An Omro alderman was charged in federal court May 1 with distribution of child pornography.
Jason Reeves, 43, of Omro, is accused of uploading a video depicting child pornography through the messaging application Kik, according to court records.
Reeves resigned from the city council following his arrest. Omro Mayor Steve Jungwirth said Reeves sent a letter of resignation to the Omro City Council, which was approved by the council May 6. Jungwirth declined to comment further.
As of May 7, the City of Omro's website does not include Reeve's information and lists one council position as vacant.
Reeves was held in Brown County Jail until May 7, when he was released on home detention, records indicate.
If convicted, Reeves faces a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison.
The following information is from a criminal complaint:
In December 2024, an analyst from the Wisconsin Department of Justice Internet Crimes Against Children taskforce contacted the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office regarding a CyberTip received by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children from the messaging application Kik. Kik reported that a video of child pornography had been uploaded and shared in a private message between two users on October 16, 2024.
The investigation tied the IP address that uploaded the video to Reeves, at a home on the 100 block of East Ontario Street in Omro.
On May 1, investigators from the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office and an FBI agent executed a search warrant at the home. When they made contact with Reeves, investigators informed him they were serving a search warrant for child pornography. An investigator asked Reeves if he knew some information about that, and Reeves replied "probably."
Reeves was the only family member home at the time. He said he did not want to answer questiosn until he spoke with an attorney.
During their search of the home, investigators found a computer that had a folder on the desktop which drew their attention. They also located a notebook containing several usernames and passwords, including for the same email address associated with the Kik Cybertip.
Investigators took the computer, multiple cell phones, tablets, laptops, computer towers, thumb drives and SD cards to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office for extraction.

L.I. teacher accused of posing as teen to solicit nude photos of underage girls

A former Long Island high school teacher who allegedly posed as a teen to solicit explicit images from underage girls has been indicted for promoting a sexual performance by a child and related charges, officials said Thursday. Ryan McCaffery, a former social studies teacher at Riverhead High School, was arrested May 12 by New York State Police following a months-long investigation. The 37-year-old Ridge resident is accused of using a fake Snapchat name to communicate with 'female children,' according to the Suffolk County district attorney. A multi-agency investigation began in Suffolk County last fall when detectives received a tip about an individual who'd allegedly shared child sexual abuse material on the messaging app Kik. Earlier this year, police executed a search warrant at McCaffery's home and recovered several electronic devices. A forensic analysis of those devices revealed the defendant had allegedly been communicating with 'multiple underage girls' while posing as a teenager on Snapchat. According to prosecutors, he sent images of his exposed genitals to the victims and requested nude photos in return. Authorities said McCaffery had also been investigated in Bergen County, N.J., after parents reported their daughters had experienced similar things on Snapchat. An investigation determined McCaffery had 'requested nude photos and engaged in sexual acts while video chatting' with victims under the age of 13. He was taken into custody in New Jersey on Feb. 14 and charged with sexual assault, child endangerment and lewdness. The case, which is not related to McCaffery's case in Suffolk County, is still pending. McCaffery was arraigned on Wednesday for the charges in New York, including multiple counts of attempted use of a child in a sexual performance and disseminating indecent material to minors. His bail was set at $100,000 cash, $400,000 bond, or a $1 million partially secured bond. He's due back in court July 17.

Pulaski County man arrested in 2008 child sexual abuse case

PULASKI COUNTY, Mo. — A man from Crocker, Missouri, was arrested after being accused of sexually abusing a child sometime between 2008 and 2009 when he was in kindergarten. The suspect, Daniel Gaines, was charged with first-degree statutory sodomy with a child who was less than 14 years old. His bond is set at $250,000, cash or surety only. According to online court documents, in April 2013, charges were initially filed against Gaines in an investigation into the alleged child abuse, but the prosecutor dismissed the case around January 2015 after the venue was changed to Phelps County. In November 2024, Gaines was being investigated for allegedly uploading and distributing child pornography on the messaging app KIK in June. This investigation revealed conversations Gaines had with another user where he discussed sexually assaulting a child. One message read, 'At 18, I was babysitting for some people who had two 2 yo sons from prior relationships…they decided they weren't going to pay me the way they promised…so I took my payment out on the 2 yo boys.' Camden County area damage left behind after Tuesday night storms The detective contacted Gaines at his residence on June 2, 2025. Gaines told the detective that the content in his KIK conversations was all fantasy and not based on truth. He claimed he only collected child pornography and took part in perverse conversations to report users on Telegram and KIK. However, court documents state that Gaines did not provide an example of him reporting said content. The detective then contacted the victim, who detailed the sexual abuse. The victim said that sometime in 2008 or 2009, when he was five years old, Gaines sexually assaulted him on two separate occasions at a mobile home in Crocker. The victim claimed he felt the system failed him since the initial case was dropped by the prosecuting attorney without just cause, court records state, and he wants Gaines to be held accountable. The probable cause statement notes that Gaines is currently homeless and has been accused of sexually assaulting family members. Gaines' next court appearance is a counsel status hearing scheduled for June 11. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
