Special holiday dishes provide another meaningful way for these Detroiters to serve others

Yahoo6 hours ago
If side dishes can be called the unsung heroes of any holiday meal, it can also be said that the family members and friends that taste Allison Walker's first attempt at making potato salad during this Fourth of July holiday weekend will be receiving a treat from a native Detroiter who is known for her heroic and giving heart.
A 1979 graduate of the former Dominican High School — an educational institution on Detroit's east side that was deeply rooted in a tradition of service — Walker would go on to become a sergeant with the Detroit Police Department. Walker's 17-and-a-half-year journey with DPD included serving as the commanding officer for the Detroit Police Athletic League during the later stages of her law enforcement career.
Walker describes her service to Detroit PAL as "community policing at its finest" because it closely connected her to the Detroit community she loves, as she watched young people "bloom" while learning new skills.
However, Walker would have another experience during her career with DPD that was the furthest thing from joyful, when she was diagnosed with Heerfordt-Waldenstrom syndrome, a rare manifestation of sarcoidosis, which can present itself as a fever, facial paralysis, inflammation of part of the eye, and enlarged parotid glands — the salivary glands in front of each ear. But true to her giving and service nature, Walker would respond to her health challenge by coming together in 2009 with her fellow New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church member, the late Amy Thompson-Turner, to found the Caring Hands Sarcoidosis Foundation, which provides "patient advocacy, educational materials, and self empowerment" for people suffering with sarcoidosis.
And with caring and loving hands, beginning Tuesday, July 1, Walker embarked on a new journey to prepare a special batch of potato salad for her loved ones to enjoy with their holiday feasts this weekend. In doing so, Walker was connecting with someone who taught her to help others and also how to be brave when confronted with adversity. That person is Walker's late mother, Helen Jean Hart Walker.
"While chopping the ingredients and remembering my mother in the kitchen during the holidays making her famous potato salad, waves of wonderful memories washed over me," explained Walker, who in the absence of her mother's instructions turned to a recipe she found online for "Dee Dee's Soul Food Potato Salad," billed as a "cookout worthy recipe," which Walker discovered at dashofjazz.com.
On the morning of July 2, Walker reported that her oldest daughter Jessica was already delivering a bowl of the potato salad to a friend and that a good-size portion was in her freezer for her son Christopher to enjoy over the weekend.
"I'm not sure if it's supposed to be frozen, but nothing beats a try than a try, and I'll be nibbling on the rest," Walker, who received an enormous helping hand in the kitchen from her grandson, Joshua Sidney Chapman, said. "Memories of my mother making potato salad for holidays were precious moments that I had long forgotten about, and I am thankful for the opportunity to relive them again while doing something nice for family and friends."
On the afternoon of July 3, a thankful tone also could be heard in the voice of Temika Wallace, the kitchen manager at St. Patrick Senior Center (Detroit's largest health, wellness and activities center for older adults, located at 58 Parsons, off Woodward behind Orchestra Hall), which has a well-earned reputation for serving some of the heartiest lunches in the city.
For Wallace, a week with a summer holiday provides an opportunity for her to feed seniors at St. Pat's, as well as family and friends, during the holiday weekend, in an extra-special way that she believes is more than worth the extra effort that is required to pull off the feat.
"I love working at St. Pat and making our seniors happy and full, and I feel the same way about the food that I will be preparing for my family and friends for the holiday," said Wallace, a longtime Midtown resident, who will be making her famous seafood pasta salad this holiday weekend to accompany ribs and chicken cooked on the grill. "I make my seafood pasta salad from scratch, and I make it with my own ingredients. And it's just good to see everyone when they're enjoying it and wanting more."
Lisa Gonzalez has a knack for doing more and more for southwest Detroit residents of all ages through three community organizations that she supports: Congress of Communities, a resident-led organizing and advocacy agency that facilitates solutions addressing community needs and concerns; Detroit Champions of Hope, which champions the importance of early childhood care while stressing the importance of parents, caregivers and child care providers as a child's first teachers, and the Mexican Patriotic Committee of Metro Detroit, which promotes Mexican arts and cultural activities, including the Miss Mexico Pageant, an event that symbolizes an ongoing commitment to empowering young women in the community.
With everything Gonzalez has going on, after a long day of activities and meetings, during the evening of July 1, Gonzalez was still excited to talk about foods that will be enjoyed in her community over the holiday weekend. The word "yummy" was repeated constantly by Gonzalez as she described carne asada, a traditional Mexican dish composed of marinated skirt steak or flank steak that has been grilled and thinly sliced.
But after all the grilled food is eaten, Gonzalez says there is another far more simple dish that she will be looking forward to that members of any any community can whip up, and that is Fresas con Crema — strawberries and cream. Gonzalez likes to make the dish using Cool Whip with blueberries on top,. But more than that, she says, the presence of food favorites during a holiday or anytime is a sure sign that good things are going on in a community.

"In our community, we enjoy our food," Gonzalez said with a spark in her voice, even after participating in a late community meeting minutes before. "Even if it's just chips and salsa, or fruit; whenever we come together for anything, we'll have food. It's one of our favorite things to do. It's a source of joy and unity."

