PM Anwar congratulates President Lee on South Korea election victory
He said that this marks a turning point for South Korea, a nation that has emerged from a period of intense contest and scrutiny with resilience and democratic resolve.
'The people have spoken for renewal of trust, of institutions, and of national purpose,' he said in a Facebook post today.
'I welcome the opportunity to work with President Lee to deepen the friendship between our nations: in trade and technology, in peace and security, and the enduring ties between our peoples.
Malaysia-South Korea ties were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024, a milestone reflecting both nations' shared ambitions.
Anwar said Malaysia, as Chair of ASEAN for 2025, hopes to see ASEAN play a more prominent role in South Korea's regional outlook. South Korea currently chairs the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
'As Chairs of ASEAN and APEC in 2025, respectively, Malaysia and South Korea are well placed to lead impactful regional initiatives.
'In a time of global flux, a deeper partnership between Southeast Asia and South Korea will be indispensable to us all,' he said.
Anwar also wished Lee wisdom and success in the journey ahead and said he looks forward to meeting him in Kuala Lumpur this October for the ASEAN Summit, and again in Gyeongju, South Korea, for the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting later that month.
Lee formally began his five-year term today after the National Election Commission (NEC) confirmed his election victory during a plenary session.
The liberal Democratic Party (DP) candidate won the election with 49.42 per cent of the vote, defeating his rival Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party, who garnered 41.15 per cent.

Anwar: Malaysia to continue mediating Cambodia-Thailand talks
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will continue playing a key role in facilitating peace and coordination between Cambodia and Thailand amid ongoing border tensions, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking to reporters after the Budget 2026 consultation session here, today, Anwar said both countries' defence ministers met with him earlier and expressed their commitment to uphold a ceasefire agreement. 'Alhamdulillah, they want Malaysia to continue coordinating. 'Both sides have given their commitment to observe the terms and maintain the ceasefire,' he said. Anwar added that while minor issues still persist, they can be resolved amicably. Asean defence attachés are expected to be involved, but a full-scale Asean intervention is not required at this stage. 'This remains a bilateral matter between Cambodia and Thailand, with Malaysia helping to coordinate. 'China and the US have offered logistical assistance, but they are not directly involved in border monitoring,' he said. When asked why both countries were able to reach an initial agreement, Anwar said the ceasefire alone marked meaningful progress. 'These border disputes go back hundreds of years. What's important is that differing views don't necessarily lead to tension. 'As a maritime nation, Malaysia too has had disagreements with its neighbours, but that has never stopped us from maintaining close and friendly ties,' he said. On Tuesday, Anwar said talks to resolve the border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia are expected to conclude by Thursday. The two countries had previously agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire during a special meeting in Putrajaya on July 28, which was chaired by Anwar himself.

Miti: Malaysia's solar panel exports hit RM11.2b in 2024, India takes bigger slice
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Malaysia recorded an 88 per cent increase in photovoltaic (PV) cell exports to India valued at RM4.65 billion in 2024 versus RM2.47 billion in 2023, said the Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti). In a written reply on the Dewan Rakyat portal, Miti said through the Malaysia International Halal Showcase's (Mihas) Greentech category and the involvement of local solar companies, Malaysia has also identified the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia as potential export markets. This is to counter the decline in PV cell exports to the United States (US) market, it said. 'Miti acknowledges that the US is the largest market for PV cells. Exports to the US started to decline even before it introduced 'reciprocal tariffs. The decline started when the US ended the solar product tax exemption for South-east Asian countries in June 2024. 'The US had granted tax exemptions for solar PV cell imports from Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam from June 7, 2022, to June 6, 2024, to boost its solar industry,' Miti said in respond to a question from Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan) on the latest export figures and the main importing countries of solar panels from Malaysia. He also asked what measures the ministry is taking to ensure that export volume and revenue of local solar manufacturers are not severely affected if the US imposes import tariffs on solar panel products. Based on Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) data, 2024 PV cell exports in the form of modules and panels totalled RM11.2 billion. Of this, RM5.05 billion, or 45 per cent, was exported to the US; RM3.69 billion, or 33 per cent to India; RM1.34 billion or 12 per cent to Vietnam, and the remaining 10 per cent to Pakistan, Ukraine, Türkiye, the Philippines, South Korea and Argentina. Miti has also held several engagement sessions with related ministries such as the Finance Ministry and the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry to introduce policies that support the local industry, such as a localisation policy by setting quotas for local goods in domestic projects. — Bernama
