PM with US ties
Ukraine's new prime minister will be Yulia Svyrydenko, an economy minister known for finalising a natural resources deal with the United States that nearly derailed ties between the countries.
"She was the key and the only person leading these negotiations. She managed to prevent them from unravelling," said Tymofiy Mylovanov, a former economy minister who worked with Svyrydenko.
She won the respect of US partners including senior US political leadership, analysts have said.
"Trump and his administration are now a priority for Ukraine. Svyrydenko has proven herself there and will continue to do so," said political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko.
Svyrydenko, 39, has earned the trust of Ukraine's business community for her handling of the country's wartime economy, President of the American Chamber of Commerce Andy Hunder said.
"We've had a transparent, trust-based and collaborative relationship," Hunder said.
New US ambassador
Zelensky has indicated that Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, who had taken part in negotiations with Russia, will be the next US ambassador.
"Ukraine needs more positive dynamics in relations with the United States and at the same time new steps in managing the defence sector of our state," Zelensky told Umerov in a meeting last week.
Trump has criticised the last administration's decision to send billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, but has authorised NATO members to make arms purchases on Kyiv's behalf.
Umerov's appointment "means only one thing. The key issue in bilateral relations between the US and Ukraine right now is weapons", Fesenko said.
"Arms supplies are the number one issue. The second issue is negotiations to end the war. Umerov has been involved in both," he added.
Outgoing prime minister, an unassuming technocrat, Denys Shmygal, will take over the defence ministry brief, Zelensky has said.
More control?
Zelensky's rivals have long accused him of seeking to consolidate power and some critical media say Svyrydenko's appointment marked the latest step in this trend.
She is seen as loyal to Andriy Yermak, the powerful head of the Zelensky's office.
Ukrainska Pravda, a respected independent media outlet, published a report describing the moves as "the strengthening of the head of the presidential office -- although it's hard to see how that's possible."
"It's obvious that the Presidential office's influence will increase," opposition lawmaker Mykola Kniazhytskyi told AFP.
"The authorities are pursuing further centralisation and refusing any dialogue," he added.
What now?
Svyrydenko has set her priorities as prime minister as strengthening the economy, scaling up arms production, and expanding support programs.
Fesenko said Shmygal's appointment as defence minister would likely see him "bring some order" to the ministry, which has previously been plagued by corruption scandals.
Lawmakers voted on Wednesday to officially dismiss the government and were set to approve new ministers the following day.

Volvo Cars swings into loss on electric vehicles, tariffs
The net loss of 8.1 billion kronor ($830 million) was due to a 11.4-billion-kronor writedown in the value of its EX90 electric SUV and ES90 electric sedan due to production delays, higher development costs than planned and now US tariffs making sales there unprofitable. "Demand remains under pressure from the macroeconomic environment, tariff-related uncertainties and tougher competition," chief executive Hakan Samuelsson said in the quarterly earnings report. The Sweden-based manufacturer owned by China's Geely also took a 1.4-billion-kronor restructuring charge, having announced 3,000 job cuts in May. The group had booked a net profit of 5.7 billion kronor in the same quarter last year. Excluding exceptional items, it estimated its quarterly operating profit at 2.9 billion kronor, down from 8.0 billion last year. Retail sales of cars dropped by 12 percent by volume, while revenue fell by eight percent to 93.5 billion kronor due to lower volumes and the higher value of the Swedish kronor. That beat the analyst consensus of 88.2 billion kronor compiled by Bloomberg. Shares in Volvo Cars shot more than seven percent higher as trading got underway on the Stockholm stock exchange. Volvo Cars announced in April an 18-billion-kronor cost-cutting plan, part of efforts to navigate a car market buffeted by US tariffs and a costly switch to electric vehicles. It said then it would adapt to the increasing regionalisation in trade. And on Wednesday it announced it would begin building its XC60 SUV in the United States next year to avoid the 25-percent US tariffs applied to its vehicles. The company said it would no longer provide financial guidance for 2025 and 2026 due to "external developments and increased uncertainties".

‘We are keen on accountability': Syria's al-Sharaa vows justice after deadly Druze clashes
Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa vowed Thursday that those behind violence against the Druze minority would be held accountable after deadly clashes in their southern heartland, saying security responsibility would be returned to local authorities. "We are keen on holding accountable those who transgressed and abused our Druze people, as they are under the protection and responsibility of the state," Sharaa said in a televised address. The Syrian government announced on Wednesday a new ceasefire in Sweida and a halt to military operations there after days of violence that killed more than 350 people, according to a war monitor. It also said the army had begun withdrawing from the Druze-majority city. Security forces had been deployed there a day earlier with the stated aim of overseeing a previous truce, following days of deadly clashes between Druze fighters and local Bedouin tribes. But witnesses said the government forces had joined the Bedouin in attacking Druze fighters and civilians. Sharaa said that "responsibility" for security in Sweida would be handed to religious elders and some local factions "based on the supreme national interest". Before the government intervention, Druze areas were mainly controlled by fighters from the minority. Addressing the Druze, Sharaa said the community was "a fundamental part of the fabric of this nation... protecting your rights and freedom is one of our priorities". Syria's Islamist authorities, who toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, have had strained relations with Syria's religious and ethnic minorities, and have been accused of not doing enough to protect them. 'Mediation' March saw massacres of more than 1,700 mostly Alawite civilians in their coastal heartland, with government affiliated groups blamed for most of the killings. Government forces also battled Druze fighters in Sweida province and near Damascus in April and May, leaving more than 100 people dead.