Amomi: The Lifelong Women's Health App Expanding Its Presence in the U.S. Market

'At that time, I truly understood how hopeless and desperate it can feel for women trying to get pregnant naturally-before even considering expensive treatments like IVF,' said Caroline. 'I wanted to build something that actually remembers and respects women's history. That's what Amomi is.' WASHINGTON, DC / ACCESS Newswire / July 4, 2025 / Amomi, the fast-growing women's health app, is entering a new chapter of growth-bringing its full-cycle, ad-light experience to more women in the United States. After gaining strong traction and sponsorships in Japan from global names like Dyson and Rakuten, Amomi is now seeking aligned brand partners in the U.S. to fuel its next stage of user-first expansion. Amomi was born from a deeply personal experience. After suffering two miscarriages, founder Caroline La found herself frustrated that the period-tracking app she had relied on failed to retain and reflect her reproductive history. That gap made it difficult to plan for pregnancy and left her feeling isolated during one of the most vulnerable periods of her life. 'At that time, I truly understood how hopeless and desperate it can feel for women trying to get pregnant naturally-before even considering expensive treatments like IVF,' said Caroline. 'I wanted to build something that actually remembers and respects women's history. That's what Amomi is.' Built to Last: A Tool for Life, Not Just a Phase Amomi is not just another period tracker or pregnancy calendar. It's a full-lifecycle companion that supports women from menstruation through fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. By continuously capturing users' reproductive history over time, Amomi provides personalized, predictive insights designed to evolve with each individual's journey. 'Studies suggest that women who have had multiple pregnancies and breastfed may experience menopause later than women who have not,' Caroline noted. 'When apps fail to capture this data, predictions about fertility windows or menopause timing can be completely off. That's why comprehensive tracking is not just helpful-it's essential.' Caroline has made it her mission to keep the app accessible and honest-even if that means taking the longer road. Despite receiving multiple funding offers, she continues to bootstrap the app while working full-time as an executive at a major IT company. 'I don't think users should have to pay to access their own health data,' she explains. 'Instead, I want to provide relevant content and personalized recommendations-while contributing value to brands that truly support women. It has to be a win-win.' Why Amomi Stands Out in a Crowded Market In a landscape filled with apps like Flo, The Bump, and What to Expect, Amomi distinguishes itself through: Full lifecycle support-from menstruation to menopause Longitudinal health tracking for more accurate, personalized predictions Minimal ads and clean, distraction-free design Scientifically grounded insights that reflect real-life complexity A founder-led mission that prioritizes authenticity and user trust Partner With Purpose Amomi is now welcoming select sponsors who align with its mission. Sponsorship tiers (Platinum, Gold, Silver) come with high-impact, non-intrusive placements-such as homepage product features, in-app content mentions, registry highlights, and community integrations. Visual mockups in Amomi's sponsor kit help brands see exactly how their products will live naturally within the user experience. 'We're not interested in cluttering the app with ads,' Caroline said. 'We design sponsorships that feel helpful-not disruptive. The right partners make the experience better, not worse.' About Amomi Amomi is a women's health app designed to support users across their entire reproductive journey-from menstruation and fertility to pregnancy and menopause. Built for comfort, clarity, and continuity, Amomi empowers women to track, understand, and act on their health with minimal ads and maximum personalization. Clear Start Tax Issues Alert: No Federal Penalty for the Uninsured, But Some States May Still Charge You

Clear Start Tax clarifies why some states still require Form 1095-A, even though the federal health coverage penalty was eliminated. IRVINE, CA / ACCESS Newswire / July 4, 2025 / Despite the federal penalty being eliminated, many taxpayers are still receiving health insurance forms, leaving them unsure whether action is required. Clear Start Tax is warning filers not to ignore Form 1095-A, especially in states that still enforce their own coverage mandates. 'The IRS eliminated the federal individual mandate penalty in 2019, but that doesn't mean everyone is off the hook,' said the Head of Client Solutions at Clear Start Tax. 'Several states still require proof of coverage, and skipping Form 1095-A or other related forms can delay your return - or worse, result in state fines.' Why You May Still Receive Form 1095-A Many taxpayers think the form is irrelevant now that the ACA penalty is gone. But Clear Start Tax explains that Form 1095-A is still issued if you enrolled in a Marketplace health plan, and it plays a key role in reconciling any premium tax credits you received. It's also used to reconcile the advance premium tax credits you received with what you actually qualified for, based on your reported income. If the numbers don't match what the IRS or your state expects, your refund could be delayed or adjusted. States That Still Enforce Health Insurance Penalties Even though the federal penalty is gone, a growing number of states have their own health coverage mandates - and their own penalties. As of 2025, these states still impose a fine if you go without qualifying coverage and don't qualify for an exemption: California Massachusetts New Jersey Rhode Island Vermont (reporting only) Washington, D.C. These states often require taxpayers to file specific health coverage forms along with their state return, and missing or inaccurate documentation can trigger state-level penalties. What to Do If You're Uninsured or Received a Marketplace Form Clear Start Tax advises taxpayers to take the following steps to avoid penalties or processing delays: Don't ignore Form 1095-A - include it with your return if applicable. Check your state's requirements if you live in one that enforces coverage mandates during the tax year. Make sure your premium tax credits were reconciled properly to avoid refund issues. File all required health coverage documentation, especially in California, where the Franchise Tax Board tracks non-compliance aggressively. 'Many people are caught off guard because they assume health insurance is no longer part of tax season,' said the Head of Client Solutions. 'But in states with mandates, missing documentation can still cost you money.' Behind on Taxes or Hit With a Penalty? Relief May Be Available Health-related penalties can overlap with broader tax issues, including unfiled returns, missed income, or existing IRS debt. Clear Start Tax helps individuals nationwide resolve complex tax situations and determine eligibility for the IRS Fresh Start Program. By answering a few simple questions , taxpayers can find out if they're eligible for the IRS Fresh Start Program and take the first step toward resolving their tax debt.
