F1 Academy driver Chloe Chong shares the advice Lewis Hamilton gave her: 'I get goosebumps thinking about it'
The British-Canadian teenager was just 16 during the inaugural F1 Academy season in 2023. Today, at age 18, Chong is still learning how to balance life as a teenager with that of a high-performance athlete.

"There's one part of your life where you're an athlete and you're very focused" on training, media commitments, sponsorship deals, as well as your sport, Chong told Yahoo Canada. But "there's another side of yourself that is just a normal teenager."
"A lot of athletes sometimes feel limited by their sport, that competitive side of their life," she said. "They feel like if they take time to do stuff they really want to do, it shows that they're not trying enough, or they're not working hard enough.
"For me, I've realized that working hard is one part, but I also need to be able to do the things I want to do and not get overly invested in my sport." If you get overly invested, you try too hard. And if you fall out of love with it, "it all goes downhill."
Racing in the #27 Charlotte Tilbury car operated by Rodin Motorsport, Chong is still very much invested — and in love — with racing.
When you're in the thick of it, when you're competing against some of the best and fastest drivers out there, "the whole world slows down," she said. "You don't think about anything except your feelings in the car. That's what keeps me going."
Have you ever wondered what the world's most interesting, successful and talented people are adding to their shopping carts? Yahoo Canada's new series, , is exploring just that. From the supplement regime of professional athletes to supermodel-approved skincare, this is what celebrities actually spend their money on.
F1 Academy is an all-female racing series launched in 2023 by Formula 1 to develop and promote young female drivers in the motorsport industry. The Formula 4-level racing series recently partnered with Netflix for a new docuseries, F1: The Academy, which shines a light on one of the world's most demanding sports.
Chong, who is nicknamed "Miss Second Place" among her peers, said it was fellow driver Lewis Hamilton who told her "don't let anyone tell you no."
"He said, 'nothing's easy. Nothing good comes easily,' which applies to my journey into racing," Chong told Yahoo Canada. So far, in the 2025 season, with eight races behind her, she is sitting in 11th place with 11 points.
His advice "taught me to keep tenacity and keep looking forward and not look back at the mistakes I've made, because everyone makes the same mistakes." Hamilton, who competes in Formula One for Ferrari, "was so inspiring to me," she said. "I get goosebumps thinking about it."
Still in the early stages of her F1 Academy racing career, Chong said the nickname motivates her to work hard and push herself to "always do better."
"Every driver in the championship that I'm racing in will not accept second place as a victory," she said. You always want P1 [first place]. You want world records. You want something above what you've already got. And that's what keeps the sport very interesting, because you're always looking for more."
From her "game-changing" tinted moisturizer to her "go-to" pair of workout leggings, here are five things F1 Academy driver Chloe Chong is Adding to Cart.
Cookie Box Crochet Kit for Beginners
"[My mom] thinks I'm really uncoordinated," so getting into crocheting "started off as a bit of a joke," just to prove her wrong, Chong said.
She said she initially got the kit from Amazon and bet that she could finish it in one day. After that, "it just became a thing."
On travel days, you can spend three to four hours driving to a track or nine hours on a plane, so crocheting is something that's "easy to do" to pass the time, Chong told Yahoo Canada over a video call. "It's a bit mindless" and helps "take my mind off" things.
"My mini goal is to hopefully make [crochet] animals for most of the team that work with me," she said. "I've already made animals for my engineer, for one of the mechanics, and I'm starting to work on something for another engineer."
"It's just a little something for everyone on the team," she continued. "I'm incredibly grateful to have them around and working so hard on my car."
Charlotte Tilbury Unisex Healthy Glow Tinted Moisturizer
Representing Charlotte Tilbury has been the "biggest privilege," Chong told Yahoo Canada.
"I've never been the girliest of girls and I've never been that girl who is super interested in makeup," she said. That said, "I really, really like the [Healthy Glow Tinted Moisturizer] and the [Airbrush Flawless Waterproof Setting Spray]."
While "I'm not one to put on loads of makeup," the tinted moisturizer is "honestly game-changing."
