Scot Loeffler leaving Bowling Green to become quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) — Bowling Green coach Scot Loeffler is leaving the Falcons after six seasons to become the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterbacks coach, the school announced Friday.
Loeffler had a 27-41 record at Bowling Green but led the Falcons to back-to-back winning seasons in 2023-24 and three straight bowl games. A national search has begun for his replacement.
'In these last six seasons, Scot built a very successful program in a challenging climate in collegiate sports,' Bowling Green athletic director Derek van der Merwe said. 'More importantly, he built this program while ensuring his team and coaches were truly committed to the values and mission that make this university great.'
Loefler's hiring comes after the Super Bowl champion Eagles promoted Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator following the departure of Kellen Moore, who became the New Orleans Saints' head coach.
Loeffler's coaching career has included stops at Michigan, Central Michigan, Florida, Temple, Auburn, Virginia Tech and Boston College. He also spent a year coaching the quarterbacks for the Detroit Lions.
Loeffler has coached eight quarterbacks who went on to play in the NFL — Tom Brady, Tim Tebow, Brian Griese, Chad Henne, Drew Henson, John Navarre, Logan Thomas and Anthony Brown. Those eight quarterbacks have won a combined 10 Super Bowl championships.

Bookmakers Ponder if Eagles Have the Depth to Pull Off Rare Repeat

National Football League Bookmakers Ponder if Eagles Have the Depth to Pull Off Rare Repeat Published Aug. 21, 2025 12:07 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link The world champion Philadelphia Eagles are aiming to do what only two NFL franchises have accomplished since the turn of the century. That, of course, is winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick's New England Patriots pulled off the historic feat in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, while Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid's Kansas City Chiefs recently ran it back in 2022 and 2023. That's it. Philadelphia kept a ton of its core intact, but every champion goes through offseason subtractions. Offensive lineman Mekhi Becton, pass rushers Josh Sweat and Milton Williams, and cornerbacks Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers all left in free agency. Eagles lifer Brandon Graham retired, too. Nick Sirianni also lost offensive coordinator, designer and playcaller Kellen Moore, who took a head coaching job with the New Orleans Saints. Got all that? The Eagles remain one of the most talented teams in the NFL, per Las Vegas oddsmakers, and they're right near the top of Super Bowl betting boards at every sportsbook. But their depth just ain't what it used to be. And life's different at the top because you're prone to catch other teams' best shots. ADVERTISEMENT "The league is set up for parity," Westgate SuperBook vice president of race and sports John Murray told me from his Vegas office. "It's very difficult to repeat and the only teams who've done it had first ballot Hall of Famers at head coach and quarterback. There's very little separating the top teams every season and so many of the recent playoff games and Super Bowl have come down to the final play or two. "I'm sure the league and TV networks like it that way." Parity or not, the Eagles remain formidable. They're my third-highest power-rated team in the NFL and are still good enough to fly "Over" 11.5 wins. That's because most of their high-octane offensive talent is back in the mix. Star running back Saquon Barkley surged for 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground and added another 278 yards and two scores through the air. He's currently favored to win Offensive Player of the Year at around 6/1. One could wonder, though, is it smart to try and repeat that? Between the regular season and postseason, Barkley touched the ball 482 times. Sheesh. "They'll have to do something about Saquon and the potential wear and tear on his body," Murray said. "He's such a valuable asset for them. We've seen it before with running backs. Even the great ones eventually fall off a cliff." If Philadelphia wants to be the first NFC East team to win back-to-back divisional crowns in 20 years, they'll have to hold off a rising Washington Commanders squad with budding star quarterback Jayden Daniels and an aggressive front office that believes last year was no fluke . The Commanders might live to spoil the party. "I think so, too," Murray admitted. "It's been a tumultuous offseason in Dallas and they have all new coaches. New York isn't a realistic threat to compete. It really comes down to Philadelphia and Washington. The Commanders have a solid front office, good staff and a potential superstar quarterback. "The focus there is putting Daniels in a position to take the next step. If it all works out, it wouldn't shock me if they won the division." At the end of the day, it's difficult to get excited about betting last year's Super Bowl champion to do big things the following year. Every bettor knows they're legit, and every bookmaker knows there's an appetite to bet 'em. Value is almost non-existent. As someone who was gobbling up Philly stock last summer, I find myself staying away this season. The Birds were 7/1 to win the NFC and 15/1 to win the whole enchilada last August. Their current prices are half that. Thanks, but no thanks. Sam Panayotovich is a sports betting analyst for FOX Sports and the BetMGM Network. He previously worked for WGN Radio, NBC Sports and VSiN. 49ers Predicted to Disrupt 2025 NFC Playoff Picture

