Two cops held for abduction, extortion

Two policemen have been booked in a case, suspended from service and arrested for allegedly getting involved in abduction and extortion. The action has been taken on the orders of Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Khalid Hamdani. According to a police spokesperson, the matter came to light when a citizen submitted a formal complaint to the city police chief, alleging that two officials, posted in the Crime Control Department and at Naseerabad Police Station, had extorted money from him. The officials allegedly stopped the complainant, who was riding a motorcycle, threatened him, and forcibly took Rs85,000. The complainant accused the cops of kidnapping him and receiving money. The Potohar SP led the inquiry, which established the allegations. Taking notice of the complaint, the CPO ordered an inquiry into the matter. Following the investigation, a case was registered at the Civil Lines Police Station against the accused who were also taken into custody. Both officers have already been suspended, and departmental disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against them. CPO Hamdani says abuse of power and corruption will not be tolerated under any circumstances and has advised the Rawalpindi police to correct their conduct and otherwise those involved in crime or its facilitation will no longer remain part of the force.

Muggers snatch expensive phones

In mid-October of the current year, the FBR imposed a duty of Rs250 on mobile phones worth Rs15,000 or more while Rs300 was levied on cheaper handsets worth Rs6,000 or more. PHOTO: FILE An armed robbery occurred on Range Road in the jurisdiction of Westridge Police Station in Rawalpindi where robbers snatched expensive mobile phones. The robbers returned one of the phones to its owner, reportedly because it did not meet their preferences. CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, showing a vehicle parked on the roadside as two motorcycle-riding suspects pass by. The footage revealed that the masked suspects return moments later, stop near the vehicle and confront several individuals standing nearby. One of the suspects remains on the motorcycle while the other approaches the group, brandishing a pistol. The armed suspect can be seen forcibly taking mobile phones from a young man and the vehicle's driver. However, in a surprising move, the suspect tosses one of the snatched phones back to the driver, apparently dissatisfied with its quality. Despite the presence of four people at the scene, the robbers fled easily with several high-end mobile phones. One of the bystanders was seen making a phone call immediately after the assailants fled.

ASI booked for harassment, bribery

An assistant sub-inspector has been detained and a case registered against him on charges of misuse of authority, bribery, and harassment of a woman. The action was taken following initial investigations into a complaint. According to the complainant, Alishbah, her mother had lodged a case at the Pattoki City Police Station a few weeks ago, claiming that she had been abducted. The complainant stated that she had not been abducted but had married Muhammad Kashif. Her mother later filed a petition under Section 491 of the CrPC, seeking her recovery. During the investigation, ASI Liaqat summoned Alishbah and her husband to the police station. He asked the husband to leave, assuring him that the police would present his wife in court. Once alone with her, the ASI allegedly subjected her to verbal abuse, physical assault and threats, the complainant alleged, adding that he had harassed her and extorted Rs50,000 from her. Kasur DPO Muhammad Essa Khan initiated an inquiry into the matter. During the investigation, the ASI failed to provide a satisfactory explanation in response to the allegations. The probe confirmed that the ASI had acted unlawfully by interrogating the woman in a room without the presence of a female constable, abusing and threatening her, and forcibly taking money, thereby misusing his official powers. Following the confirmation of the allegations, ASI Liaqat was charged and detained.
