The Property Brothers reflect on rise to DIY stardom
Drew and Jonathan Scott are household names, known for their playful banter, attention to detail and commitment to quality on the home renovation projects they film for television shows such as "Property Brothers," "Celebrity IOU" and "Brother vs. Brother." The 47-year-old identical twins — Jonathan, a licensed contractor, and Drew, a real estate agent — didn't set out to become the most famous siblings in the home improvement industry. Still, they have embraced the journey and sit at the helm of what could easily be termed an empire, with a production company, multiple lines of home furnishings and décor and even a children's book series called "Builder Brothers."
Firm Foundations
The twins got their start in Calgary, Alberta. 'We grew up on a ranch, and we were always handy. So, we decided right out of high school to start renovating houses to make money to go after our creative endeavors,' says Drew, who set his sights on being an actor and director.
'We bought a $500 infomercial course that promised you to 'make millions with no money down.' They got our money; however, we did learn a couple of things that allowed us to buy our first house for only $250 out of pocket,' says Jonathan, who had aspirations of becoming an illusionist à la David Copperfield. 'That's how we launched into it. Lo and behold, we were good at real estate.'
After about 10 years of flipping homes, Drew felt the pull of acting once again. 'I started getting host auditions as a real estate expert,' Drew says. At first, he dismissed the idea, hoping to be a film actor. But after talking with Jonathan, he reconsidered. 'We thought we could probably build a brand around this. We know how to design houses. What if we do what we were doing with clients locally for a larger national or global audience?' Soon after, "Property Brothers" launched in 2011 and became a top-rated HGTV staple. Other hit shows including "Backed by the Bros" and "Buying and Selling" followed. Ever entrepreneurial, the pair, who both now reside in Los Angeles, has become the largest home show producers in the country.
Building New Things
While the duo's audience may be most familiar with their on-air work, the Scott brothers are increasingly making a name for themselves in the world of retail products. Ten years ago, they launched their Scott Living and Drew & Jonathan Home brands, featuring an ever-growing collection of wallpaper, rugs, lighting, textiles, furniture and more. Since 2015, they've collaborated with licensing partners to create more than 12,000 unique SKUs for retailers from Amazon and Wayfair to Macy's and Rooms To Go. The term 'empire' isn't a stretch: As of early 2025, their products had netted more than $3 billion in retail sales.
It may be natural to assume that the more successful the Scotts become, the less they're getting their hands dirty. While they do have a capable team to assist, they're still in the thick of the real work that goes into transforming properties — the work that catapulted them to stardom in the first place. (On the day of our interview, Jonathan came in brushing sawdust off his shoulders, having raced over from a renovation project.)
It's also personal for them: They recently completed a project for their parents, who moved from their dream home in Banff, Canada, to Los Angeles to be closer to the grandkids (Drew shares two kids with his wife, Linda, and Jonathan has two stepchildren with his fiancée, actress Zooey Deschanel). 'We had to make sure the house was everything they could ever want — that it was comfortable and that there were elements that made them feel the nostalgia of the mountains and the beauty of the rustic lifestyle,' Drew explains. 'It was a gut renovation of an 80-year-old Spanish style home in Santa Monica,' Jonathan says, finishing his brother's thought — a common occurrence. 'Nothing had ever been updated in the house, and it was in dire need of everything.' The project was documented for HGTV and the brothers shared behind-the-scenes insights on their YouTube channel. The result is a light-filled, functional house that has become a treasured home for the senior Scotts.
Good Work
Some made-for-television home renovation shows are plagued by rumors of shoddy craftsmanship and productions carting away décor and furniture when the filming stops. 'That would never work for a family in real life,' Drew says. 'I'm like, 'No, let's actually help families.' We've done 650 episodes or more of our shows (combined) now, and that's always been our philosophy. It's got to be done right whether a camera is there or not.'
That ethos of improving lives and giving back to the community flows through into their philanthropic endeavors as well. In 2017, the brothers were named Habitat Humanitarians, the highest recognition by Habitat for Humanity, and have led fundraisers and home builds across the country. Additionally, Jonathan sits on the board of electrification nonprofit Rewiring America and Drew sits on the board of The Environmental Media Association, an organization dedicated to encouraging more sustainable production. They also help in less public ways: During the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, Jonathan Deschanel offered their home to firefighters to use as a basecamp.
They feel like they're just getting started. In 2024, the Scott brothers partnered on a first-of-its-kind partnership called The Healthy Home Innovation Fund to invest in innovations that can help tackle the most pressing issues facing homeowners, renters, builders and others. The organization will help fund new ideas in smart home technologies, energy efficiency, digitization, safety and more.
No matter what new endeavor they dream up or project they tackle, the brothers are committed to working together, a lifetime habit. 'We've naturally fallen into this routine where we divide and conquer,' Jonathan says. 'Drew will run with one project. I'll run with another. It's almost seamless now. We don't even have to think about it. We call it twin telepathy.'

