Tottenham issue statement as Mathys Tel subjected to vile racist abuse after Super Cup

Daily Mirror4 days ago
Tottenham have come out and said they are "disgusted" after Mathys Tel was subjected to racist abuse on social media following Wednesday night's Super Cup loss to PSG.
The Frenchman stepped up in the penalty shootout but missed the target before facing abuse online. Thomas Frank's side had led 2-0 against the Champions League winners before two late goals saw the French outfit level the contest.
Tottenham then came out second best in a penalty shootout with Tel among the two players to miss. The forward has just made his move to north London permanent and came off the bench in Frank's first competitive game in charge.
The ex-Bayern Munich man failed to hit the target with his effort from 12 yards as the Parisians edged the match to claim the trophy, but Tottenham have been angered by the level of abuse Tel has faced subsequently.
A club statement read: "We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat. Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards - hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.
"We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify. We stand with you, Mathys."

Chelsea failed in bid to sign Tottenham's new £55m 'top-class' star

Chelsea failed in an attempt to sign Tottenham's new £55m 'top-class' star Mohammed Kudus earlier this summer, according to reports. Kudus joined Spurs from West Ham in July and has shined since his switch to north London, conjuring up two assists on his Premier League debut for his new club on Saturday in a 3-0 win over Burnley. Spurs head coach Thomas Frank has already labelled Kudus' one-on-one skills and ability to create opportunities as 'top-class' following his arrival. It has now emerged via The Sun that Chelsea saw a player-plus-cash bid for Kudus rejected by West Ham before he moved to Tottenham. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Kudus was said to be 'high on Chelsea's list' and the Ghana international had even agreed personal terms before Spurs hijacked the deal. Chelsea and West Ham did not strike an agreement with the Blues offering £20m plus Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for Kudus. The west London club felt Dewsbury-Hall was worth £30m – but West Ham did not agree with their valuation – and only saw him as a £20m player. Spurs then swooped in with an initial offer of £50m, which eventually went up to £55m after West Ham negotiated a slightly higher price. Kudus ended up agreeing terms with Spurs and the rest is history as Chelsea eventually sold Dewsbury-Hall to Everton instead for £29m. Tottenham icon Ledley King says Kudus is a 'great signing' for his former club after Chelsea missed out on the player. 'Mohammed Kudus looks [like] a great signing,' King told BetMGM. 'From what I've seen, Spurs have signed a very exciting player. 'I was really impressed with him at West Ham – when Spurs beat them 4-1 at home [last season], he was their best player by quite some margin before he got sent off. 'He's one of those players who looks like he can cause problems whenever he gets the ball. More Trending 'Hopefully with a bit of support around him, he can take his game to the next level and help Spurs progress.' Former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, meanwhile, told football betting site BetVictor: 'I thought Kudus was very bright [in the Super Cup defeat to PSG]. 'No [James] Maddison for most of the season is a huge blow for the team and for the lad himself, I was gutted for him. 'Kudus has come in, though, and I think he could be a very, very good addition.' Schmeichel in no hurry for contract talks but loving every day at Celtic

