Mpumalanga premier jets to China for a trade mission
The Mpumalanga premier, Mandla Ndlovu, is set to return to the People's Republic of China to visit the Shanghai Cooperation Organization for a trade investment mission from June 14 to 23.
During this high-level outbound mission, Ndlovu will visit the city of Longnan, renowned for its traditional medicine, mining and olive oil production. He will also tour the Tianshui Inland Port, a model area for modern agricultural development.
His visit is geared towards the operationalisation of the Mpumalanga International Fresh Produce Market (MIFPM), which is hailed as the first large-scale market infrastructure in the province and is expected to boost international market access.

He will be accompanied by the Mpumalanga MEC for agriculture, rural development and environmental affairs, Nompumelelo Hlophe, and senior officials of the provincial government.
On January 14, Ndlovu undertook the first leg of the mission to China to establish co-operation with major players in the food and logistics industries for the MIFPM, which is not yet operational. That trip focused on Tianshui, Longnan and Xiamen, in Gansu and Fujian provinces respectively, to sign bilateral agreements with reputable trade institutions such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
While Ndlovu is out of the country, the Mpumalanga MEC for co-operative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs, Speed Mashilo, has been sworn in as the acting premier.
The deputy judge president of the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court, Judge Takalani Ratshibvumo, administered the swearing-in on Tuesday, June 10.

Mpumalanga premier forges ties in Longnan, China
The Mpumalanga premier, Mandla Ndlovu, and his entourage went on a high-level outbound investment mission to the People's Republic of China to visit the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. From June 14 to 23, Ndlovu led a delegation comprising the MEC for agriculture, Nompumelelo Hlophe; the director-general, Maggie Skhosana; the head of the Department of Agriculture, Cain Chunda; and other senior officials from the Departments of Agriculture and Treasury. During this high-level mission, Ndlovu signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Longnan Municipality in China. This partnership aligns with the outcomes of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Co-operation Summit. A focus of agreements signed at a national level is bilateral trade and market access, which seeks to expand and diversify trade between the two countries – including the facilitation of market access for South African agricultural products into China. 'As Mpumalanga we are responding to the vision of our president, Cyril Ramaphosa, when he signed this agreement. Through the MoU we entered into, we are defining a series of action plans and interventions to bring to life the accelerated access of trade to and from Mpumalanga and Longnan Municipality. 'This will be realised through the operationalisation of the Mpumalanga International Fresh Produce Market (MIFPM) which will benefit, among others, farmers from previously disadvantaged communities and our people,' said Ndlovu. The visit further focused on other economic activities aimed at improving the provincial economy and reducing the unemployment rate. Longnan Municipality's executive vice mayor, Li Rong, said that with the MoU signed, it is hoped this will not only be a beginning, but an expectation to set a new example for the in-depth and solid development of bilateral co-operation. 'Longnan will henceforth be your home in China. The relationship between China and South Africa is not just a win-win situation, but one of complementary advantages to create shared value together. It is hoped that this will be the beginning of a 'family + partner' relationship between the two sides,' said Rong. Among other sites, the delegation visited the one million hectare Oliver Orchard – a high-value crop farm that explores opportunities across the agricultural value chain. The farm focuses on research, training, production and the agro-processing of olives for consumption. These include dried and fresh olives, olive oils, olive whisky, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of conditions such as cancer and diabetes. According to Ndlovu, Mpumalanga stands to benefit from such an industry – not only through olive imports, but also by twinning local olive farmers with the Longnan market leader and implementing similar farming and agro-processing methods. 'This initiative has the potential to stimulate agro-entrepreneurship, which will in turn strengthen Mpumalanga's economy while helping to reduce the high unemployment rate, particularly among the youth,' said Ndlovu. The institute conducts research across various industries and leads in the prevention, early detection and treatment of chronic illnesses and cancer. 'They use traditional medicine, some of which is plant-based, and also develop modern 'western' medicine. We are also continuing to engage with other businesses in China to explore partnership opportunities,' Ndlovu added. Some of the contentious issues that always crop up are that of academic qualifications or lack thereof and politicians' age. It is not uncommon for ministers to head a ministry for which they have no qualifications. This has drawn criticism from a senior political science lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Zakhele Ndlovu, who believes academic qualifications are a prerequisite for good leadership in the political arena. "Experience and qualifications do matter. The problem is that the African National Congress (ANC) had no governance experience when it assumed power in 1994. What made matters worse is that ANC deployees also lacked relevant qualifications. 90% of our lawmakers have no law background and these MPs also vote on the budget without any knowledge of it," Ndlovu said. He claimed that these members are essentially 'voting fodder' who merely follow the party line. In contrast, in a country like China a political hopeful needs to typically have decades of experience in provincial leadership and academic credentials in engineering, law, economics, or Marxist theory to make a big splash. "Leadership in China is determined by a combination of legal mandate and political merit, ensuring those who rise to the highest offices are proven in governance, ideology, and loyalty to the Party," said China's State Council Information Office in 2023. New Patriotic Alliance (PA) member Liam Jacobs recently alluded that Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen (49) is incompetent and questioned his academic achievements and merit. "I have an honours degree, at that point I was in politics for seven years, and I get told by somebody that just has matric, who is a trust fund baby also, 'we are so happy to be where we are because in the DA, we don't do representivity'," said the 24-year-old. Julius Malema to honour fallen EFF members at mass funeral following tragic bus accident

Image: EFF EFF leader Julius Malema and the top leadership of the party are expected to return to KwaZulu-Natal to attend the mass funeral of the party members that died in a bus accident. Ten party supporters died and scores of others were injured when their bus collided with a long-haul truck near Vryheid, north of the province, on Monday night. They were returning from the party's Youth Day commemoration rally, which was held at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, south of Durban, on Monday. Malema's return to the province was confirmed by the party provincial secretary, Vukani Ndlovu, on Thursday. According to Ndlovu, the party's top leadership would attend the mass funeral over the weekend in remembrance of the fallen heroes and heroines. 'We are expecting our Commander-In-Chief, Julius Malema, and the top national leadership to come back to the province to honour the funeral of our tragically departed fighters.' He said the funeral will take place on Saturday in Vryheid, but the venue still needs to be confirmed, adding that the party is finalising the preparations, including securing a ground or an open space to erect marquees. The party will also carry all funeral costs. Ndlovu said 37 injured people have been discharged, except four who are still in the hospital. Provincial Transport MEC Siboniso Duma visited the scene with department officials, visiting the hospital to see the injured passengers as well as the families of the deceased. Although police are still investigating the cause of the accident, it is believed it was caused by poor visibility in the early hours of darkness, which may have led the bus driver to not be able to see the truck. The MEC said both the SAPS and Road Traffic Management Cooperation will conduct a comprehensive investigation to establish the cause of the accident; however, he received conflicting versions about what happened from the survivors. 'There are allegations that the bus driver tried to overtake. Other survivors have alleged that the bus driver fell asleep at the steering wheel. We do not want to speculate at this stage. We are confident that the investigation will shed light. Critically, we have in the past expressed our concerns about accidents involving trucks,' said Duma. The MEC said trucks are not supposed to be on this road in the first place and should be using the N2, adding that many innocent lives have been lost due to a huge number of trucks on the roads. The truck was believed to be headed to the Richards Bay port to offload coal for export. Over 303,000 trucks, or almost 6,000 trucks every week on average, used the Richards Bay port in the 2024 fiscal year, according to Transnet, Duma stated. He said it has been stated that the port's infrastructure was originally designed for a much smaller volume of trucks, approximately 200 per day.