HGTV star has laid bare her upset over her divorce settlement with Josh Hall, hinting that she feels 'screwed' by the agreement that the two of them finally reached—nearly a year after they split. Haack, 41, has spent the past few months embroiled in a bitter feud with her 44-year-old estranged husband—having split from Hall shortly after they began filming their new HGTV project, 'The Flip Off.' While speaking on SiriusXM's 'Jeff Lewis Live,' she confessed to host Jeff Lewis that she 'signed something' to be rid of the drama with her ex for good. 'I signed something. There's like a process after the process. It was resolved in mediation after, I think, 12 hours,' she explained. When Lewis asked the home pro if she was happy with how the settlement turned out, she noted that she wasn't interested in divulging all the details. 'I heard a saying once, like, if you both think you're screwed … I don't know how it goes,' she said. 'Look, it's not great, but I guess it's done.' Co-host Shane Douglas clarified the phrase: 'If both parties are equally unhappy after the negotiation, then you got what you want.' Although the details of the settlement haven't been revealed, Haack teased that she will stop by Lewis' show again when they become public record. After the settlement on May 2, a rep for Haack told Us Weekly, 'Christina is pleased to confirm that a settlement has been reached through mediation. She extends her sincere appreciation to her attorney, Laura Wasser, and her team for their professional guidance and support throughout the process.' The HGTV star also praised her legal team on her social media. 'You are all a true class act. I loved watching you in action and how you handle everything and everyone with class and grace. I appreciate you all beyond words. I have learned so much under your guidance,' Haack said on her Instagram Story. The settlement came as a shock to fans and Haack, who previously lamented the ongoing legal proceedings during an appearance on the show 'Jeff Lewis Has Issues.' 'We're not even close [to a settlement]. We're going to be going to trial, I hear. It's going to be fun. Can't wait,' she said. She claimed that Hall asked the court to force her to pay his legal fees, noting that she has not yet been 'ordered' to do so but that she has been supporting him financially. The court hasn't 'ordered me yet, but he's been asking me [for money],' she said. 'I've already had to give a little something, but then he bought a Bentley. I gave him money to live, and he bought a Bentley, but he also doesn't have a job, so …' According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly, Haack asked that neither she nor Hall pay spousal support, adding that she wanted her ex to pay her lawyer fees. On the flip side, Hall requested spousal support and asked Haack to pay his lawyer fees. In response to Haack's interview rant about him, Hall issued a withering response via his spokesperson, accusing Haack of being 'obsessed' with him and alleging that she 'knows nothing' about what is going on in his life. 'It's sad Christina must resort to low blows about her ex Josh to promote her new show,' the statement read, before bizarrely going on to quote a Mariah Carey song. 'She should focus on her new boyfriend and stop talking about Josh. As the great Mariah Carey once sang, 'Why you so obsessed with me?' We wish Christina the best. 'Christina knows nothing about Josh's life, and it's sad she keeps speculating. Her accusations are baseless.' Sharing a screenshot of the statement on her Instagram account, Haack vented her fury: 'I just threw up in my mouth. Quoting a Mariah Carey song is a new low … even for you,' she wrote. Drew Sidora's latest confession about a past relationship has left many surprised, mostly because it has never been mentioned until now. The Real Housewives of Atlanta star recently sat down with Carlos King on his Reality with the King podcast, where she dished on her past relationships with Ty Young and Dennis McKinley — while also dropping a bombshell. We Mourn KING OF THE HILL Actor Jonathan Joss' Death & Share His Husband's Heartbreaking Words
King of the Hill did not resemble the other shows I watched when I was growing up. I snuck it by my mom and always felt mildly like I was doing something I shouldn't be doing when I flipped it onto my TV. And still, something about it drew me in. And, judging by the excitement of our readers about the upcoming King of the Hill revival, many fellow nerds feel this way as well. And so, with a sad heart, I learned that Jonathan Joss, the voice of John Redcorn on King of the Hill and its revival, had been killed in a fatal shooting. But alas, as more details of Jonathan Joss' death came out, the circumstances only became more heartbreaking and more harrowing. After news of his death broke, Jonathan Joss' husband Tristan Kern de Gonzales shared a vulnerable and aching statement, recounting that Joss' shooting, and here we must say, allegedly, was a hate crime. Below, we share Tristan Kern de Gonzales' statement in full, but wanted to add a note of caution for our readers that these words paint very painful images, and those who feel sensitive toward such things, should take proceed carefully. Statement from Tristan Kern de Gonzales Husband of Jonathan Joss My husband Jonathan Joss and I were involved in a shooting while checking the mail at the site of our former home. That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done. Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic. When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw. While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired. Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life. Jonathan is my husband. He gave me more love in our time together than most people ever get. We were newlyweds. We picked Valentines Day. We were in the process of looking for a trailer and planning our future. He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other. I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved. To everyone who supported him, his fans, his friends, know that he valued you deeply. He saw you as family. My focus now is on protecting Jonathan's legacy and honoring the life we built together. If your concern is how someone coped with trauma or how loudly they speak when recounting injustice and being ignored by authorities then you never truly cared about my husband. Jonathan saved my life. I will carry that forward. I will protect what he built. Tristan Kern de Gonzales It's hard to describe the unbelievable sadness that these words evoke. The incredibly cruel act described above is hard to reckon with. And we admire Tristan Kern de Gonzales for his openness in discussing Jonathan Joss' death and the circumstances surrounding it. There is simply no sense in what happened to this loving couple, seemingly just for openly celebrating their love and being proud of their identities. But Kern de Gonzales asked primarily for one thing in the wake of this alleged hate crime: for us to remember Jonathan's legacy and honor his life, to protect what he built. On King of the Hill, Jonathan Joss gave life to a sadly rare Native American character, honoring his own legacy as a man of Comanche and Apache descent. He appeared in TV movies and shows including Walker, Texas Ranger, Friday Night Lights, The League, Ray Donovan, In Plain Sight, and Parks & Recreation. We will also get to hear his voice one more time when the King of the Hill revival graces our screens. Mike Judge, Greg Daniels, and Saladin Patterson said in a statement, 'Jonathan Joss brought King of the Hill's 'John Redcorn' to life for over a dozen seasons, including in the upcoming revival. 'His voice will be missed at King of the Hill, and we extend our deepest condolences to Jonathan's friends and family.'
