Aussie cycling star, 34, forced to put career on hold just a month before the Tour de France because of life-threatening health issue
Aussie cycling superstar Michael Matthews has been forced to drop out of this year's Tour de France and has put his career on hold after team doctors discovered he had 'signs of a pulmonary embolism'.
The discovery was made after the Jayco Alula cyclist, aged 34, was attending an altitude training camp.
On learning of the issue, Jayco Alula's medical team opted to 'pause all physical activity for the rider until further notice, as a precautionary measure.'
The Aussie sprinter, who hails from Canberra, was due to appear at the Tour de France, which begins on July 5, for the ninth time in his career.
During his esteemed career, Matthews has won four individual stages on the Tour, having also claimed the Points Classification in 2017.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Jayco Allula confirmed that his 'health condition is stable.'
'The Medical Team are now thoroughly investigating the extent of the issue and possible cause, to define a safe and optimal recovery process for the athlete,' a spokesperson wrote.
'During this period of investigation, as a safeguarding measure, Matthews will refrain from competition to ensure there is no risk to his health and well-being, therefore ruling out his participation in the upcoming Tour de France.'
Matthews had enjoyed a fine start to 2025, winning the Eschborn-Frankfurt UCI World Tour race, while placing fourth in the Milan-San Remo race and fifth in the Amstel Gold Race.
Matthews, meanwhile, thanked his friends, family and followers for showing him support on Sunday.
'Thank you everyone for the kind messages, I will get around to replying to you all, just taking a few days to process the news but my condition is OK and I will make a full recovery, it will just take some time. Thank you all,' he wrote on his Instagram.
A pulmonary embolism is a serious condition where a blood clot blocks a vessel in a person's lungs.
According to the NHS, a pulmonary embolism can in some cases be life-threatening if not treated quickly.
Individuals can experience difficulty breathing, chest pain or even coughing up blood as a result of the condition.

Alexander Zverev delivers X-rated on-court message to Taylor Fritz - after clashing with rival's influencer girlfriend at Wimbledon
Alexander Zverev delivered a light-hearted, X-rated jibe at rival Taylor Fritz after their clash on Sunday afternoon. The German suffered his fifth consecutive defeat against American star Fritz, who clinched the Stuttgart Open title after a 6-3, 7-6 win. Evidently, Zverev's poor record against his rival was playing on his mind as he delivered a post-match speech, where he jokingly took aim at Fritz. Speaking on court, Zverev said: 'Taylor, I'm f***ing tired of you. I don't wanna see you again over the next 2 to 3 years. 'Please stay away from me. Don't come to Germany anymore'. While Fritz and Zverev have clashed on the court numerous times over the years, the same can also be said for the German star and his rival's girlfriend, Morgan Riddle. It was after the five-set thriller at Wimbledon last year that Zverev expressed displeasure over the noise coming from Fritz's box, where his girlfriend Morgan Riddle was seated. Adding to the intrigue was a curious social media post from Riddle that many saw as a reference to 2020 domestic abuse claims against Zverev - which he denied. A social media influencer who has 17.2million likes on TikTok, Riddle has since deleted an Instagram video that included the caption: 'when your man wins 4 the girls.' She had posted a picture of the court to her story and wrote, 'cheer loud ladies.' That post was also taken down. After that match, Fritz sat down for an interview with The Tennis Channel and shed light on the feud - following a discussion with Zverev on court. He explained: 'I think he was a little upset about my team members cheering for me when he was injured but he said: "It's nothing to do with you. You're all good..." Whatever, it's all good.' Zverev said afterwards that he was upset with some people in Fritz's box who 'may not be from the tennis world.' 'His team is extremely respectful. I think his coach, his physio, also his second coach, they're extremely respectful,' Zverev said. 'I think there's some other people that maybe are in the box that are not maybe from the tennis world, that are not maybe from particularly watching every single match. They were a bit over the top.' Zverev agreed to pay around $240,000, last year, in a June settlement with his accuser, the mother of his child, but was not convicted of any crime and maintains his innocence. The ATP investigated the claims (via an outside firm) for 15 months but ultimately did not discipline Zverev on the basis of insufficient evidence. Following his settlement in June, Zverev said 'I told you so from the start, I told everybody. I'm happy that it's over. Yeah, nothing else more to say.' Meanwhile, after Fritz knocked Zverev out in New York with a four-set victory to reach the US Open semifinals last year, Riddle took to social media to celebrate the victory. She shared a video from Arthur Ashe taking in the full surroundings and, alongside three nail polish emojis, wrote: 'Semi finalsssss'.

Tadej Pogacar completes Criterium du Dauphiné victory with podium finish
Reigning Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar wrapped up the Criterium du Dauphiné on Sunday with a podium finish in the eighth and final stage, which was won by France's Lenny Martinez. A winner of three stages in total, the Slovene dominated the 77th edition of the Dauphine to top the overall classification by 59sec ahead of Dane Jonas Vingegaard – three weeks before the start of the Tour de France. 'It's been a really amazing week,' Pogacar said. 'Once again today, the team did a great job. We managed to defend the (yellow) jersey and we can go home happy and prepare for the Tour.' German Florian Lipowitz completed the podium, 2min 38sec behind Pogacar, while Belgium's Remco Evenepoel came fourth at 4min 21sec. Sunday's final stage was a 133.3km mountainous trek from Val-d'Arc to Val-Cenis, with an uphill finish at the Plateau du Mont-Cenis. The 21-year-old Martinez caught Spaniard Enric Mas with eight kilometres to go to give France its first victory in this Dauphiné, finishing 34sec ahead of Vingegaard and Pogacar. Vingegaard tried to catch Martinez but was unable to shake off Pogacar. The Dane and the Slovenian then stopped attacking and rolled in together. Pogacar now has 99 victories to his name, a record for an active rider at just 26 years of age. 'There's a lot of positives from this week and we turned all the negatives into positives, so it's all good,' said Pogacar, who bounced back from a poor time-trial performance in stage four to lay down the gauntlet to his principal Tour rivals. 'There's not much to do ahead of the Tour. I rest a bit, maybe some extra work for the time-trial, and then I'm ready,' the three-time Tour winner added. The 2025 Tour de France runs from 5-27 July, with Pogacar the firm favourite after his first Dauphiné crown.
