2025 Tony Awards: What to Know Ahead of the Ceremony

New York Times9 hours ago

The Tony Awards are on Sunday night. If you're new to this season, or to theater, here are some things you might want to know.
What are the Tony Awards?
The Tony Awards, presented by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing, is an annual ceremony honoring plays and musicals staged on Broadway. And Broadway, in industry parlance, refers to 41 theaters in and around Times Square, each of which must have at least 500 seats. There are awards in 26 competitive categories, plus a few noncompetitive prizes like lifetime achievement.
The main event is on Sunday, June 8, at 8 p.m. Eastern, broadcast on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime. Cynthia Erivo is hosting at Radio City Music Hall.
Many of the awards for creative teams will be given out at a preshow that starts at 6:40 p.m.; it is streaming on Pluto TV and hosted by Darren Criss and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
Here's more on what to expect, including a 10th anniversary 'Hamilton' performance:
How is Broadway doing?
It's a mixed picture. The 2024-25 season that just ended was the highest grossing in history, and it was the first since the coronavirus pandemic to outgross the prepandemic peak of 2018-19, although those figures are not inflation-adjusted.

Sarah Snook wins Tony for Best Actress in a play for ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray' — two years after ‘Succession'

It's another success(ion) for Sarah Snook. The actress, 37, took home the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play at the 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 8. During her acceptance speech in April of the year, the 'Succession' star got candid about her mindset surrounding the play. Advertisement Snook recalled that a month before opening, she 'felt distant from the play and hadn't learned my lines. I just felt, 'What am I doing? Why am I doing a 60,000 word monologue with an eight-month-old baby?' I felt so stupid.' 'So I was doing a lot of night breastfeeding,' she continued. 'And in the evening when I would wake up then rather than being on my phone and feeding her, I would run over the lines. I find that if you learn your lines at night and then sleep on them they do go in more effectively.' 7 Sarah Snook took on all 26 roles in 'The Picture of Dorian Gray.' Cynthia Erivo and Oprah recreated Wicked's 'holding space' meme to open 2025 Tony Awards

It wasn't that long ago that "holding space" took over as the big internet meme thanks to Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. On Sunday, Erivo and Oprah Winfrey brought it back in a subtle way during the opening of the 2025 Tony Awards. Back in November 2024 during Wicked's press tour, Erivo and Grande had a bizarre moment with an interviewer from about the lyrics of the showstopper "Defying Gravity". In it, the phrase "holding space" was used and the meme was born from there, with Grande also awkwardly holding Erivo's finger amidst the conversation. It's been some time since we, as a society, held space for the "holding space" meme, but on Sunday, Erivo and Oprah Winfrey recreated the moment during the introduction to the 2025 Tony Awards.
