Minecraft Live March 2025: Minecraft Gets an Overhaul with Vibrant Visuals & We Went Hands-On

Yahoo22-03-2025
At today's Minecraft Live, Mojang Studios announced that Minecraft will be getting a major graphics mode update called Vibrant Visuals.
Have you ever wondered what it would look like to see a Minecraft world in high resolution? Mojang Studios looked at the 15-year-old game and thought that it could use an update, but they were faced with an important question: How do you upgrade Minecraft without losing what makes it 'Minecrafty.' I was able to visit Mojang in Stockholm, Sweden, to go hands-on with the new Minecraft flying mount and Vibrant Visuals, and I have to say, Vibrant Visuals changes the landscape of Minecraft without the need for mods or shaders.
First thing first, this isn't a mandatory graphic upgrade for Minecraft players. Vibrant Visuals will eventually be made available for all platforms with a simple toggle in your game's menu. It was important to the team at Mojang Studios to make Minecraft and the new Vibrant Visuals mode available to as many people as possible without alienating their current player base. The new mode will be completely optional, and you can turn it off at any time.
I was able to speak to the team at Mojang Studios, who worked on Vibrant Visuals directly. Vibrant Visuals Producer Dejan Dimic described the update for players who haven't seen it yet, 'It's a visual refresh for the core Minecraft game. So, it is our first step in our vision of what a modern look and feel of the game could look like. We've tried to balance modern rendering technologies with staying true to Minecraft and the art style. So, creating this cool balance while also trying to enable this to as many, many players as possible.'
What is exciting, especially for a console player like myself, is that this will bring a brand-new visual style to the Bedrock Edition. That means those who don't have access to shaders or mods will be able to do this for the first time. Senior Product Manager on Vibrant Visuals Maddie Psenka noted that this is something players really seem to want,
'We want to get it out to as many players as possible. Right now, especially on consoles, it's hard to mod and update your game. A lot of players like to play with visual mods, and we see it in the community a lot, so doing this will allow us to bring it easily to those players. It'll be a toggle in the menu so players will be able to access Vibrant Visuals.'
She went on to explain how easy it will be to use, too, 'This is a built-in new graphics mode, so it'll include a bunch of new textures that work with this new mode to highlight a lot of the interesting physical properties of blocks and items and entities in the game. So there's no need to sideload anything or download anything. It'll just be on the simple toggle.'
One thing that the Vibrant Visuals team was adamant about was that Minecraft's new mode was available to as many people as possible. Psenka ensured us that it would be across multiple platforms, thanks to being available on Minecraft's Bedrock edition, 'We want it to be available to as many devices as possible. We don't have a full spec for devices yet, but we are targeting mobile devices, consoles and PC, of course, so we want to make it as available to as many players as possible.'
During my playthrough, I was able to check out Vibrant Visuals on a couple of different maps at varying times of day. The team had set up a simple one-button toggle so I could turn Minecraft's Vibrant Visuals on and off, really amplifying the subtle yet somehow significant graphic differences. It's odd how little, yet how much, Vibrant Visuals changes things. Occasionally, I would leave it on or off and be unsure what mode I was in, only to press the toggle and see just how obvious it was.
During sunrise, I was able to spot my pixelated shadow cast over the ladder I was climbing. Mobs cast shadows now, too, and it wasn't anything I had ever noticed was missing until I saw it turned off. Reflections on the water are absolutely beautiful, but still keep that pixelated style Minecraft is known for. Underwater is also more realistic. Now, water feels murky and hard to spot creatures clearly, where as before, it was like it wasn't there at all.
Of course, Vibrant Visuals wouldn't be going live without testing, and Art Director Jasper Boerstra gave us some insight on what players have said so far, and it sort of reiterates what I saw, too, 'I felt like we got a lot of validation of our goals. They were like, 'Oh, it's not too overpowering,' 'Oh, it still looks so much like Minecraft.' You know, all of these kind of things that we set out to do. They were reacting that way. They were like, 'Wow, this just looks like Minecraft, but enhanced,' that stuff. So, I'm very, very confident that players will like this.'
Walking away from my visit to Sweden, I couldn't help but just feel good about what Mojang Studios is creating. This team has been working on Vibrant Visuals for ages, but when asked what they thought the ratio would be for users who toggle it on versus 'Vanilla Minecraft' or if it would be a letdown if everyone didn't swap over, the consensus was the same. 'We want people to experience Minecraft the way they want to,' said Executive Producer Ingela Garneji.
I had one last question for the Minecraft Vibrant Visuals team, 'What is your favourite part of Vibrant Visuals?' I thought I knew the answer because, for me, it is the absolutely stunning reflections on the water. However, the team fought for who would get to say Pixelated Shadows. 'I have to explain why I say Pixelated Shadows, but it's because it's so Minecraft. I mean, shadows in Minecraft, of course they're pixelated!' said Garneji.
Vibrant Visuals is really something you have to toggle on in Minecraft to truly understand what it is. High-rez Minecraft is the best way I can't describe it, but it still holds onto its boxy, pixelated style. Though I don't have an exact date yet, Minecraft's Vibrant Visuals mode will first release on the Bedrock Edition, with plans to bring it to the Java Edition in the future. With the A Minecraft Movie releasing soon, we are sure to talk more about Minecraft soon!

