Ford's Latest Truck Patent Could Change the Camping Game for Good

Yahoo2 days ago
The Blue Oval has published a design for an overlanding pop-top that's innovative in more ways than one.
Like most OEMs in the industry, Ford typically leaves the development of overlanding equipment to aftermarket suppliers. After all, their specialization creates a competitive product.
However, the Blue Oval appears to have had its eye on the pickup accessories market lately. As evidenced by a recently discovered patent, Ford's engineers are kicking around a few ideas that could change the camping game.
Pickup pop-top
As reported by Carbuzz, Ford filed a patent for a rooftop tent in 2024 — the 'Shelter System Having Deployable Platform' — that was published last week.
While a pop-up sleeper in itself is nothing new, the Blue Oval's engineers have designed this particular patent specifically for use with a pickup. Rather than adapting an existing design developed for the roof of an SUV, Ford's concept takes advantage of a truck bed.
When stowed, the tent acts as an angled aerodynamic tonneau cover — it packs flat and shields the bed while leaving its cargo area unobstructed. However, come time for deployment, it unfolds over top of the cab and creates a spacious overlanding shelter.
In addition to a set of slippery side panels for extra wind-cheating abilities, Ford engineers also envisioned the system featuring some front struts for structural support. It's a slick system in that it forgoes the need for a rear rack common to truck tent setups.
Electric implications
Throughout the patent document, Ford made specific and multiple references to the fact that the pictured pickup was electric. After all, improving aerodynamic efficiency reaps significant benefits when it comes to EV range.
However, even in the absence of its fancy bed-based tent design, the truck doesn't really look like anything that's in the Blue Oval's lineup.
While there are some obvious similarities to the Ford Maverick, the F-150 Lightning is currently the only electric Ford pickup on the market. At this stage, the brand does have a hybrid Maverick, though it's a PHEV.
Considering the recent rumors surrounding Ford's forthcoming affordable battery-powered truck, this patent may give an early look at a soon-to-be-announced vehicle. While you shouldn't hold your breath for a release because of a patent filing, past designs have made the jump to reality.

Data center owners urge US Treasury to keep renewable energy subsidy rules

(Reuters) -The Data Center Coalition, which represents data center owners including Google, Amazon and Microsoft, called on U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to uphold existing rules for wind and solar energy subsidies, saying they have enabled the industry to grow quickly and stay ahead of competition from China. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Tougher rules on how projects can qualify for federal clean energy tax credits could slow development of new electricity generation at a time of surging power demand driven by artificial intelligence and the digital economy. KEY QUOTE "Any regulatory friction that slows down deployment of new generation today directly impacts our ability to meet AI-era electricity demands tomorrow," the coalition wrote in its letter to Bessent. The letter is dated August 4 but was seen by Reuters on Friday. CONTEXT President Donald Trump issued an executive order in July directing Treasury to tighten clean energy tax credit rules, including redefining what it means for a project to have started construction. The industry has relied on the existing rules for the last decade, and advisory firm Clean Energy Associates projected this week that the United States could lose about 60 gigawatts of planned solar capacity through 2030 if stricter "beginning of construction" rules are implemented. BY THE NUMBERS Between 2017 and 2023, the U.S. data center industry contributed $3.5 trillion to the nation's gross domestic product and directly employed over 600,000 workers, according to the DCC. WHAT'S NEXT The Treasury Department is expected to issue updated guidelines as soon as August 18. 5 Popular Stocks Still Worth Buying

