CGTN: China's Xizang Reaches Watershed Moment In Historic Transformation
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- An article from China Global Television Network (CGTN) spotlights the sweeping social and economic transformation of China's Xizang Autonomous Region, tracing its journey from a feudal theocracy to a modern, thriving society shaped by people-centred governance.
The state-run media outlet emphasises that Xizang's progress cannot be viewed in isolation, framing its development as a shift from widespread serfdom — where 95 per cent of the population lived without land, education, or dignity — to citizen-led self-governance under China's system of regional ethnic autonomy.
Citing government data, CGTN in a statement notes that as of 2025, ethnic minorities make up 89.2 per cent of Xizang's 42,000-plus National People's Congress deputies, with more than 57 per cent of township-level leadership roles held by minorities. Voter turnout exceeds 90 per cent at the grassroots level.
The article also highlights major economic gains. Xizang's gross domestic product (GDP) rose from 174 million Chinese yuan (around US$24.3 million) in 1959 to more than 276 billion Chinese yuan (around US$38.5 billion) in 2024, with per capita disposable income exceeding 31,000 Chinese yuan (around US$4,300). (US$1=RM4.22)
The significant transformation, resilience and renewal of the region are witnessing residents now enjoying a steadily rising quality of life, with average life expectancy climbing to 72.5 years in 2024. The region officially eliminated absolute poverty in 2019, lifting 628,000 people out of hardship.
Education and healthcare reforms have also played a central role, with nine-year compulsory education now reaching 98 per cent of school-age children, and higher education enrolment topping 57 per cent. Local access to healthcare has improved dramatically, with insurance programmes covering most costs for major treatments.
The region has also expanded its global ties. Trade links now span 140 countries and regions, while tourism drew 64 million visitors in 2024, generating 75 billion Chinese yuan in revenue.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, at a high-level meeting, once called for further efforts to ensure national security and enduring peace and stability, steadily improve people's lives, maintain a good environment, solidify border defence and safeguard frontier security in Xizang.
CGTN describes Xizang's transformation as a "rebirth" — a stark departure from its past and a reflection of policies focused on stability, development, and inclusion.

All-Party Parliamentary Group To Draft Hate Speech Guidelines
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) on Racial and Religious Harmony is working on a document to define and set standards for hate speech that align with Malaysia's multi-ethnic society. In a statement today, the group said the document could serve as a guideline for law enforcement, aiming to clarify provisions related to hate speech and the 3R issue (race, religion, and royalty) under the Communications and Multimedia Act, the Online Safety Act, and the Penal Code. It said that consultations with communities and stakeholders will be conducted soon to ensure the document fits Malaysia's context and needs. 'The proposal to draft this document was agreed upon at the second APPGM-Racial and Religious Harmony meeting yesterday, chaired by Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan, who is the APPGM chairman, and attended by cross-party MPs,' the statement read. Meanwhile, in the lead-up to Budget 2026, the group has backed the National Unity Ministry's proposal to increase allocations for each Rukun Tetangga from RM6,000 to RM10,000. It also suggested that the government introduce tax exemption incentives for companies contributing to unity and nation-building activities. 'In addition, the group believes there is a need for the MADANI Government to increase funding for the implementation of unity, nation-building and national integration programmes to RM100 million under Budget 2026, compared to RM50 million in Budget 2025. 'The group reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that national policies and resources continue to be marshalled to build a more inclusive, united and harmonious society,' the statement said. Meanwhile, during a press conference at Parliament House today, Government Backbenchers Club (BBC) chairman Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar), along with other Malaysian MPs, urged Malaysians to join the 'Perhimpunan Bersamamu Gaza' and '1000 Flotilla Nusantara Break the Siege' at Dataran Merdeka this Sunday.

Sime Darby Property's 2Q Net Profit Slips To RM143.54 Mln
REGION - CENTRAL > NEWS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Sime Darby Property Bhd's (SDP) net profit dipped to RM143.54 million in the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q 2025) from RM161.96 million in the same period a year ago. Revenue for the quarter under review eased RM1.06 billion from RM1.20 billion previously, mainly driven by a lower contribution from the property development segment, it said in a Bursa Malaysia filing today. 'For the first half of 2025 (IH 2025), the group recorded revenue of RM1.93 billion, representing a decrease of 11.4 per cent compared to RM2.18 billion in the corresponding period in prior year, primarily attributed by a 13 per cent decrease in the property development segment,' it said. bootstrap slideshow SDP said the segment's revenue dropped to RM1.80 billion, compared to RM2.07 billion previously. This was due to lower financial progress from industrial products, timing of revenue recognition and projects in the initial construction stage. 'The property development segment remained the group's main revenue driver, contributing 93.3 per cent of its total revenue. In contrast, 1H 2024 benefited from higher sales and financial progress from industrial products and non-core land sales. Correspondingly, segmental profit also fell to RM377.1 million from RM480.8 million in the same period last year,' said SDP. In a separate statement, SDP's group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Azmir Merican said 1H 2025 results demonstrated the strength of its sales momentum and diversified portfolio. 'We are pleased with the growth in our investment and asset management (IAM) segment, driven by strong retail performance,' he said. The group's IAM segment recorded a 34 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) revenue growth to RM78 million.
