Patrick Mahomes reveals sobering reality of father's DWI arrest just before Chiefs' 2024 Super Bowl victory
Patrick Mahomes Sr. was arrested in February 2024 in Tyler, Texas, on a felony DWI charge, the third such charge for the former MLB pitcher. News of his arrest came just over a week before the Chiefs were due to face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
Mahomes fielded several questions about his father's arrest in the lead-up to the game. But in a new ESPN documentary released Wednesday, "Chiefs Kingdom," Mahomes said it was the media circus he had to face that served as a moment of clarity for the elder Mahomes.
"It was during that Super Bowl. It became a story, and so, I had to answer questions about it," Mahomes recalled, via the New York Post. "I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that, like, you can't keep doing the same things."
Mahomes Sr. also appeared in the episode, calling the incident "the most embarrassing" struggle he has faced.
"It kind of hit home before the Super Bowl last year, when I got in trouble. For him to have to answer questions about me, you know, was probably the most embarrassing thing that I've ever been through in my life," he said.
"I called him right after … I said, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry that it's taken away from your time and focus.' … I made a vow that he would never have to deal with anything because of drinking because of me. I haven't had a drink since then."
Mahomes' wife, Brittany, also appeared in the episode. She echoed her husband's remarks, adding that their children witnessing Mahomes Sr.'s struggles added to the sobering reality of his actions.
"I think it finally hit him that, you know, 'I have my kids watching me, I have my grandkids now that are watching me,'" she said.
Mahomes Sr. pleaded guilty to the charge in August 2024 and was ordered to spend 10 days in jail, followed by a five-year probation period. He was criminally charged with DWI on two prior occasions, including one incident on Sept. 12, 2008, in South Dakota, and another on Feb. 26, 2019, in Smith County, Texas.
Mahomes Sr. was a pitcher for six different MLB teams from 1992 to 2003, and was famously part of the 2000 New York Mets team that reached the World Series.

Matthew Stafford says he's taking a ‘day-to-day approach' in return from injury
As Matthew Stafford got to the podium on Thursday, he joked that he was sure reporters wanted to ask him questions about the paper cut he suffered. The Rams star quarterback, speaking to the media for the first time since training camp, then fielded inquiries about the back injury that kept him sidelined until this week. Stafford, 37, practiced for the fourth day in a row, another small milestone for the 17th-year pro and a team aiming to make a Super Bowl run. 'The good thing is I feel pretty good,' he said. 'The last couple days out there practicing, I was able to do even more than I thought I was going to be able to do the first day, and then I've just been trying to stack days. 'Backs are sometimes interesting things. It's not cut and dry, what's what and how you're going to feel. So I'm really appreciative of our team, our head coach and everybody taking a day-to-day approach with me and doing everything they can to try and help me out. 'I have a feeling of responsibility to our team to do what's right by them and I'm trying to do that as best as I can day in and day out.' Stafford declined to discuss specifics of his injury, which coach Sean McVay has described as an aggravated disc. Stafford said there was not a particular offseason incident that caused the condition and said he has done 'everything under the sun' to be able to return to the field. Asked if he expected to be ready for the Sept. 7 opener against the Houston Texans, he said, 'I'm not going to answer questions like that. … It's probably a day-to-day thing. I'm just doing everything I can to try and be out there for the next practice.' Coach Sean McVay said Stafford looked good throughout the week. 'I've seen a guy that's gotten better,' McVay said. 'He looks like the stud that we know.' Stafford will not travel to Cleveland for the Rams' final preseason game on Saturday, McVay said.