When it comes to the stock market, the fastest growth usually comes from small companies, as they have room to run. It's a lot easier for a company worth $5 million to double in value than it is for one worth $1 trillion, for example. Check Out: Read Next: But just because a company is worth a certain dollar amount doesn't mean it's necessarily a good or a bad investment. Many well-known companies, for example, are up a lot in 2025 but are still highly recommended by analysts. Other popular companies have lagged the performance of the overall market in 2025 but still represent good buying opportunities. Here's a look at some big-time companies on both ends of the spectrum that might still be worth buying. Apple (AAPL) Price as of August 7, 2025: $220.03 YTD performance: -11.92% 12-month analyst price target: $233.11 Apple has been a market darling for years, but for the first half of 2025, the bloom came off the rose a bit. A combination of factors have created uncertainty for the company, which never translates to good results for a stock. Concerns over China, tariffs, sluggish artificial intelligence (AI) development and an overall unimpressive new product roster have weighed on the company. However, on July 31, Apple posted its biggest revenue growth since December 2021, putting the company back in the sights of analysts and investors alike, according to CNBC. For You: Amazon (AMZN) Price as of August 7, 2025: $223.13 YTD performance: 1.70% 12-month analyst price target: $261.03 The press has focused more on Amazon founder Jeff Bezos's extravagant Italian wedding than his company in 2025, but that may actually be creating an opportunity in the stock. As the largest online retailer in the world, Amazon benefits across multiple verticals as long as the economy remains strong. While, according to Forbes, concern over a potential recession and the effect of tariffs has held the stock back this year, discretionary spending has proven surprisingly resilient. Although the company might go through cycles, it's a long-term winner. Meta Platforms (META) Price as of August 7, 2025: $761.83 YTD performance: 30.33% 12-month analyst price target: $858.63 Meta Platforms has been on an absolute tear since Nov. 2022. After losing an incredible 64% that year, according to StatMuse, the stock has absolutely soared, gaining 188% in 2023, 67% in 2024 and over 27% YTD thus far in 2025. While those types of gains may scare off some investors, they're an indication of immense momentum and investors can't get enough. The company has been firing on all cylinders, tightening up cost controls, generating new and growing sources of revenue and focusing on AI, the buzzword of the 2020s. Analysts see continued success ahead for the company. Nvidia (NVDA) Price as of August 7, 2025: $180.77 YTD performance: 34.63% 12-month analyst price target: $183.38 Nvidia has been on a multi-decade run, making it one of the best performers in the whole stock market over the past 3-, 5-, 10- and 15-year periods. But analysts think there's no reason to get out now. In fact, some see the AI boom as throwing fuel on Nvidia's engines for years and years to come. The stock is notoriously volatile and got knocked down violently to the mid-90s in the April market selloff, losing more than one-third of its value. But since then, the stock has essentially doubled, showing the appetite investors have for this tech darling. *Victoria's Secret & Co. (VSCO) Price as of August 7, 2025: $21.63 YTD performance: -47.59% 12-month analyst price target: $21.60 Victoria's Secret gets an asterisk because while it is certainly a well-known company that hasn't performed well in 2025, it's also a much riskier option. Retail in general can be a tricky investment and specialty retail often goes through boom and bust cycles, the worst of which can send a company into bankruptcy. Analysts are decidedly tepid on the company's prospects for the next 12 months, but if you're a more aggressive investor, this is definitely a high-risk, high-reward type of stock. Caveats You should never buy any stock that doesn't match your investment objectives and risk tolerance. You should also never buy at stock based on a tip from a friend or a random article on the internet. Do your own research to find out what's really going on with a company's financials and future prospects and make your own decisions, perhaps in consultation with a financial advisor. Remember, even though the stocks on this list are by-and-large long-term winners, many now trade at lofty valuations and have appreciated sharply since the market's April lows. Invest for the long-term so you can recover from any short-term selloffs. Editor's note: Stock information was sourced from Yahoo! Finance and is current as of August 7, 2025. Lexus Sport Concept Revealed in a Surprise Debut at The Quail

Lexus surprised onlookers at Monterey Car Week by showing off a new Sport Concept at The Quail. The new Sport Concept appears to be an evolution of the Electrified Sport Concept that Lexus teased in 2021. Lexus says that the Sport Coupe "blends dynamic and emotional elements into a vision for a next-generation sports car," but we're still in the dark about technical details and production plans. Monterey Car Week is an ideal setting for a surprise reveal, and Lexus has taken the opportunity to unveil a new Sport Concept this morning at The Quail. The rakish coupe is reminiscent of the Electrified Sport Concept that Lexus first teased in 2021, but features a more polished design that looks fit for production. The company has only given vague clues about the Sport Concept's overarching mission, stating that the "future-focused yet truly authentic sportscar signals the way forward for Lexus design." Its look is undeniably striking, with a low-slung silhouette and familiar checkmark headlights integrated into angular cutouts that bookend its front fascia. Lexus With only a few comments to work from, the Sport Concept's technical details are still up in the air. Lexus is currently working on another supercar dubbed the LFR, which is expected to feature a twin-turbocharged hybrid V-8 powertrain. With internal combustion covered on that front, we suspect that the Sport Concept is hiding an all-electric powertrain. Lexus When Lexus initially showed off its Electrified Sport Concept in 2021, the company projected a low-two-second 60-mph time and 430 miles of range courtesy of solid-state batteries. We'll have to wait for more information, but those could also be performance and range targets for the Sport Concept. Lexus Austin Parsons Associate Editor Austin's car fixation began at a young age and at 1:64 scale. Eventually, Hot Wheels weren't cutting it anymore, so he developed an obsession with his father's full-sized 1965 Ford Mustang instead. Desperate to break into the automotive industry, he bartered his way into a job at a local BMW dealership by promising to stop hurling nerdy technical facts at the salesmen who came into the neighboring coffee shop where he worked. That was also around the time when he started writing automotive reviews, news articles, and technical guides for a number of local and international publications. Now at Car and Driver, Austin brings more than 10 years of experience in the automotive industry and an all-so-common love-hate relationship with German engineering to the table. Read full bio
