is essential, to harmonise laws and prevent conflicts which could undermine the nation's food biosecurity,' he said. He added that one of the main factors contributing to smuggling activities, particularly during festive seasons, is the high demand for beef, coupled with the sector's self-sufficiency level (SSL) still falling short of the targeted benchmark. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
