Why so many people tell Dr. John Delony (and his millions of listeners) their deep, dark secrets

This podcaster's name is Dr. John Delony, and he hosts a show on conservative financial guru Dave Ramsey's network, Ramsey Solutions. It's where he talks about mental health and gives advice to listeners who call in with problems that include repairing a marriage after infidelity, reconciling two sisters' opposing stances on abortion –– and sometimes wilder topics, such as if a caller should leave their family for their best friend's wife.
Many times, callers begin their stories with, 'I've never told anyone this before.'
With 1.2 million subscribers on YouTube, 1.5 million followers on Instagram and three books, Delony's approach to talking about vulnerable things appears to be resonating with many people.
His callers represent a wide variety of people –– men, women, conservative Christians, truck drivers, veterans, police officers and farmers –– many of whom often heavily feel the stigma of struggling with mental health, being vulnerable and asking for help.
Part of why he works is that Delony doesn't fit the mental health counselor stereotype of someone in soft tones asking 'how does that make you feel,' which is just a stereotype, said David Kessler, a death and grieving expert, author and one-time guest on Delony's show.
Delony has a balance of presenting like the credentialed mental health professional he is and the good buddy who just wants to hear you out and offer a little guidance, Kessler added, which is what a lot of people are looking for.
Health officials have said the United States is facing a mental health crisis, and in 2023, nearly 1 in 4 adults around the world reported feeling fairly or very lonely.
Podcasts are not a replacement for therapy with a trained professional, and listeners should be aware that content around mental health can often be oversimplified, said Dr. Frank Sileo, a psychologist based in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
But platforms like Delony's can provide benefit, he added.
'Listening to a podcast may be the first important step of a person's mental health journey,' Sileo added. 'Podcasts that focus on mental health issues can provide a wonderful forum for people to learn about all things mental health.'
Delony's combination of a traditionally masculine appearance and open approach — along with his doctorate in counselor education and supervision –– might be one step toward connecting people in need with the tools and resources for better well-being.
In a backstage Q&A at Atlanta's Fox Theater for Delony and Ramsey's 'Money and Relationships' tour, the two men gave a teasing smile to an audience member who introduced herself as Rachel from California before asking a question.
'Oh yes, we know you, Rachel,' they said in mock annoyance, like old friends.
Rachel Guerrero traveled from California for 10 shows this tour, and she is going to the next shows in Fort Worth, Texas; Kansas City, Missouri; and Phoenix, she said.
'Being a single mom, it's not easy,' Guerrero told CNN. 'When I listen to his show and what he talks about, it's a caller that's something totally different, but it applies to me.'
How can she afford all those trips, you ask? She credits Dave Ramsey's advice with her financial success.
Her feeling was common among audience members. They said they could trust Delony because he was connected to Ramsey and his Christian-based teaching. But they also say he knows what he was talking about because he had been through it himself, and that he just says it like it is.
Accruing this following wasn't the goal, Delony said. In fact, he had no social media accounts when he made the switch from higher education to podcasting.
Before joining Ramsey's company in 2020, he was giving a talk to parents of incoming students as Belmont University's dean of students about what they were about to face emotionally. A Ramsey Solutions executive was in the audience, and she later told Delony that she turned to her husband in the middle of the talk and said, 'I'm hiring that guy.'
Becoming a public mental health personality wasn't appealing –– it was scary, actually –– but surrounded by a culture filled with yelling and turmoil, Delony said he felt motivated to take the job for his kids.
'This is the scariest thing I can do, but I want to be able to look at my kids and say, 'I tried to love people well, to give a picture of what loving people well in the public sphere looks like in the world that everyone's yelling at each other,'' he said.
Meeting people where they are and sitting with them when they are hurting is both something fans like about Delony and something he said he prioritizes in his show.
Delony works for Ramsey Solutions, hosting his own podcast and cohosting 'The Ramsey Show' radio program. Ramsey is a well-known evangelical Christian who has described himself as conservative and spoke in a podcast episode last year about voting for Donald Trump for president.