Freaky 'Wednesday' 🕷️ (and 'Friday'!)

It's quite the time for those pop-culture obsessives who also are big days-of-the-week nerds. Netflix's hugely popular "Wednesday" has returned for a second season, with more gothic adventures and death glares from Jenna Ortega's reluctant teen heroine Wednesday Addams. Then there's more for the youngsters with "Freakier Friday," the highly anticipated sequel featuring more body-swapping shenanigans with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. And while adding to your must-see list, prepare your funny bone for the buddy comedy of "SNL" alums Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson in "The Pickup." Now on to the good stuff: See Jenna Ortega, Emma Meyers back as besties in Netflix's 'Wednesday' Season 2 After a long wait, "Wednesday" is back and it's more "Addams Family" than ever. Jenna Ortega's adorably deadpan Wednesday returns for another year at Nevermore Academy, with mom Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and dad Gomez (Luis Guzmán) playing a more central part in her school life. TV critic Kelly Lawler finds that to be a positive, writing in her Season 2 review that the first four episodes back – with four more coming Sept. 3 – brandish a "general confidence and watchability" missing from the first season. Also back is Emma Myers as Wednesday's bubbly werewolf roommate/bestie Enid. I chatted with the Florida native about all sorts of things, from people yelling "Chicken jockey!" at the "Minecraft" actress to Enid's character growth over her summer break. "She's a bit more headstrong and she goes out and gets what she wants" in Season 2, Myers says. "I love to stay true to the original old Enid, but also just bringing in that subtle strength behind her as well." Have a 'Freakier Friday' with Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis Fans of 2003's original "Freaky Friday" really love that movie and have been bugging stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis for years about when a sequel was coming. But as Curtis told my colleague Erin Jensen, it was all about timing: There was "no possible way" a follow-up could work until Lohan had aged enough to have a 15-year-old daughter to swap bodies with. However, Lohan admits she still had some concerns about her character being a mom. 'Am I going to be swapping with a baby?' she says. 'I'm like, 'How do I act like a toddler?' ' If you dug the OG fantasy comedy, you'll be into this one, too. But with the sequel being rated PG, it's going to bring in a large kid and family contingent, and I put together a parent's guide for what moms and dads need to know about "Freakier Friday." Stream Eddie Murphy's new action comedy 'The Pickup' on Amazon Eddie Murphy teams with Pete Davidson as armored truck drivers caught up in a high-stakes heist in the action comedy "The Pickup," and it's a genre that the comedy legend knows well from back in the '80s, starting with "48 Hrs." Before that it was all "hard-nosed cops," Murphy tells my bud Marco della Cava. "After our movie, it seemed suddenly every tough guy had the one-liners: (Arnold Schwarzenegger's) 'Hasta la vista' or (Bruce Willis') 'Yippee ki-yay.' So, yeah, I kind of pioneered the genre." It's no "Beverly Hills Cop" but there's some great chemistry and banter between Murphy and Davidson. "The Pickup" is one of several new movies streaming this week, including horror film "The Monkey" and anthology flick "Freaky Tales." Even more goodness to check out! Critically endangered species, famed in pop culture, find home in US

Wild axolotls are a brown-grey color, but they can also be albinos, which are the type frequently shown in media. Two critically endangered amphibians have found a new home. SeaWorld San Diego recently acquired two, 10-month-old axolotls, which will be available for public display at the theme park's new Bayside Aquarium, starting Aug. 8, Eric Otjen, vice president of zoological operations, told USA TODAY. Their names are Poppy and Debra. The axolotls were a part of an illegal animal trade and confiscated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Wildlife Confiscations Network, a program under the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, contacted SeaWorld San Diego to inquire about potential housing, Otjen added. Axolotls were classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List in 2006. Last assessed in 2019, there were only between 50 and 1,000 axolotls in the wild. Major threats to axolotls, which are native to southern Mexico City, include residential and commercial development, invasive species, hunting and trapping, and pollution, according to the IUCN. Despite being endangered, axolotls have been widely represented throughout pop culture in recent years, popping up in animated series, video games like Minecraft and as countless plushies. The Pokémon character Wooper is also thought to be inspired by the amphibian. Hip-hop under the sea: SeaWorld's viral hip-hop and R&B summer concert series makes splash with fans What are axolotls? Axolotls are paedomorphic salamanders that, unlike other amphibians, do not go through metamorphosis. For example, frogs are born as tadpoles before transforming into adult frogs, but axolotls do not go through this change. Instead, axolotls keep their external gills and other juvenile features throughout all of adulthood, according to the London Natural History Museum. The special salamanders can live 10-15 years in the wild and grow up to about 3 inches long. Wild axolotls are a brown-grey color, but they can also be albinos, which are frequently depicted in media. They eat mollusks, worms, insect larvae, crustaceans and small fish, according to the museum. What is the rarest animal in the world? See the list of top 10 most endangered species. Specifically, axolotls are native to lakes in southern Mexico City like Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco. But both have been significantly drained to reduce floods, according to the museum. Today, most axolotls are found in the canals of these lakes. Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. Story idea? Email her at gcross@