In softball and baseball, girls are getting more visibility at the Little League World Series
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Little League runs World Series tournaments for baseball and softball, and girls are attracting more attention at both this year. On the baseball side, Monica Arcuri from Australia became the 24th girl to play in baseball's Little League World Series and the 11th to get a hit in Williamsport. It's the sixth straight LLWS to include a female player. Meanwhile, the Little League Softball World Series in Greenville, North Carolina, set attendance and viewership records. The game averaged 1.44 million viewers on ABC, making it the most-watched Little League softball game ever. Patrick Wilson, who is in his first season as CEO for Little League International, emphasizes the importance of both programs. When it comes to girl players, 'whether she chooses to play softball or baseball, we want her to have those choices, and if she switches at a certain point, that's OK too,' Wilson said. 'We just want her to participate.' Girls have been allowed to play Little League baseball since 1974, when the Little League Federal Charter was amended from being boys only. That also created Little League Softball. The first girl to make it to the fields of Williamsport was Victoria Roche, who played for Brussels in 1984. Since then, a girl has been seen in the LLWS every few years. And, in 2004 and 2014, there were two, the most famous of which was Mo'ne Davis, a pitcher from Philadelphia who led her team to a win and wound up on the cover of Sports Illustrated. She was named The Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 2014. Australian manager Keith Land said Monica often outperformed boys on other teams. 'Not to be disrespectful, but you've been out hit by a girl,' he said, after Monica's line drive single to center field against Panama. Australia also had a girl on its team last year, Emma Gainesford. Lester Gaunt managed the Pennsylvania team that won this year's Softball World Series and believes that increased viewership also means increased participation. There are over 25,000 Little League softball teams and more than 300,000 participants in more than 25 countries. 'Numbers for West Suburban Little League should go up,' Gaunt said. 'Hopefully some younger players that were on the fence about playing will give it a try.' The Softball World Series winners will be honored at Sunday's LLWS championship. Pennsylvania had an undefeated 5-0 record in the Softball World Series and beat Indiana 1-0 for the title. Winning pitcher Reagan Bills was in tears and at a loss for words in her postgame interview on ESPN. 'I've been watching since I was 5, and I didn't think this was possible,' she said. Growth in the Softball World Series isn't just limited to those watching. The tournament is taking on a larger world stage. Both Brazil and Japan were first-timers to Greenville this season. On the international side, the Softball World Series boasts four regions. In order to encourage female participation, Little League has launched both the Girls with Game Initiative and the Maria Pepe Little League Baseball Legacy Series. The Legacy Series was launched in 2024 as the first all-female baseball tournament in Williamsport. The female presence in baseball-softball also is expanding beyond the Little League level. The Athletes Unlimited Softball League launched in June and provides women an opportunity to play professional softball in the United States. The Women's Professional Baseball League is holding tryouts this weekend in Washington — Davis is among the participants — with plans to launch next summer. Australia is a country with a larger female presence than some. In 2024, Australia hosted its first all-female Little League Baseball national tournament. The girls who compete then get the opportunity to attend the Australia Women's Showcase, which brings together the country's best female baseball players. 'I think it's a pretty worldwide trend,' Land said, 'that women in sports in general are going through the roof.' ___ Alexandra Wenskoski is a student in the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at Penn State.

Kyle Tucker returns to Cubs' lineup after sitting out 3 games
Slumping All-Star slugger Kyle Tucker returned to the Chicago Cubs' lineup Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers after sitting out three games. Tucker batted second and started in right field as the Cubs tried for a fourth straight win over NL Central-leading Milwaukee in the finale of a five-game series at Wrigley Field between the division rivals. Tucker hasn't played since Monday, when he went 0 for 4 in Chicago's 7-0 loss to the Brewers. He's batting .148 (8 for 54) in 15 games in August, and has only two extra-base hits — both doubles — in his last 24 games. The 28-year-old Tucker batted .290 with 17 homers and 52 RBIs in his first 85 games and was an All-Star for the fourth time. Following Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Brewers, Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed Tucker played with a small fracture in his right hand after he got hurt on an awkward slide against Cincinnati on June 1. Counsell suggested that might have contributed to Tucker's slowdown. But Counsell said there are no medical restrictions on Tucker. He merely got time off this week to help him break out of this slump. On Thursday, Tucker downplayed the injury as a cause. 'I don't know how much, like, it really affected my set-up and my swing and everything,' Tucker said. 'It didn't feel great at the time and I kind of dealt with it and obviously you just make adjustments to go out there and play. 'I'm sure other people have some things going on too that they just play with and make the adjustment with." Tucker was acquired in a December trade with Houston. He's eligible for free agency after this season. ___ AP MLB: Matt Carlson, The Associated Press