But Delony, who has also talked about his identity as a Christian, has been less direct about where he stands politically.
'I guess the best way you could sum me up is the first time I went deer hunting, I had to put a gigantic buck in the back of my Prius,' he said. 'I kind of fall all over the place, and I think I've been kind of hard to nail down politically.'
'I just love everybody, and everybody's welcome at my house,' Delony added. 'It's always been that way.'
Prioritizing empathy for people who are hurting over where you stand on a particular issue is important, he said. It's easy to demonize people with a political different stance in theory, but it is a lot harder to do that and show up for your friend or loved one when they are impacted by an issue you feel so against, Delony said.
And as much as Delony might have intended his show to be a place to nerd out over psychology and data, he said he has found that what most people need is someone to sit with them. No matter what side they stand on or what mess they have gotten into, he wants to be the person others know will sit with them over a tray of nachos and just talk it out, he added.
'Even if they don't like me, they're like, 'I know that guy will share a drink with me, and he'll tell me the truth,'' Delony said.
Humans are built to live in a tribe, and when you don't have strong connections in your community, you can default to finding belonging in a political party, he said.
'I work really hard to have other tribes so that I'm not reliant on somebody telling me who to hate, who to not like,' he said. 'I've got communities that let my heart rest so then I can critically think, and I can examine, and I can sit around and share a table with people who I think have wacky opinions.
'But I love them, and they're hilarious, and they make me laugh, or they frustrate me, but them not being in my tribe isn't the goal of that communication.'
Connecting with people is something that has roots in Delony's childhood in Texas.
His father was a homicide detective in Houston, and someone who people in their church community would often go to for guidance, he said. Delony's dad would get phone calls at all hours of the night. He would take those calls inside his closet –– which shared a wall with young Delony's bedroom.
Delony said he would fall asleep listening in on stories of people facing mental health issues or jail time, realizing that some of the people he went to church with every week were struggling with things he never would have suspected.
'(Mental health has) just kind of been my whole life, from being a little kid all the way till now,' he said.
In college, Delony majored in psychology and humanities, got a master's degree in higher education administration and then earned two doctorates, one in counselor education and supervision and another in higher education administration.
Much of his career has been in higher education, where he oversaw student services like residence life and counseling support services. His work in higher education also included crisis response.
But his connection with mental health also comes from his experience with his own, he said.
In his book, 'Own Your Past, Change Your Future: A Not-So-Complicated Approach to Relationships, Mental Health & Wellness,' Delony explains a moment his anxiety reached a boiling point.
With a new baby, a country recovering from the 2008 financial crisis and a job helping college students in some of their most difficult moments, Delony writes that he became convinced that the foundation of his new house was crumbling. His wife didn't see it, nor did his friends –– even the professionals he called to come check it out said he didn't have a problem.
But still, Delony couldn't let go of the fear that a storm would crack the foundation and destroy his young family's home, he wrote. So, one night he found himself in the middle of the night crawling through the mud and rain with a flashlight, certain he would find evidence of the structural problem no one but him was worried about.
There was nothing. His home was fine, but Delony realized he was not, and he said that was one of the big moments that showed him he needed to address his anxiety.
Another story he often shares with listeners is the moment when he and his wife sat across the table from one another after years together, several miscarriages and two children, and they agreed they either needed to start their marriage over or stop being married.
They were faced with a choice — end a marriage or learn some new tools for managing their relationship and building their connection, he said.
Delony and his wife, Sheila, did learn new relationship skills and are still together after more than 20 years of marriage. That meant him getting into therapy, and both of them learning how to be explicit about what they each needed and expected from one another, he said.
But many people find themselves sitting at their own tables across from their partners or looking in the mirror and finding that they aren't getting enough connection with their friends and family.
It makes sense, Delony said. Much of the interaction and community building you would get in the past has now been outsourced: People call a rideshare service instead of asking for a ride home from the airport and you use a delivery app for the cup of sugar you would have otherwise borrowed from a neighbor, he said.