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. NFL predictions will start to fly out in the coming days and weeks before the start of the regular season. A very popular way predictions are made is through projection models. More news: Bold Bijan Robinson Prediction Could Skyrocket Falcons' 2025 Season A new projection model was shared by The Athletic for the NFC conference, which paints an obvious and very surprising picture. The Philadelphia Eagles have the highest win total at 10.9 wins, along with an 85.7 percent chance to make the playoffs and a 7.6 percent Super Bowl winning chance. Despite it being obvious the Eagles should make some noise in the NFC, the runner-up on this list is quite shocking. According to this projection model, the San Francisco 49ers are in for a huge year. The 49ers have been given 10.4 wins, a 73.3 percent chance to make the playoffs, and a 6.5 percent chance of being in the Super Bowl. Photo byRead more: Report: 49ers Pull Off Massive Trade With Chiefs to Land Second-Round Pick WR This projection may or may not have been done when the 49ers began to lose offensive players nearly every day. So far, the offensive players that are set to miss time are: • Brandon Aiyuk: ACL recovery, out until at least Week 6 • Jauan Jennings: Calf issue + seeking new deal • DeMarcus Robinson: Suspended 3 games • Jordan Watkins: High-ankle sprain • Jacob Cowing: Re-aggravated hamstring That said, the 49ers did pull off a massive trade, bringing in Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs. Moore should line up with Ricky Pearsall to give the team some semblance of playmakers. To be fair, the 49ers were in the Super Bowl during the 2023 season and had a huge misstep in 2024. This was likely due to the injuries the team sustained, which could be an issue that rears its ugly head again. Still, Brock Purdy and company are dynamic when everyone is healthy. Could the 49ers make some noise in the NFC? The short answer is, yes. However, they will need a lot of help on the offensive side of the ball to do so. Patrick Mahomes reveals sobering reality of father's DWI arrest just before Chiefs' 2024 Super Bowl victory

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes revealed in a new docuseries that his father's 2024 DWI arrest, which happened just over a week before the Super Bowl, was a life-altering moment for his dad. Patrick Mahomes Sr. was arrested in February 2024 in Tyler, Texas, on a felony DWI charge, the third such charge for the former MLB pitcher. News of his arrest came just over a week before the Chiefs were due to face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. Mahomes fielded several questions about his father's arrest in the lead-up to the game. But in a new ESPN documentary released Wednesday, "Chiefs Kingdom," Mahomes said it was the media circus he had to face that served as a moment of clarity for the elder Mahomes. "It was during that Super Bowl. It became a story, and so, I had to answer questions about it," Mahomes recalled, via the New York Post. "I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that, like, you can't keep doing the same things." Mahomes Sr. also appeared in the episode, calling the incident "the most embarrassing" struggle he has faced. "It kind of hit home before the Super Bowl last year, when I got in trouble. For him to have to answer questions about me, you know, was probably the most embarrassing thing that I've ever been through in my life," he said. "I called him right after … I said, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry that it's taken away from your time and focus.' … I made a vow that he would never have to deal with anything because of drinking because of me. I haven't had a drink since then." Mahomes' wife, Brittany, also appeared in the episode. She echoed her husband's remarks, adding that their children witnessing Mahomes Sr.'s struggles added to the sobering reality of his actions. "I think it finally hit him that, you know, 'I have my kids watching me, I have my grandkids now that are watching me,'" she said. Mahomes Sr. pleaded guilty to the charge in August 2024 and was ordered to spend 10 days in jail, followed by a five-year probation period. He was criminally charged with DWI on two prior occasions, including one incident on Sept. 12, 2008, in South Dakota, and another on Feb. 26, 2019, in Smith County, Texas. Mahomes Sr. was a pitcher for six different MLB teams from 1992 to 2003, and was famously part of the 2000 New York Mets team that reached the World Series.
