Ex-footballer finishes Tour De France challenge

Former Wolves and England footballer Geoff Thomas has completed his seventh Tour De France challenge with the hope of raising £1m for research into leukaemia. Thomas, who lives in Worcestershire, has been part of Tour 21 team which has been following the exact same route as the Tour De France, a week ahead of the professionals racing. He was given just three months to live in 2003 after being diagnosed with leukaemia, but overcame the illness two years later after treatment and a stem cell transplant. He first took part in the challenge for Cure Leukaemia in 2005, when he was six months in remission, and the 2025 race he completed on Sunday is his last, he said. Speaking to BBC Hereford and Worcester after crossing the finish line in Paris, he said the experience had been "magical". "Everyone's been so good on this event. We've bonded as a team," he said. "I think you become like a family and after a few weeks together doing a ridiculously hard challenges every day is a bond that's built for life." "I started this 20 years ago. It was all purely to raise money for Cure Leukaemia and get [professor] Charlie Craddock the funding he needed to fulfil his dream of building a clinical research centre that would fast-track all the wealth of knowledge that's in the science labs to benefit patients. "Over the last 15 years I can say for sure with the infrastructure we've set up, it's working and people are largely being saved on the back of these fantastic guys raising money for a great cause." He said he was not normally an emotional man but seeing his family at the end of the race was tough. "I knew everybody would be here [at the finishing line] and I had a little moment to myself and then when I came here I just wanted to enjoy everyone's enjoyment and see it in their eyes," he added. "I've done it numerous times... but taking on a challenge like that and meeting in Paris is magical." His wife Julie said she was "so proud". "It's just fantastic. It's a huge challenge and I think 90% is your mental state," she said. "I think Geoff being a professional sportsman, I think he just has that drive in him, no matter what's happening to your body, you just get on with it. "I think he doesn't really think about what's going on at the time, he just pushes on for the charity really, for the cause." Thomas, who was appointed an MBE in 2021 for his work raising money for cancer charities, said everyone that took part should be proud of themselves and what they had achieved. "I am proud of them and I'm proud of the charity and that's why I carry on doing this and oddly, even though I was the most unfit I've been taking on this challenge, it's inspired me even more than any other." Liverpool seal Hugo Ekitike deal worth €95 million from Eintracht Frankfurt

Liverpool have sealed the signing of a new striker from Eintracht Frankfurt. By Ravi Kumar Jha Published on July 21, 2025, 18:43 IST Liverpool have sealed the signing of a new striker from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Reds aren't stopping this summer transfer window as they have bought one midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen, namely Florian Wirtz (€100 million+ deal) and now a striker from Frankfurt named Hugo Ekitike (€95 million deal). The deal is done and sealed, only the official announcement is pending. Liverpool were the champions of PL 2024/25 season under Arne Slot and now the manager wants a complete change of the squad to think of the future. Liverpool are not slowing down in the summer transfer window, having sealed the signing of highly-rated striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a blockbuster €95 million deal. While the official announcement is still pending, the deal is understood to be done and dusted. Ekitike becomes Liverpool's second major signing of the window following the €100 million+ arrival of midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The two signings signal the club's clear intent to reshape their squad for the future under Arne Slot. Slot, who led the Reds to a sensational Premier League title in the 2024/25 season, is aiming to build a new era at Anfield. The Dutch manager is reportedly pushing for a younger, dynamic squad capable of dominating for years to come, and Ekitike's addition fits perfectly into that vision. The French forward impressed in the Bundesliga with his pace, technical ability, and eye for goal, attracting interest from several top clubs before Liverpool swooped in to secure his signature. 2025 World Matchplay Darts prediction: Michael van Gerwen vs. Raymond van Barneveld

Two of the biggest icons in the history of pro darts will do battle for what could be the final time Monday at the 2025 World Matchplay. Three-time world champion Michael 'MVG' van Gerwen is a minus-230 favorite over his role model, Raymond 'Barney' van Barneveld, at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. The Dutch legends have faced each other more than 50 times, including in the semifinals of the 2017 PDC World Championships, which was eventually won by van Gerwen. Although neither van Barneveld nor van Gerwen is at the height of his powers, they both possess the ability to play at an all-world level, and will have this tournament circled as the perfect time to get their acts together. For van Barneveld, this also could be his last real crack at glory. The 58-year-old has already retired once, and earlier this year he announced plans to slow down his schedule. For van Gerwen, this tournament simply has to go well. 'Mighty' Mike has lost seven of his past nine matches and is in danger of losing touch with the top players in the world like Luke Littler and Luke Humphries. Raymond van Barneveld is pictured Jan. 24. Getty Images This match, against his friend and hero, should be the spark that van Gerwen needs as he tries to win this tournament for a fourth time. MVG should be able to raise his level against van Barneveld, who has been losing to some soft competition of late.