The change has been particularly hard on men, who often have been socialized against vulnerability and toward only connecting with others in very specific ways.
'I'll just use the old adage that women build community kneecap to kneecap, and men build it shoulder to shoulder,' he said.
For decades, many men in Western cultures have been taught that vulnerability –– saying here is what I need or here is what I am struggling with –– was dangerous; so relationships for many men were built through shared activity, Delony said.
Opening up for more connection in a world where many of those activities have been replaced by apps and screens might take intentional effort, he added.
Delony had a group of friends that maintained a tradition: Once a month, they chose one friend, gathered at his house and tackled his to-do list together.
'In one day, they would clean the carpets, change the front bumper, level the yard, paint the fence, whatever you needed done,' he said. 'Everybody ate pizza. … Everybody was working shoulder to shoulder on a project that when you got done, you came out your front yard and everybody high-fived, because this house and this family is different, because we all showed up.'
Now, after moving from Texas to Tennessee, he keeps putting himself out there for opportunities to get closer.
'I have some rules that when I buy a concert ticket, I have to buy two, or I'll buy four, and I just invite people,' he said. 'I have these little internal rules that I know at the end of a night I'm going to be better, or the night will have been better because I went with a buddy.'
And as people seem to get lonelier and more polarized, Delony said he hopes people like him will keep modeling how to be vulnerable, how to build new relationship skills when you have to and how to sit with all kinds of hurting people.

Most photos from my teen years are filtered or edited in some way, and as I scroll through them, it's been really disconcerting to see how clear my skin was, how small my nose was, how big my eyes were — but were they? Right now, I'm 26, nearly 27 (which my 18-year-old sister tells me is basically 30). My skin isn't as resilient as it used to be, and I'm feeling the pressure to use retinol to banish any fine lines (so far, I'm successfully resisting — but only just). I've gone up two, sometimes three dress sizes in recent years, my eyelashes are not what they used to be and while I have no evidence of it, I'm convinced my lips have gotten smaller. 'Is it a lack of collagen production as I age?', the skincare-pilled part of me asks. The piece of me that knows this is a damaging line of thought for someone in their mid-twenties throws her phone into the bin. I know that certain brands want me to feel insecure, that this dread and anxiety in my chest powers a multi-billion dollar beauty industry that needs me to run into its arms and ask it to fix me. I know this in my head, yet I can't stop my hands from picking up my phone and scrolling through my Instagram photos from my high school and uni days. Despite my efforts, I end up comparing myself to when my skin was smooth and my lips were fuller and I didn't have the same lines around my eyes. I think back to the days when I was pretty, goddamn it. Why have I changed so much? Here's the thing, though: that photo with me throwing up peace signs? I wasn't wearing any makeup that day. I added eyeshadow, lipstick and long lashes via the Airbrush app. And don't forget the features where I could smooth my skin and enlarge my eyes. In the Krispy Kreme photo, I made my eyes bigger, my nose smaller, my face slimmer and edited out my eyebags and any of what I considered "skin imperfections". In fact, almost every photo I posted of myself between the years of 2016 and 2020 are heavily edited in some way. As I go through ' second puberty ' and feel my body and face mature to that of a woman in her late twenties, the temptation to compare myself to the 'old me' is becoming harder to resist. This self-flagellation is a feeling I'm sure many women are familiar with, but the dysphoria is particularly crippling because every photograph of myself from this era is a lie. They are genuinely not a reflection of what I look like. These representations of me are not real, and the result is having unrealistic standards of my own face caused by… my own face? And so, in some ways, I have become my own tormenter. ' The result is having unrealistic standards of my own face caused by… my own face? ' When I was in school, 'unrealistic beauty standards' were mostly associated with magazines and digital publications airbrushing their models — crucially, it was a standard others perpetuated, so it really didn't occur to me that my own use of filters would cause me psychic damage in the future. Now, post- TikTok and in a world where filters are ubiquitous and increasingly hard to spot, we need to be talking about the long term effects of using them — namely, that after a while, you might actually forget what you used to look like. And if you can't remember what's 'normal' for your face, accepting it in its current, older form is an uphill battle, made all the harder by this new age of skincare where 10-year-olds are making Drunk Elephant skincare smoothies and cosmetic procedures are no longer a luxury associated with celebrities, but an accessible (and encouraged) way for women of all backgrounds to 'maintain their youth'. ' They've been brainwashed not just by the beauty industry, but by the normalisation of editing your photos, which we were the first generation to do. ' In fact, warped perceptions of aging are already rife online — just look up any video of a woman aged 27 to 30 years old who isn't wearing makeup. Or, if you want to be particularly upset, look at the comments on this specific video from last year. The comments are tragic, and to me, they're evidence that we've failed our little sisters who have no idea what 'normal' aging looks like because they've been brainwashed not just by the beauty industry, but by the normalisation of editing your photos, which we were the first generation to do.

