PM Modi speaks to Ghulam Nabi Azad after he falls ill in Kuwait

The Print28-05-2025
BJP MP Baijayant Jay Panda, who leads the delegation of Azad, said on Tuesday that he is stable and under medical supervision.
Official sources said Modi called Azad to enquire about his health and wished him a speedy recovery.
New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke to DPAP leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, a member of multi-party delegations that are in world capitals to convey India's message on terrorism emanating from Pakistan, after the former Union minister took ill in Kuwait and was hospitalised.
Azad's contributions to the meetings in Bahrain and Kuwait were highly impactful, and he is disappointed at being bedridden, Panda said.
Seven multi-party delegations are in different countries to convey India's resolve for zero tolerance on terrorism emanating from Pakistan.
The decision to send the delegations followed a four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan in May that followed the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. They will work to bust the Pakistani narrative of projecting India as the aggressor by underscoring the Pakistan's links to terrorism.
The delegation led by Panda is travelling to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Algeria. PTI KR SKY SKY

CPI(M), Congress to highlight ‘voter fraud' in Thrissur LS polls in campaign against BJP

The ruling front and the Opposition in the State seem set to spotlight alleged voter fraud in the 2024 Thrissur Lok Sabha elections in their campaigning against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the local body elections later in the year. The possibility of electoral malpractices is arguably gaining political traction in Kerala after Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of colluding with the BJP to add over a lakh phoney voters to the electoral list in at least one Assembly segment in a Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka ahead of the 2024 general elections. Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary M.A. Baby told reporters in Thrissur that the contours of the electoral fraud in Karnataka appeared evident in the Thrissur constituency too. He alleged that the ECI helped BJP booth agents add at least 30,000 bogus voters in Thrissur using fudged proof of domicile and forged identities. Charges against ECI Mr. Baby said the ECI had called a meeting of election officials from the Booth Level Officer (BLO) and upwards ahead of the 2024 polls to dilute the voter enrolment process. The ECI had authorised BLOs to add to the voters' list any person who has completed two days of residence in their jurisdiction, if the individual provided the slightest proof of domicile. Earlier, he said, a new voter qualified for the electoral list only if the person provided solid evidence of residence for at least six months. 'Guest workers, passers-by, and people outside the constituency found their way into the electoral list with the ctive collusion of ECI officials and BJP agents who provided them phoney identity proof and addresses of empty houses and apartments in Thrissur,' Mr. Baby said. District Congress Committee president Joseph Taget alleged that the ECI glossed over anomalies on the voters' list flagged by party workers. UDF leader N.K. Premachandran, MP, said the INDIA bloc allies would weigh impeaching the members of the constitutional body. BJP response M.T. Ramesh, BJP's core committee member, rubbished the CPI(M)-Congress claims. He said Mr. Gopi won by over 75,000 votes. He said the surprising victory stung both parties and signalled the end of UDF-LDF 'revolving door' politics in Kerala. 'The CPI(M) and Congress had no complaints about the electoral list during the voter enrolment phase,' he said.

New route, new hope: Vande Bharat links Punjab to Katra in record time

A new Vande Bharat Express train connecting Amritsar to the holy shrine of Maa Vaishno Devi at Katra will start operating from August 11. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the train virtually on Sunday from Bengaluru by waving the green flag online. The train, numbered 26405/26406, will depart from Amritsar daily (except Tuesdays) at 4:25 p.m. under the Northern Railway zone. It will reach Jalandhar at 5.31 p.m. with a 2-minute halt before arriving at Katra by 10 p.m., completing the journey in just 5 hours and 35 minutes. This fast and comfortable service will provide pilgrims a time-saving and convenient travel option. The route of the train will cover Amritsar, Beas, Jalandhar City, Pathankot Cantt, Jammu Tawi, and then Katra. This will be the first Vande Bharat service connecting Amritsar to Katra, adding to the existing popular Vande Bharat trains running on the Delhi-Katra and Katra-Srinagar routes. Ashwani Sharma, the newly appointed working president of BJP in Punjab, who travelled on the train during its trial run, expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for launching this service. He said the train will generate great enthusiasm among devotees traveling to Maa Vaishno Devi's shrine. A local woman welcomed the launch, saying this is a great start for the elderly in Punjab who travel to religious places mostly for darshan. She noted that the long travel duration and overcrowding in other trains often cause difficulties for senior citizens. With this luxury Vande Bharat train covering the distance in 5.5 hours, pilgrims will save significant travel time and enjoy a comfortable journey. Currently, 144 Vande Bharat trains are operational across India. The project was first launched in 2019 between New Delhi and Varanasi and has since expanded to various parts of the country. Talking to media persons, Ashwani Sharma said: "The Vande Bharat train from Amritsar to Maa Vaishno Devi's shrine will boost devotion and enthusiasm among pilgrims. We thank PM Modi and Railway Minister Vaishnaw for this facility." "This train is a boon for Punjab's elderly pilgrims who struggle with long and crowded journeys on other trains. The new service will save their time and ensure a comfortable ride," said a passenger.
