It has also regularly undertaken awareness campaigns to make people aware of child rights and the hazardous practice of child labour. Street plays, workshops, seminars, and awareness rallies by students were organised, along with distribution of pamphlets, publicity via loudspeakers, and wall graffities outside panchayats and major govt offices.
Speaking to TOI, Chethakumar, the district labour officer, said the labour department, in coordination with various other departments, conducted more than 3,500 drives against child labour across the district in the last three years.
"It also initiated measures to spread awareness among people about the ill effects of such practices," he added.
However, despite these awareness drives and a strict vigil, many child labourers from migrant families in Bihar, Odisha, and north Karnataka districts continue to be employed in sugarcane fields during the harvest season, and at farmhouses, cattle sheds, and brick kilns.
In view of that state sugarcane growers' association vice-president Attahalli Devaraj told TOI the department must carry out raids on these farms to eradicate the menace.

Retired IG's daughter gets UP cop sacked by dad reinstated
BAREILLY: Perhaps there's a courtroom drama waiting to be made into a movie. Advocate daughter takes on IGP dad, fights charged legal battle, and finally returns to hapless constable the job - and honour - he lost after a departmental inquiry. Here's how it all happened: Lawyer Anura Singh and her father, former IG of Bareilly range, Dr Rakesh Singh, found themselves facing each other in a courtroom tussle over the fate of a UP police head constable who was accused of molesting a minor and terminated from service. Anura, practising at Allahabad high court, not only presented her case successfully but also got her client, Tofeek Ahmad, reinstated. The father and daughter insist there was no personal clash. "There was none," Anura told TOI on Saturday. "My dad acted as a govt representative, and I as a lawyer. UP Police policy is clear: an officer's conduct must not compromise the department's reputation, and this case involved the Pocso Act. As the appellate authority, he had the power to deny reinstatement, but the HC stands above any govt office, which is why we sought and got relief. " She added: "We were both just doing our jobs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Have We All Been Using Mouthwash at the Wrong Time? Undo Even though my father represented the govt's side and I stood at the opposite end, I fulfilled my duty and secured my client's reinstatement orders. The compliance will now be sent to SSP Bareilly, following which, my client will officially regain his position." The HC order came out on July 31 and it was available earlier in the week. Singh added: "I'm proud of her. Anura performed her work in a professional capacity, and I stayed within the legal framework. I've told her to keep working hard, as she has a long and promising career ahead of her." My lawyer put truth above family ties: Cop The case itself dates back to Jan 2023 when Ahmad was arrested for allegedly molesting a 17-year-old girl, a BSF jawan's daughter, aboard the Triveni Express. Following a complaint, Ahmad was suspended, and after a departmental probe, IG Singh (now retired) ordered his termination. Though later acquitted by a lower court due to "lapses" in investigation, Ahmad's plea for reinstatement was rejected by Singh in his official capacity. Unaware of her family connection, Ahmad approached Anura for legal help. She agreed and took on the case, arguing that the termination was "flawed". HC agreed, quashing both the inquiry report and the disciplinary action that had followed. Ahmad is both ecstatic and flabbergasted. Speaking warmly of his "saviour", he said, "I never knew the lawyer defending me was the daughter of the officer who'd ordered my dismissal. She put truth above family ties and upheld her duty to the law. She saved my job..." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Stray dog digs out woman's skeleton with bangles on from fly ash dump
1 2 Nagpur: A stray dog unearthed skeleton of a sari-clad woman from a fly ash dump at a bridge construction site near Besa Power House on Friday evening. Broken bangles on one of the hands of the skeleton led locals to dub it as "bangle hand". Some pieces of broken bangles too were found in the dump. The manner in which the skeleton was buried under fly ash and construction debris led to speculations about foul play. Cops suspect the death likely happened around at least a month ago. The dog dug out bones from the dump — the layers of which had eroded in recent heavy rains — catching the attention of nearby labourers who alerted authorities. A team of Sakkardara police led by senior inspector Mukund Thakare, zonal DCP Rashmitha Rao, crime branch officials, and forensic teams from Government Medical College and Hospital and the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory arrived at the scene. DNA samples were collected, and a specialised mobile forensic unit scoured the site for evidence. As labourers unearthed remaining parts of the skeleton, rumours started doing rounds that one more body, probably that of a minor, too had been found. Police refuted such theories and confirmed that the remains were those of an adult woman. Investigators also found coins, a biscuit wrapper, a doughnut wrapper, rotten khichdi and broken bangles near the remains, suggesting the woman may have been a pavement dweller or a beggar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo "The coins could indicate alms, but the burial site points to something sinister," said Thakare and hinted at probing a possible homicide. An accidental death has been registered for now. "Post-mortem could reveal whether the bones had any injuries," said police, adding that murder charges can be invoked only after forensic confirmation. Police are cross-checking missing persons reports from Nagpur and neighbouring districts to identify the woman. Forensic teams are analysing the evidence, with early findings suggesting the body may have been buried months ago. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Maharashtra Government To Probe 26 Lakh 'Suspect' Beneficiaries Of Ladki Bahin Yojana
Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has ordered a large-scale verification drive targeting over 26 lakh beneficiaries of the Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana amid suspicions of widespread ineligibility and misuse, state Women and Child Development department officials said on Saturday. District administrations have been directed to physically verify applications and eligibility of the listed women based on set criteria, while anganwadi workers have been tasked with conducting door-to-door checks to weed out ineligible claimants, they said. The scheme allows only two women per household between the ages of 21 and 65 to receive benefits, but officials said cases have emerged where more than two women from the same family, or those outside the age bracket, have availed themselves of the monthly payment of Rs 1,500. According to the department's officials, the current scrutiny focuses on two primary conditions, namely age and number of beneficiaries per household. "Women found outside the eligible age group will be disqualified, and in households with more than two beneficiaries, only two will remain eligible. Additional checks are being conducted for bogus documents, false transfer certificates, and ownership of four-wheelers," an official said. Launched by the then Mahayuti government last year, the Ladki Bahin Yojana is credited with helping the ruling alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, retain power comprehensively in the November 2024 assembly polls. Earlier reports revealed that around 14,000 men had received payments, amounting to more than Rs 21 crore, under the scheme for up to 10 months. In a separate probe, more than 2,000 government employees were found to have taken undue advantage of the scheme. "The ongoing verification will also cover Jalna district, where 70,000 beneficiaries are under scrutiny. The WCD department has prepared a list of suspected ineligible claimants, and field checks have already begun in several districts," the official said. The department indicated the verification is also being driven by the mounting financial burden of the scheme on the state exchequer as applications were approved initially without stringent checks in the run-up to the Assembly elections.