TN trans care ban: AG said defending case to SCOTUS, expected to rule soon, was God's will
DALLAS — Potentially days before the U.S. Supreme Court rules in a landmark case on a ban on transgender youth receiving certain medical care, Tennessee's attorney general told a room of Southern Baptists he believes it was God's providence that he argued before the land's highest court. "I'm in the middle of things that are so much bigger than I have any business being in the middle of. But I'm there for a reason," Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti said during a June 10 panel discussion at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. 'So, I just try to remember it's not about me and that God puts his people where he needs them, where he wants them." Skrmetti's office is defending Tennessee's ban on gender transition treatments for transgender minors, which a Nashville family with a transgender teenager is challenging. The Supreme Court may decide on the case as early as June 12, and a majority of justices have signaled a friendly disposition toward upholding Tennessee's law that took effect in June 2023. The June 10 event was organized by the Nashville-based SBC's public policy arm, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. Skrmetti and another panelist, Alliance Defending Freedom senior vice president Ryan Bangert, said the case is about science and the degree to which courts can decide public policy. But Skrmetti and Bangert, whose law firm is helping represent Tennessee in U.S. v. Skrmetti, acknowledged faith is another key component of this story and will potentially be a resounding victory for conservative Christians. More: Meet the Tennessee family behind the US Supreme Court's major transgender health care case 'I would be ready to have good conversations with your congregants, good conversations with your fellow church members about what this case means not just from a legal perspective. But from a broader cultural perspective,' Bangert said at the June 10 panel. 'I would be ready to have that conversation: 'God willing, the law has been upheld. What do we do know?'' Alliance Defending Freedom has been a decisive force in several recent U.S. Supreme Court cases that have reversed precedent in favor of conservative Christian ideals. Examples include Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization that overturned Roe v. Wade, Kennedy v. Bremerton dealing with public prayer on a high school sports field, and 303 Creative v. Elenis about a Christian web designer's refusal to work with same-sex couples. The Southern Baptist Convention is the nation's largest Protestant denomination. The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission stated its opposition to transition treatment for transgender people in resolutions at past SBC annual meetings and has been a vocal proponent of bans in Tennessee and other states. Bangert said at the June 10 panel there are 26 states with bans like Tennessee's and the decision in U.S. v. Skrmetti could affect those other laws. The ERLC filed an amicus brief in U.S. v. Skrmetti, for which the SBC-affiliated agency hired a Southern Baptist lawyer to carefully and forcefully assert the Southern Baptists' position on the issue. Skrmetti praised the ERLC's amicus brief during the June 10 panel, saying it provided a theological rationale for Tennessee's law. Skrmetti's office cannot make that theological argument in its defense before the Supreme Court because an establishment clause requires the state to approach the case from a religiously neutral perspective. Skrmetti, who attends a Church of Christ congregation in Nashville, said at the June 10 panel in his capacity at Tennessee's attorney general that his religion is not a factor in how he approaches the case. But personally, he told the crowd of Southern Baptists in Dallas that the outcome will be meaningful as a person of faith. 'Pray for my team that all of us that if we win, win gracefully in a way that reinforces both shining God's light into the world,' Skrmetti said. TikTok Beauty Routines May Cause Skin Allergies and Irritation, Study Finds