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel says he is in no hurry to talk with the club about a new contract at Parkhead because his focus in on enjoying football and dealing with the challenges ahead. The Danish keeper arrived in Glasgow as Joe Hart's successor a year ago and enjoyed a successful first season with Premiership and Premier Sports Cup success, as well as a run to the knockout stage of the Champions League. He signed a one-year contract extension in January that takes him through until next summer, with no certainty about what the future holds beyond that. Speaking to STV ahead of his side's Champions League play-off against Kairat Almaty, that will decide whether Celtic get another crack at the League Phase fo the elite competition, he said his own situation was far from a priority. 'No, that's just not how how we operate right now,' he said. 'There's a massive game and all focus is on that. 'I can't imagine that's important to them or to me, at the moment. 'I've got a contract and it is what it is at the moment. We'll take that at some point.' Schmeichel will turn 39 this season, playing well beyond the age that most professionals reach, and just over a year away from what would be a real landmark. He says he's not contemplating either retirement or a definite push towards football at 40. Instead, he takes the view that he should enjoy every day doing a job he loves. 'The way I've looked at it, football is very, very unpredictable,' he said. 'You take nothing for granted. You know, one big injury could finish your career at any point of your life. 'So you take each and every day on its merit. Each game on its merit. And you enjoy every single one of them.' He added: 'For me, I don't think in limitations. I don't think 'I need to get to there' or 'I need to get to here'. 'Every single day it's 'How can we get better? How can I get better? What can I do to to improve not just myself but the people around me? Are we giving enough?' All those kind of things, that's that's how I measure it.' After a sunny day preparing for another European night under the lights at Celtic Park, the veteran international reflected on seeing his dad Peter end a long and decorated career and said it made him appreciate just playing for as long as he can. 'I know if that passion and that love and desire one day starts to starts to wither, then that might be the time to to finish, but I can't see that happening anytime soon. 'But you know I'm just enjoying every single minute of playing. 'I'm very lucky in the sense that I've had a father who's gone through that process. 'I've seen it close up first hand so I haven't gone through, but I feel like I've gone through it. 'So for me, I'm in an incredible position to just enjoy it and there's a long, long, long life after football, hopefully. 'There's a long life after football, so while you're a footballer, I don't think you're ever gonna find a better job in the world. 'It's just about enjoying it, you know. You've seen today, a sunny day with the pitch watered and the Champions League balls out, diving around. 'I mean it's never gonna get better than that.' Russell Martin: Rangers should not be fazed by prospect of Champions League

Russell Martin insisted Rangers should not be fazed by the prospect of joining Europe's elite in this season's Champions League as he rallied his players for the first leg of their play-off tie against Club Brugge at Ibrox on Tuesday. Gers have had a difficult start to the campaign and it was suggested that – after proving out of their depth when they last qualified in 2022 – they are ill-equipped for the continent's premium competition and would be better suited to dropping into the Europa League instead. Martin dismissed any such notion and only sees positives associated with making it into the Champions League within three months of his appointment. 'I think the belief it would give the players would be massive,' he said. 'I think what it would do for the football club financially would be huge. 'So I think if we were able to do it, which I really believe we can, if we can do it and qualify for it, I think it would be brilliant. 'Someone asked me if we've got the squad depth and all that to sustain it, if we need to worry about it. I think let's try and get in there first and qualify. 'We're building a squad that has to compete in Europe, whether it's Europa League or the Champions League, so I think it would be incredibly exciting. It would help us a lot as a football club moving forward. 'Not just financially, but what it would do for the players and their belief. And to then pit yourself against some of the best teams in the world would be a brilliant opportunity for us. 'We have to attack it with everything we've got as a group, as a team and I really believe we can do it.' Although his side have negotiated their opening two Champions League qualifiers against Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen, Martin has come under intense scrutiny already, after some questionable performances and damaging draws in the opening two William Hill Premiership matches. Despite this – and the concerns of his mother – the former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton boss insisted he was invigorated by the demands of life in the Ibrox hotseat. 'I'm more excited than ever really, so it hasn't diminished one bit,' he said. 'I think you have to roll with the punches here for sure and I think early on we understood we were going to have a bit of pain to go through. 'We have to win while we're going through some pain. When you come to this club, you have a chance to have experiences and moments you just don't get at any other football club and tomorrow night can be another night like that. 'I have a lot of people message me who read message boards and stuff who are concerned about me and they just don't have to be. So I keep telling my mum 'don't worry about it, it's all good. I'm enjoying it'. 'I've really enjoyed it. I appreciate the honour of managing this club every day and the gratitude I feel for that. 'I said to the staff as well, so many of them support the club but I think they've lost a bit of joy of being here and working here – so let's get back to that. Let's understand how big this is and how brilliant it could be.'