Skincare-wise, Chong said Charlotte Tilbury's famous Magic Cream has helped her skin stay "consistent" and combat any irritation that her racing helmet causes.
"A lot of damage happens to your skin because there's so much friction between the helmet and your cheeks," she explained. Before adopting the Magic Cream in her routine, "I would come home after race weekend and have massive spots on my cheeks and break out everywhere."
This year, since incorporating the anti-aging cream in her routine, "I don't think I've had a single experience of that. My skin has stayed quite consistent."

"I found that with an Apple Watch, I was getting really distracted by all the ping notifications and games. With the Whoop, there's no screen, no nothing, no BS, in other words, but again, it gives me really good data on how I've recovered I am in terms of heart rate variability and how much sleep I've had and the quality of my sleep," Chong told Yahoo Canada.
"It has a cool alarm feature where it vibrates as an alarm, so you just tap it twice to stop the alarm, which I find quite simple."
Wunder Train High-Rise Tight 25"
"I love Lululemon because I'm quite a small, small girl, so it fits my shape well."
"All Lululemon leggings are great," she said. "I've never had leggings that fit so well."
Chong said that what usually "annoys" her about leggings is "they start sliding down." But she's "never had a problem" with these Lululemon ones, which she calls "her go-to."
Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 Bluetooth Earbuds
"I love headphones, I love music," the F1 Academy driver said. "I keep a good two sets of headphones in my bag and I actually have another set of headphones in my race bag, as well.
"I'm a bit of a music geek and they're all different sets of headphones. One set I've tried recently is the [Beats Powerbeats Pro 2]. They have a heart rate sensor in the ear, and they're really, really good," she said, adding that "they don't fall out."

The 2025 Bite of Seattle Is Here
The Bite of Seattle, the city's most famous food festival, has returned right now, this weekend, to Seattle Center. From Friday, July 25, to Sunday, July 27, you'll be able to sample food from hundreds of vendors, watch live cooking demos and competitions, and take in dozens of musical acts, including a funk band called Montlake Traffic. Best of all, admission to the Bite is free. The Bite of Seattle was founded all the way back in the 1980s but has undergone some recent changes. From 2020 to 2022, when pandemic lockdowns put the kibosh on large gatherings, the Bite was cancelled. In 2023, digital payment startup Cheq bought the festival, but that year's event was marked by confusion and long lines as vendors and attendees struggled to use the Cheq app. Cheq then sold the Bite to an events company called Foodieland, which put on a snafu-free Bite last year. This year attendees can expect the usual mix of street food, stunt food (you can buy a huge baby bottle of juice), food from well-known Seattle restaurants, and food from small operations you might never have heard of. And when you're done eating, you can browse the vendors selling arts, jewelry, and other non-food treats. The Bite of Seattle at Seattle Center runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 25, and Saturday, July 26, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 27. For a full list of vendors, musical acts, and live performances, go here. Homer home again Two months after being forced to closed due to a fire, beloved Beacon Hill restaurant Homer is reopening on August 1. 'What a roller coast the last couple months have been,' the owners wrote on Instagram. 'Thank you for all of the check-ins, well wishes, gift card purchases, and reassurances that you'll still be here come August and beyond (but not all at once, please!).' If you're planning a visit to celebrate its return, remember that Homer doesn't accept reservations except for large parties. Sun Sui Wah rebrands Last year, famed dim sum establishment Sun Sui Wah, which has two locations in British Columbia, Canada, opened in Bellevue to a lot of hype, one of several hot new dim sum openings in 2024. The Seattle Times reviewed Sun Sui Wah this week and found it to be lacking. 'From the beginning, the word from dim sum aficionados was that the quality and execution was inconsistent,' the Times wrote, adding that Sun Sui Wah's struggles may stem from a lack of skilled dim sum kitchen workers in the local labor pool. Restaurant management apparently agrees with some of this assessment — owner Ken Tan told the Times he's bought out his Canadian partners and plans to 'rework and rename the restaurant this fall.' Redmond gets a Momoji More Eastside news: The Puget Sound Business Journal reports that Momoji, a Japanese restaurant with two locations, has opened a third in Redmond, specifically in the mixed-used Eastline development, near the Downtown Redmond light rail stop. Owner Steven Han, who founded Momoji in 2011, also owns Umi Sake House. The new Momoji, like the other Momojis, is serving sushi and sashimi plus karaage, yakisoba, and other classic Japanese dishes. Joe Gibbs Racing Re-Signs Denny Hamlin To A Multiyear Extension
Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 Mavis Tire Toyota, poses with the winner sticker on his car in ... More victory lane after winning the NASCAR Cup Series Würth 400 at Dover International Speedway on April 28, 2024 in Dover, Delaware. (Photo by) Joe Gibbs Racing has inked a multiyear extension with Denny Hamlin to continue to pilot the No. 11 Toyota for the forseeable future. 'Joe and everyone at JGR are family to me and have done so much for me over the last 20 years,' Hamlin said in a press release. 'We've had a solid start to this season and we have been able to welcome some great new partners this year, so there are a lot of exciting things happening with our team not only now, but also into the future.' The three-time Daytona 500 winner is one of the most loved (and hated) drivers in Nascar. He is known for bold opinions off the track with his Actions Detrimental Podcast on Dirty Mo Radio. On the track, Hamlin is an aggressive racer with 58 career Cup Series wins. 'I really appreciate Denny and everything he has meant to our organization,' Joe Gibbs, owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, said. 'It is just really special when you think about everything we've experienced over the past 20 years, from that first moment when J.D. (Gibbs) recognized his talent at a test session, until now. It is remarkable in any sport to compete at the level Denny has for this long and we are thrilled he has been able to spend his entire career with us.' Hamlin's No. 11 team has undergone a visual change over the past few years, as FedEx slowly stepped away from its full-season sponsorship package. FedEx decreased its sponsorship to have only 13 races last year before fully backing away from its Nascar partnership this year. But Joe Gibbs Racing has completely rebranded the No. 11 car, inking major deals with new partners, including Progressive, National Debt Relief, ampm, and King's Hawaiian. At 44 years old, Hamlin is the veteran face of the Nascar Cup Series. He has been with Joe Gibbs Racing for over 20 years, signing with the team in 2003. JGR did not say how long the extension is for. Hamlin also co-owns 23XI Racing with Michael Jordan. The team is in the midst of a complicated anti-trust lawsuit against Nascar right now, and the ownership group is attempting to figure out its path forward if Nascar revokes the team's charters.

Mom of Taylor Swift's ex Matty Healy is 'glad' she 'lost' role of mother-in-law
The mom of Taylor Swift's ex Matty Healy is apparently grateful that she's no longer in the pop superstar's orbit. On a July 24 episode of "Watch What Happens Live" with host Andy Cohen, British TV panelist Denise Welch took a swipe at the ex-girlfriend of The 1975 frontman. "Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost," the "Loose Women" presenter said after Cohen asked her about Swift's latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," rumored by some fans to be about Healy. 🚨Swifties🚨notes on The Tortured Poets Department from Matty Healy's mother Denise Welch #WWHL Travis Kelce finally posts Taylor Swift photos on Instagram: See the couple's date nights But Welch quickly clarified that she doesn't "have anything against her at all," adding that "it was just ... it was tricky." Welch added, "You're not allowed to say anything and then she writes a whole album about it?" Welch was appearing on the show opposite "Real Housewives of Orange County" cast member Shannon Storms Beador. The actress then said her son was very happy with his "amazing" and "gorgeous" fianceé Gabbriette Bechtel, whom Welch first called "Gabriella" before correcting herself, telling Cohen they have "moved on." The musician and model announced their engagement in June last year. Swift has moved on, too, with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, widely considered one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. In a twist of fate, Swift's boyfriend hard-launched their relationship on Instagram on July 24 – the same day Welch appeared on "WWHL.". Two years after they first began dating during the summer of 2023, Kelce posted his first photos with Swift: the NFL star player wrote that he "had some adventures this offseason," which included ice skating with Swift and rare glimpses into the couple's date nights. Swift has frequented Kansas City Chiefs games with Kelce's mom, Donna Kelce, a beloved TV personality in her own right. Contributing: Bryan West