New research shows the potential health harms of TikTok skin care videos touting 'lighter, brighter skin' marketed toward young girls ages 7 to 18. Many products analyzed contain harsh active ingredients, which may lead to skin irritation and chronic skin allergies. The findings show young content creators using an average of six skin care products costing $168 to $500 or more per regimen, with just 26% of regimens involving sunscreen use. Experts warn that unrealistic beauty standards perpetuated by social media send harmful messages to young girls. The 'Get Ready With Me' (#GRWM) trend on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram is wildly popular among pre-teen and adolescent girls. In these videos, young content creators demonstrate their skin care and makeup routines for captive audiences to absorb tips and tricks like a sponge. As with many social media trends perpetuated by algorithms catering to the interests of young, vulnerable minds, some #GRWM hacks may do more harm than good. In a first-of-its-kind study, Northwestern Medicine researchers examined the potential risks associated with skin care routines shared on TikTok by teenage girls. To do this, researchers created two undercover TikTok profiles, each claiming to be 13 years old. After analyzing 100 unique videos generated in their 'For You' tab based on their reported interests, the researchers determined that young girls ages 7 to 18 use an average of six different skin care products on their faces. Some girls, they found, use more than a dozen products in their routines. According to the researchers, the skin care products included in the analysis were marketed toward younger audiences. The products are also expensive, averaging around $168 per monthly regimen and as high as $500 or more. Using the Pediatric Baseline Series patch test, the researchers also found that the most-viewed videos had an average of 11 active ingredients known to raise the risk of skin allergy and irritation. The videos also emphasized 'lighter and brighter skin,' and only 26% mentioned sunscreen use. TikTok's platform is intended for users ages 13 and older, but the study suggests some content creators may have been as young as 7. The researchers told Healthline that some influencers disclosed their age in their videos. For those who didn't, ages were determined based on content shared in the video that may pertain to their age, such as a birthday or another event (i.e., 'GRWM for the first day of 6th grade!') and any relevant hashtag (#highschool or #freshman). The researchers did not examine skin care routines on other social media platforms, which warrants further study. The authors also acknowledge the limited sample size, and the mental health implications were not evaluated, only inferred. 'This type of content is common across all media, and the authors admit they did not assess its impact on teen well-being. However, they did find actual benefits to teen self-expression, parent-teen bonding, and building a supportive community on TikTok,' a TikTok spokesperson told Healthline by email. Still, experts say the findings, published on June 9 in the journal Pediatrics, are concerning and outweigh any positive benefits. 'As a dermatologist and a mom of four, I was concerned about the kinds of messages that young teens are getting about skin and skin care on social media,' said corresponding author Molly Hales, MD, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow and board certified dermatologist in the department of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. 'The only product I regularly recommend for kids without specific skin problems is sunscreen. Worse, it seemed like teens were starting to think that they needed to use tons of products for their skin to be healthy,' Hales told Healthline. Skin care content linked to allergies, sensitivities The researchers collected TikTok skin care videos between April 1 and May 15, 2024. They found that the high risk of skin irritation and allergy was linked to content creators using multiple active ingredients simultaneously. Active ingredients like hydroxy acids may be especially harmful to young, developing skin and may cause allergic contact dermatitis, a reaction which could lead to long-term skin sensitivities. ' The skin care products and regimens being used in the videos have dermatologic risks (irritation, allergy, and sun sensitivity), and set an unrealistic standard of beauty that is promoted as 'health,'' Hales said. Daniel Ganjian, MD, FAAP, board certified pediatrician at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, cited several reasons for young people to avoid using products with certain active ingredients (Ganjian wasn't involved in the study): Delicate skin barrier: Young skin is more delicate and has a less developed barrier compared to adult skin, making it more susceptible to irritation, dryness, and allergic reactions. Harsh ingredients can disrupt this barrier, leading to increased sensitivity. Higher risk of sensitization: Repeated exposure to irritating ingredients at a young age can lead to sensitization. This means the immune system