Egypt's Mostafa Mohamed revives scoring touch as Nantes fall to Rennes - Talents Abroad

Al-Ahram Weekly19-04-2025

Egyptian international striker Mostafa Mohamed reignited his scoring touch in France's Ligue 1, netting a crucial second-half equalizer for Nantes in a dramatic 2-1 away defeat to Stade Rennes on Friday.
Adrien Truffert opened the scoring for the hosts in the 23rd minute, but Mostafa Mohamed leveled the score nearly ten minutes into the second half. Mohamed Meite sealed the victory for Rennes four minutes before the final whistle.
Rennes missed an early chance to take the lead in the 13th minute when Arnaud Kalimuendo sent his penalty kick wide of the post.
The hosts eventually broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through captain Adrien Truffert, who fired an angled strike past the Nantes goalkeeper to give Rennes a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Mohamed proved decisive in the 54th minute, rising to meet Louis Leroux's cross and slotting a right-footed finish into the bottom-left corner to equalize.
However, Nantes' task became harder just three minutes later when defender Marcus Coco received a red card for a reckless challenge, reducing the visitors to ten men.
Mohamed was substituted in the 71st minute, and Rennes capitalized on their numerical advantage as Mohamed Meite headed home a cross in the 86th minute to secure the win.
The goal was Mostafa Mohamed's fifth in 26 Ligue 1 appearances this season and his sixth overall in 28 matches across all competitions for Nantes, in addition to one assist.
It also ended a goal drought for the 27-year-old Egyptian, whose last strike was a dramatic winner against Lille on 15 March.
The defeat leaves Nantes in 13th place in the Ligue 1 table with 30 points, while Rennes climb to 10th with 38 points.
Nantes face a challenging home game against league champions Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday in a postponed match from the 29th matchday.

Yamal made big Ballon d'Or statement against France, says De la Fuente

Spain's Lamine Yamal REUTERS/Annegret Hilse (Reuters) - Lamine Yamal's match-winning performance against France in the semi-finals of the Nations League on Thursday has underlined his Ballon d'Or credentials, said Spain manager Luis de la Fuente. The 17-year-old Barcelona sensation lifted Spain to a thrilling 5-4 win over France by scoring twice, which sent the holders through to their third successive Nations League final where they will face Iberian neighbours Portugal. The contest to lift the prestigious golden ball trophy in September is widely seen as one between Yamal and France forward Ousmane Dembele, with both playing crucial roles for their clubs and countries this season. "Yamal has made a statement tonight and shown that he should win the Ballon d'Or," De la Fuente told broadcaster RTVE. "He's the best player in the world and, in my opinion, of course, he deserves to win the Ballon d'Or." The 28-year-old Dembele, a former Barcelona man, can boast of the Champions League, Ligue 1, French Cup and French Super Cup titles this campaign, while Yamal has LaLiga, Spanish Cup and Spanish Super Cup to his name. "I always say the same thing to mum, that I try to give my all," Yamal said. "That is what motivates me and what gets me up in the morning. It is why I play football. It's always best to speak on the pitch. "Dembele is a great player, we saw that in the Champions League, but I am happy that we're the ones in the final." The nominees for the 2025 edition of the Ballon d'Or award, which covers August 1-July 31, will be announced at the start of August, with the ceremony taking place on September 22.
