Congress always betrayed, suppressed OBCs: BJP on fresh caste census in Karnataka
New Delhi, June 16 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday criticised the Congress party for suppressing the rights of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) following Karnataka government's decision to scrap an earlier caste survey and conduct a fresh one, which involved a public expenditure of over Rs 165 crore. Addressing a press conference here, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav alleged Congress has historically betrayed the OBC community by ignoring recommendations of commissions like the Kaka Kalelkar and Mandal Commissions aimed to empower the OBCs community. "The OBC community has always been betrayed by the Congress. If the Congress had genuine intent, it would have formed a new commission after scrapping the Kaka Kalelkar Commission on empowering the OBCs ... Instead, they dismissed the commission's report and continued to rule... 'Later, when the Mandal Commission was constituted and the Supreme Court upheld its legality, the Congress worked to weaken the OBC Commission,' Yadav said at a press conference here. He also pointed out internal contradictions in the Congress, noting that Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the survey decision was directed by Congress leadership, not the state government, likening this to previous interventions by Sonia Gandhi-led bodies during the UPA regime. 'Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the decision for a new caste survey was not his government's but the Congress leadership's. Such an intervention of the party in the government's decision-making? Is there interference from Sonia Gandhi-headed National Advisory Council which played a key role in the UPA government. There should be an accountability about the public expenditure...,' he said. The BJP's criticism of the Congress over the OBC caste survey in Karnataka also comes on the same day that the central government issued a notification for the 16th Caste Census, scheduled for 2027. Yadav credited the BJP government for initiatives benefiting OBCs, including granting constitutional status to the OBC Commission and introducing reservations for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). He praised PM Modi's welfare schemes for lifting millions out of poverty. He said, "It was the BJP government that granted reservation to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Congress has never stood with the poor, OBCs, or SC/ST communities. Congress MP & LoP Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, calls Karnataka an ideal state — but the timing and internal contradictions of their stance show that social justice is merely a showpiece for Congress, not a genuine commitment. Misleading the OBC community has been Congress' policy; delivering justice to them has never been their intent..." "We thank our PM for addressing the long-standing issue of reservations in admissions to central schools... Through his economic welfare schemes, crores of people have been lifted out of poverty," said the senior BJP leader. Responding to Congress' demand to adopt the Telangana census model for caste data, Yadav took a jab at the Opposition, remarking, 'If that's the case, then why haven't they are not implementing the Telangana model in Karnataka, where they are in power?' Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran begins fast ahead of Lord Muruga devotees' conference
Chennai: Tamil Nadu unit Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nainar Nagenthran on Monday commenced a week-long fast seeking divine blessings for the upcoming Lord Muruga Devotees' Conference in Madurai, and to press for six key prayers aimed at the state's welfare. The conference, organised by Muruga devotees from across Tamil Nadu, is set to take place on June 22, coinciding with the auspicious Krithikai day. The event is expected to draw thousands of devotees and religious leaders from across the state. Speaking to the media before beginning his fast, Nainar Nagenthran made a fervent appeal to Lord Muruga, announcing that he would observe the fast from June 16 to June 22, invoking divine support for both the conference's success and broader well-being of Tamil Nadu. 'I humbly place six heartfelt prayers at the feet of Lord Muruga and urge all devotees to join me in seeking his blessings for our state,' Nagenthran said, adding that the tradition of fasting and supplication is deeply rooted in Tamil culture and spiritual practice. Outlining his prayer focussing on six key points, the BJP leader emphasised the following which include preservation of Tamil language, culture, and temples. Realisation of a prosperous Tamil Nadu aligned with a developed India by 2047, Safety, dignity, and empowerment of women, Creation of a drug-free Tamil Nadu, Promotion of social harmony and protection of backward communities, and Strengthening rural infrastructure and advancing agricultural development. He called on devotees to offer their prayers to Lord Muruga -- revered as the King of Kurinji and the bearer of the Vel -- for these noble causes. 'With the divine guidance of Lord Kandan, our state can progress toward peace, unity, and prosperity,' he said. The fast and the upcoming conference are seen as efforts by the BJP to deepen its spiritual and cultural outreach in Tamil Nadu, where Muruga worship holds immense cultural significance. Union Minister Puri shrugs off pro-Khalistan protests in Canada ahead of G7 summit
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday dismissed the recent pro-Khalistani protests in Canada ahead of the G7 Summit, calling the demonstrators hired stooges who should not be taken seriously. 'One more video is going viral in which these people are protesting against the neighbouring country after they did not get funding from them,' Mr Puri said. 'These are hired stooges. Don't take them seriously,' he said. The Minister made the remarks while inaugurating an exhibition marking 11 years of PM Narendra Modi's Government and 100 days of the Delhi Government at the Delhi BJP headquarters. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to arrive in Canada to attend the G-7 summit from Cyprus on the second leg of his visit, at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Addressing concerns around rising fuel prices amid the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, Mr Puri assured that India's energy reserves remain robust. 'Today we have an energy situation where we have enough stocks, our own production is going up. Our bio-fuel blending was 1.4 per cent in 2014, now it has reached 20 per cent now,' he said. The Minister also noted recent advancements in India's green energy sector. 'Green hydrogen, which was thought to be the fuel of the future, is now becoming a reality. Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) has issued a tender for its Panipat refinery, and hydrogen-fuelled buses will run in the coming times,' Mr Puri added. Meanwhile, the Iran-Israel tensions have rattled global markets, pushing oil and gold prices higher. On Monday (June 16, 2025), U.S. benchmark crude oil rose by 20 cents to $73.18 per barrel, while Brent crude gained 95 cents to $75.18 per barrel. Asian markets responded cautiously, with mixed performance amid fears of a broader regional conflict and disruptions to global oil supply chains.