becomes 'trained' to react to these substances, leading to chronic skin allergies (allergic contact dermatitis) that can persist into adulthood. Long-term skin issues: Early exposure to harsh chemicals can lead to long-term skin problems beyond immediate allergies, such as chronic inflammation, dryness, and a compromised skin barrier, making skin more prone to other issues like acne or eczema. Signs of allergic reaction Ganjian told Healthline that chronic skin allergies caused by skin care products may range in severity, but in some cases, can be serious. Common symptoms of a reaction may include: Itching: Often intense and persistent. Redness (Erythema): The affected skin becomes noticeably red. Rash: Can appear as flat, raised, bumpy, or scaly patches. Swelling: Especially common on the face, lips, and eyelids. Dry, flaky, or scaly skin: The skin may become dry, cracked, or peel. Hives: Raised, itchy, red welts. Blisters: Small, fluid-filled bumps that may break open and ooze. Burning or stinging sensation: Discomfort in the affected area. Thickened skin (lichenification): In chronic cases, repeated scratching can lead to thickened, leathery skin. 'In severe cases, allergic reactions can impact a person's quality of life significantly, leading to discomfort, sleep disturbances, and self-consciousness,' Ganjian said. 'While rare for topical products, extremely severe reactions like anaphylaxis (a life threatening whole-body allergic reaction) are possible with some allergens, though this is more commonly associated with food or insect stings.' Beauty content emphasizes 'lighter, brighter skin' Many of the TikTok videos analyzed by the researchers emphasized 'lighter, brighter skin' as a picture of health. In one video, an influencer applied 10 products to her face in just six minutes to achieve this effect. 'As she's applying the products, she begins to express discomfort and burning, and in the final few minutes, she develops a visible skin reaction,' said senior author Tara Lagu, MD, MPH, adjunct lecturer of medicine and medical social sciences at Feinberg and a former Northwestern Medicine hospitalist, in a news release. 'We saw that there was preferential, encoded racial language in some cases that really emphasized lighter, brighter skin. I think there also were real associations between use of these regimens and consumerism,' Lagu continued. Lagu and Hales concluded that the content they examined offered little to no benefit for the young demographics they're targeting, and that the potential harms extend beyond the risk of skin damage. 'It's problematic to show girls devoting this much time and attention to their skin,' Hales said in a news release. 'We're setting a very high standard for these girls.' Mental health harms of high beauty standards The researchers' estimates for the high monthly costs of skin care regimens touted by young content creators are likely out of reach for the average young person. It's unknown how the young influencers paid for the products. 'We were disturbed at the high cost of some of the most common products used in the videos, most of which offer little to no benefit to the young teens and pre-teens who were shown using them,' Hales said. 'It makes me wonder about the many girls whose families can't afford to spend $68 on a moisturizer, and whether they think that their skin is somehow less healthy as a result.' What's more, skin care content promoting unrealistic beauty standards may cause mental health harm during adolescence, when young people are developing their sense of self. 'Constant external validation sought through appearance can hinder the development of a healthy, authentic identity based on internal qualities and values,' Ganjian noted. These impacts may include: body image dissatisfaction and low self-esteem anxiety and depression eating disorders and unhealthy behaviors social isolation perfectionism and obsessive tendencies distorted perception of reality impact on identity development 'True beauty encompasses overall health, confidence, and internal qualities,' Ganjian continued. 'Chasing unrealistic beauty ideals perpetuated online can be detrimental to mental well-being. Be highly skeptical of skin care content on social media platforms like TikTok. Understand that much of it is marketing-driven, often promotes unrealistic beauty standards, and may feature digitally altered images,' he said. Hales echoed this sentiment. 'I'm concerned about problematic and unrealistic beauty standards being passed off as skin 'health' or 'care,' and potentially exposing young people to skin irritation, allergy, and sun sensitivity,' Hales said.
