Govt. tables private school fee regulation Bill amid protest by AAP legislators
Education Minister Ashish Sood on Monday tabled the Delhi School Education (Fee Regulation and Transparency) Bill, 2025, aimed at regulating fee hikes in private schools, in the Assembly on the first day of the Monsoon Session. The Bill was tabled amid a protest by the Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which termed it a 'blueprint for loot'. Speaker Vijender Gupta said detailed discussions will take place on Tuesday. The government had approved the Bill in April amid a stir by parents over the 'arbitrary' fee hikes by private schools in the national capital. Explaining the modalities, the Minister said, 'The Bill will apply to all private unaided recognised schools in Delhi – irrespective of board, land status or minority status. Every school will have to submit its proposed fee structure for the next three academic years. Fees can be revised only once every three years, which will give financial stability to parents, and they will be well informed.' Mr. Sood said strict penalties ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹10 lakh will be imposed for violations of the Bill, and a fine of ₹50,000 for any coercive action on students for non-payment of fees. Alleging that the previous governments entered into 'under-the-table' settlements with private school managements and did not act against 'violations' under the Delhi School Education Act, 1973, Mr. Sood added, 'This issue is not a recent problem, but one that has been troubling parents in Delhi for the past several decades. But now we are taking decisive steps to solve it so that education is not just within the reach of a select few, but accessible to every child.' Barbs exchanged Leader of the Opposition Atishi claimed that 'no public consultations took place' while framing the Bill. In response, Mr. Sood said, 'We have consulted everyone we had to.' Ms. Atishi added that the Bill should be sent to a Select Committee and directions must be issued to reverse all fee hikes during the previous 2024-25 academic session. Earlier in the day, she claimed there is no provision in the Bill for audits and 'it empowers schools, not parents'. Operation Sindoor The Assembly also held a discussion on the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. BJP legislator Shikha Roy said the retaliatory strikes by India should be incorporated in the school education syllabus. 'I request my government to make this [Operation Sindoor] a part of the syllabus for Delhi students as soon as possible,' she said. The discussion on the strikes carried out by the Indian armed forces saw AAP's Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha hit out at the BJP-ruled government at the Centre, prompting the Speaker to order the Opposition MLA to be marshalled out of the House for using 'derogatory language against the Prime Minister'. The Speaker also directed that the words used by the MLA be expunged from the proceedings.

MHA approves CISF's five-year plan to add 70,000 more personnel in next five years
NEW DELHI: Aligning with the expansion plan of industrial units in areas of security concerns, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved a proposal of fresh induction 70, 000 personnel in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in next five years with an aim to recruit 14,000 of them each year, officials said on Monday. The officials said that once the recruitment process gets completed in the next five years, the CISF is set to become a force with a total strength of 2.20 lakh personnel. A senior official said, 'The proposed expansion plan is aligned with the increasing demands of securing critical infrastructure across the nation, including Parliament House, metro networks, airports, industrial units, and strategic installations. Soon industrial units are expected to come up in areas of security concerns like naxal-affected zones and Jammu & Kashmir. Currently the total strength of the CISF is a little over 1.5 lakh, which was nearly one lakh in 2014, the officials said, adding that recently the MHA has given its formal approval to increase the sanctioned strength of the force to 2.20 lakh to meet evolving national security needs. One of the major catalysts for this expansion was the security breach involving coloured smoke bomb episodes inside the Parliament House. In response, the government had decided to assign the security task to the CISF. This was a shift from earlier multi-agency security to a more centralized, specialized model under CISF's command. The role of CISF has expanded steadily with India's economic growth, covering not just public sector undertakings but also private sector units that significantly contribute to the economy. The force now guards nuclear power stations, airports, metro networks, and major industrial hubs -making it one of the most critical arms of India's internal security. Meanwhile, keeping in view the ever increasing demand for internal security duties with regard to combat roles, CISF personnel are also sent for war training in collaboration with the Indian Army, especially after the success of Operation Sindoor. Another senior official said, 'The fresh recruitment drive and training expansion are part of a larger modernisation plan that includes upgrading equipment, adopting tech-based surveillance systems, and improving rapid response capabilities.'

Govt has failed to offer relief to flood victims: Akhilesh
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said even as two dozen districts – including Prayagraj and Varanasi – were hit by floods, the BJP govt has failed to extend relief to people in the affected areas. "When the UP BJP can organise public meetings and rallies for the 'super VVIP', why isn't it conducting relief and rescue operations in flood hit regions of the state," Akhilesh said, adding that the situation was 'concerning' in Prayagraj and Varanasi where people were using boats to commute through lanes and bylanes in residential localities which were inundated in flood waters. The former UP CM said there was an acute shortage of food and clean drinking water for people stranded in flood-hit areas. "Sick people, particularly children, pregnant women and senior citizens, are not getting proper medicines as health services have come to a standstill. There is no power supply in localities facing floods which has only added to the crisis," Akhilesh said. He further said: "More than Rs 20,000 crore each were spent in Prayagraj and Varanasi in the name of Smart City projects but the flood situation in both the districts has not changed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The roads are filled with potholes and rainwater in the two districts," he said. People are unable to perform the last rites of their loved ones because the cremation grounds are inundated, Akhilesh said. "Despite such a crisis, what has left the common man more agitated is that the govt officials responsible for relief operations are more focussed on getting their photographs clicked distributing relief material rather than helping the needy," Akhilesh said. He said there was a serious threat of outbreak of infectious diseases but there seem to be no plan to tackle such situation. He said floodwaters have entered shops and business establishments as well as farm fields leading to heavy financial and crops losses. 'SP TV' launched Lucknow: Samajwadi Party has launched its YouTube channel – 'SP TV' – which will play messages and statements of party president Akhilesh Yadav in the form of a news bulletin every evening.
