London protests LIVE: Hundreds of police deployed amid rival pro-Palestine and counter-demonstrations

Yahoo15-03-2025

Hundreds of police officers have been deployed in central London as a mass pro-Palestinian protest and a rival counter-demonstration take place on Saturday.
Under the Palestine Coalition banner, 'tens of thousands' of protesters are expected to gather near Green Park station from midday, demanding an end to what they describe as "Israel's siege of Gaza". The march will set off via Haymarket at 1pm and conclude with a rally in Whitehall.
Nearby, a counter-demonstration organised by the group Stop the Hate will assemble at Coventry Street, close to Piccadilly Circus, prompting the Metropolitan Police to impose conditions on both protests under the Public Order Act.
Ben Jamal, director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: 'The genocide in Gaza has not ended. It continues by other means - by blocking supplies which are essential to human life. Israel's desire to ethnically cleanse and colonise Gaza has not disappeared; it remains a clear and present danger, which is now evident in the West Bank also.'
The demonstrations coincide with tens of thousands of football fans arriving in the capital ahead of Sunday's Carabao Cup Final between Newcastle United and Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.
Police will also oversee a separate demonstration starting at 3pm near the Royal Mint, protesting plans to build a new Chinese Embassy. The protest is organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China.

A protest is set to take place outside the Tesla centre in Park Royal, west London, urging people to boycott the car manufacturer over owner Elon Musk's political ties and work for the US government.
Tesla has already faced a sharp drop in its share price this year, with growing competition from Chinese electric car makers and backlash over Musk's links to US President Donald Trump and far-right causes.
Organisers are calling on Tesla owners to sell their cars and investors to offload their shares as part of the campaign.

Donald Trump will delay a looming TikTok ban for a third time

President Donald Trump will, once again, give TikTok a temporary reprieve as it faces another deadline to sell itself or face a ban in the United States. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Tuesday that Trump will sign another executive order to extend the deadline. The latest extension — this time for 90 days — is now the third time Trump has punted on a looming TikTok ban since he took office in January . 'As he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark," Leavitt said in a statement reported by CNN . "This extension will last 90 days, which the Administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.' US officials are presumably still negotiating terms of a potential deal that would allow TikTok to remain operational in the United States, though there's been little news on that front since the last extension in April. A number of potential buyers are interested in acquiring TikTok's US business, but officials in China would need to sign off on any agreement. In April, several reports suggested that a deal would likely involve the company's existing US investors rolling over their stakes into a new entity. Those talks were derailed by Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports.

Trump extends TikTok deadline again

President Donald Trump will extend the deadline for TikTok to divest its U.S. assets by another 90 days, the White House said Tuesday, marking the third time enforcement of the 2024 law has been punted. The popular short-form video app has been illegal for companies to support or host online since Jan. 19, but Trump has been granting it unilateral extensions since he took office, saying he has a deal in the works. 'As he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark,' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement on Tuesday. 'This extension will last 90 days, which the Administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.' A reported deal to sell off TikTok got caught in U.S.-China trade tensions earlier this year. Just as the White House was preparing to unveil the finalized TikTok agreement ahead of an April 5 deadline, Beijing called ByteDance — TikTok's China-based parent company — and ordered it to pause the deal after Washington imposed a slew of reciprocal tariffs on China, along with dozens of other countries, a person familiar with the matter said. In Congress, Republicans are increasingly frustrated by the repeated extensions, but are still granting Trump space to negotiate a deal. 'We voted that it should be banned, and I look forward to the day that they can't continue to propagate Chinese talking points,' said Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) on Tuesday before the announcement. Few lawmakers have been willing to voice their frustrations publicly, wary of crossing the president, even as they're frustrated by a TikTok negotiation that shows little sign of movement. One exception is Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich.), the head of the House select committee on China, who warned in a public op-ed in March that nothing short of complete divestment from Beijing would suffice.

Viasat identified as victim in Chinese Salt Typhoon cyberespionage, Bloomberg News reports

(Reuters) -Viasat Inc has been identified as a victim of the Chinese-linked Salt Typhoon cyberespionage operation during last year's presidential campaign, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday. The breach at the satellite communications firm was discovered earlier this year and Viasat has been working with the government in the aftermath, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Viasat did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the report. U.S. officials have previously alleged that hackers targeted telecom companies such as Verizon, AT&T, Lumen, and others, stealing telephone audio intercepts along with a significant amount of call record data. In December, the officials added a ninth unnamed telecom company to the list of entities compromised by the Salt Typhoon hackers and said that the Chinese operatives gained access to networks with broad and full access, enabling them to "geolocate millions of individuals, to record phone calls at will". Targets of Salt Typhoon reportedly included officials connected to the presidential campaigns of both Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. Chinese officials have previously dismissed the allegations as disinformation, asserting that Beijing "firmly opposes and combats cyber attacks and cyber theft in all forms".
