Penn State earns top-20 finish in 2024-25 Directors' Cup standings

USA Today26-06-2025
With the college baseball season recently concluding, it marks the end of the 2024-25 athletic season. As is tradition, Learfield released the final standings for the Directors' Cup, an annual rankings used to measure a university's overall athletic success from each school year.
On Thursday, Learfield announced the final tally, which is based on a formula that awards points for success in different sports. Penn State finished the season with the No. 16 overall ranking, which comes after being ranked No. 3 after the fall rankings were released.
Mediocre performances from the baseball, softball, men's volleyball and women's lacrosse teams hurt the Nittany Lions, but they still finished higher than their No. 24 ranking a year prior.
Penn State finished with 893 total points, with 213.5 from fall sports, 335 from winter sports and just 143 in the spring window. Men's wrestling and women's volleyball each contributed 100 points while earning national championships, while football, women's soccer, fencing and men's lacrosse all eclipsed 70 points. Both basketball teams, as well as the baseball and softball teams, finished with no points.
The Nittany Lions placed fifth among Big Ten schools, trailing No. 2 USC, No. 5 UCLA, No. 8 Ohio State and No. 13 Michigan. The conference as a whole was successful, with every school ranking in the top 90 spots out of over 300 total Division I institutions. Additionally, every Big Ten school besides Iowa and Rutgers ranked in the top 50.

Three Ohio State football players named to the 2025 preseason AP All-American teams

No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Penn State each had three players selected for the preseason AP All-America team. The Southeastern Conference had 12 players on the 27-man first team. We've seen our fair share of preseason hype and accolades for many members of the Ohio State football team as we get closer and closer to the start of the season, but we got a look at another one today when the Associated Press released its 2025 preseason All-Americans on Monday. It won't take you very long to guess two players who made the first-team -- being that the same two players have made every other preseason All-American team published and might be the two best players in the country. So, yeah -- safety Caleb Downs and receiver Jeremiah Smith are also listed on the AP All-American team. There is another Buckeye that made the AP All-American team, however, appearing on the second team, and that was none other than tight end Max Klare, who transferred from Purdue to raise his stock and look to be a part of a winning culture. He might end up being the best tight end in the game when it's all said and done after hauling in 51 receptions for 684 yards and four touchdowns for the Boilermakers last season. These three players, and many others, have racked up an awful lot of accolades for this year's version of the Ohio State Buckeyes, and we can't wait to kick the season off to see if the hype matches the actual on-field product when the seal is broken on the season come Aug. 30 vs. the Texas Longhorns. Class of 2027 4-star cornerback commits to Penn State

Penn State is already laying the groundwork for a solid recruiting class in 2027 as it gets closer to the start of the 2026 season. Penn State added to the Class of 2027 when the Nittany Lions received a commitment from in-state cornerback Gabriel Jenkins to start the week. Jenkins is a four-star recruit in the Class of 2027 according to 247Sports composite. Jenkins ranks as the No. 191 player in the country, No. 19 CB in the country and No. 8 player in the state of Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh native is the third recruit from the Pittsburgh area to commit in the Class of 2027. He joins running back Kemon Spell and wide receiver Khalil Taylor as a Steel City native to commit. The Imani Christian Academy product stands at 6-foot and 187 pounds entering his junior season. Jenkins' commitment allows Penn State to jump Sacramento State as the No. 1 class in the country in the 2027 recruiting cycle. The Nittany Lions' recruiting class consists of all in-state members with four commits, two 5-stars and two 4-stars in the early process of the recruiting class.

No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Penn State each place 3 players on Associated Press preseason All-America first team

Texas and Penn State, the top two teams in The Associated Press preseason Top 25, each had three players selected for the preseason AP All-America team announced Monday. No. 1 Texas had one player from each level of its defense on the first team: edge rusher Colin Simmons, linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. and safety Michael Taaffe. No. 2 Penn State's picks were running back Nicholas Singleton, offensive lineman Olaivavega Ioane and defensive lineman Zane Durant. No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Clemson, No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 8 Alabama and Pittsburgh each had two players on the first team. The Southeastern Conference had 12 players on the 27-man first team determined by media members on the AP Top 25 voting panel. The Big Ten had seven players, the ACC four and the Big 12 two. Clemson's Cade Klubnik was the overwhelming preseason choice for first-team quarterback after throwing for 3,639 yards with 39 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Ohio State safety Caleb Downs and Florida center Jake Slaughter are returning first-team AP All-Americans. Downs, whose late interception against Texas helped wrap up a College Football Playoff semifinal win for defending champion Ohio State, starred as a freshman at Alabama two years ago and established himself as the nation's top safety in his first season with the Buckeyes. He's a projected top-three pick in the 2026 NFL draft. Downs was joined on the preseason-All-America first team by Buckeyes receiver Jeremiah Smith. Slaughter, a leading candidate for the Rimington Trophy as the nation's top center, played 800 snaps in his breakout season for the Gators. He allowed just one sack and was among the highest-rated run and pass blockers in the country, according to Pro Football Focus. The AP All-America team for this season will be released in December.
