Andrea Berta risking Arsenal backlash after Viktor Gyokeres transfer decision

Daily Mirror26-07-2025
Viktor Gyokeres has finally become an Arsenal player after his long-awaited transfer was finally confirmed on Saturday evening, but the Gunners had long been expected to sign a different forward instead
Andrea Berta could face backlash behind the scenes at Arsenal if Viktor Gyokeres fails to deliver. Gyokeres, 27, was finally confirmed as an Arsenal player on Saturday after the club agreed to pay Sporting Lisbon a total of £63.7million.

The deal is comprised of a guaranteed £55million plus £8.7m in performance-related add-ons. Arsenal's capture of the Sweden international ends their long wait to sign a striker and the decision is without doubt Berta's biggest since taking over as sporting director in March.

Gyokeres' 97 goals in 102 games in two seasons with Sporting made him one of Europe's prolific strikers. But the Gunners' new No.14 wasn't the only candidate

RB Leipzig hotshot Benjamin Sesko was actually the preferred target for many involved in recruitment at Arsenal, according to the Telegraph. Five years younger than Gyokeres and with more experience in a top-five league, Sesko was seen an exciting option with potentially more upside.
Ultimately, the Gunners chose to pursue Gyokeres after Berta reportedly held talks with both players' representatives and, in a tactical ploy, made each of them feel as if they were the preferred option. Sesko, 22, was deemed to be more expensive, however, and coupled with Gyokeres' desire to join Arsenal, club chiefs went with the latter, who was always Berta's preferred pick.
It's now claimed in a separate report that the Slovenian is on Newcastle's radar while he's also been linked with Manchester United. Should Sesko move to the Premier League and thrive more than Gyokeres, Berta's decision could come under internal scrutiny.
Arsenal, though, are confident that the former Coventry City star will prove to be the right answer to their striker puzzle. Berta is 'so pleased' to have secured Gyokeres' signature and described the deal which he's brokered with Sporting as 'excellent'.
"Viktor is an exceptional talent and has consistently demonstrated he has the qualities and winning mentality required of a top-level centre-forward," the ex-Atletico Madrid transfer chief said in a statement.
"His physicality, intelligence and work ethic make him a perfect fit for our vision. We are confident Viktor will have a major impact on the pitch and become an important figure in our dressing room. Welcome, Viktor."

As for Mikel Arteta, the man tasked with getting the best out of Gyokeres, he added: "We're absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club. The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves.

"Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.
"We're excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to start working with him. We welcome Viktor and his family to Arsenal."

Mikel Arteta drops major hint over Max Dowman ahead of new Premier League season

Mikel Arteta has hinted Arsenal's 15-year-old wonderkid Max Dowman is set for a major breakthrough in the upcoming Premier League campaign. The teenager has shined for the Gunners in pre-season, once again registering an impressive performance in Wednesday's 3-2 friendly defeat to Villarreal at the Emirates. Dowman is hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Hale End academy graduates Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri and break into Arsenal's first team. Ahead of Arsenal's opening game of the season against Manchester United on August 17, Arteta says Dowman 'deserves to have chances' if he keeps up his stunning form. Quizzed about the England U17 international attacking midfielder, who has conjured up a remarkable 20 goals and 10 assists in just 25 games for Arsenal U18s, Arteta said: 'He continues to impress, without a doubt. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. 'The impact he had in the game again today, the efficiency that he shows in every attack and action, it's incredible. 'He deserves to have chances and if he continues like this, let's see what happens. 'The most similar one was Ethan [Nwaneri]. I think it was a different stage there, but he managed it so fast. 'Even last year when he was training with us, he was doing this kind of thing in training and now he's doing it in the game consistently. 'So the three or four games that he's played, he's managed to impact and have big moments in the game. '[When my players] have the ball, they give it to [Dowman]. That tells you how much they trust him and the relationship he's building within the team. 'I think there's nothing better than that. The confidence they show to make things happen and the constant connection they have with him.' Quizzed directly if Dowman will feature in the Premier League, Arteta added: 'Let's see how it goes. Let's go into Saturday, into the break as well. 'He needs a little break as well because he hasn't had any holidays really, so in the next few days he's going to have a break which I think he needs and then he'll probably be ready again to go.' More Trending Meanwhile, former Arsenal wonderkid Charlie Patino has urged Dowman to stay grounded ahead of a potential Premier League debut, telling The Sun: 'I'd say to him to keep your head down, be grounded, be humble. 'Listen to the people around you. Listen to the players who've got a lot more experience. 'He's a lot younger than me. I've seen a few clips and he looks like a very quality player. At an age like that, we don't want to put too much pressure on him. 'It's all about timing. Time will tell where he gets to. I wish him all the best in what he does.' Benjamin Sesko could ruin Man Utd's move for Brighton star Carlos Baleba

Benjamin Sesko is on the verge of a move to Manchester United from RB Leipzig but there is some less-than-welcome news over another of the Red Devils' transfer targets Manchester United's pursuit of Benjamin Sesko could come at a cost, and not just a literal one. By prioritising the Slovenian striker, Ruben Amorim's side are unlikely to be able to plug their midfield hole with Carlos Baleba. ‌ United are set to pay up to £74million including add-ons for Sesko, with RB Leipzig confirming the player is training away from the rest of their squad. The Red Devils are confident they have beaten Newcastle to his signing, with the deal set to take their summer spending to around £200m in total. ‌ They have also explored a move for Brighton star Baleba, whou wouldn't come cheap. According to The Athletic, the move is likely unrealistic given United's spending power, but they are still testing the water in an effort to get an idea of whether a move might be possible. ‌ Signing both Sesko and Baleba in this window would require significant sales elsewhere, something which doesn't appear to be on the cards. There is likely to be some money coming in, with Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony all potentially leaving before the window shuts, but that would counterbalanced by the outlay for Sesko. United have already spent big on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo while also bringing in young left-back Diego Leon. A move for Baleba is likely to have to wait until 2026, despite Amorim having limited options in front of the defence. Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023, just a fortnight after the Seagulls sold fellow midfielder Moises Caicedo to Chelsea. The Cameroon international made 34 league appearances last term, scoring his first goals for the club, and was asked about his future in May. "If they can help me, I'll accept that help to push forward and develop. So, I just work to help my team and for myself, to progress for the future," he said. "In return, everyone who helps me wants me to go to the highest level. And if there are big clubs who want me, it's not something that worries me or gets me excited. I just need to work hard and keep a cool head." United's season begins against Arsenal on August 17, and Ruben Amorim's side have impressed in pre-season. They claimed two wins and a draw in their three Premier League Summer Series fixtures, and head coach Amorim has seen plenty of positives. ‌ "I think it's a perfect feeling to go back to Carrington," Amorim said ahead of Saturday's friendly against Fiorentina. "The momentum of the tour was perfect. "We had two weeks to work in a good environment with a good feeling to go back to Carrington. We are near to the start of the season and we are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things."
