AST SpaceMobile is still playing catch up to SpaceX's cellular Starlink system. But despite the gap, the company is racing to kick off its own initial service starting about six months from now.
AST's CEO Abel Avellan mentioned the aggressive timeline in an earnings call on Monday. 'The idea is to have a beta service sometime by the end of this year. A commercial service fully open for consumers sometime during early 2026,' he said. 'Our plan is for this service to be text, internet, data and access to applications like video conferencing.'
Avellan mentioned the timeline as SpaceX's cellular Starlink system is already available to T-Mobile customers through a free beta program. In July, the carrier then plans on officially launching the service as 'T-Satellite,' which will cost $10 per month for most consumers, including those on rival carriers.
In contrast, AST has only launched five 'BlueBird' satellites for its own system when it needs at least 45 to 60 satellites to begin offering continuous service across the US and other markets. In addition, the company still has to secure regulatory approval from the Federal Communications Commission before it can commercially offer the service to customers through key partners including AT&T and Verizon.
But in Monday's earnings call, AST provided some details on how it plans to close the gap with SpaceX as both companies vie to provide satellite connectivity to cellular dead zones. In Monday's earnings presentation, the company said it plans on holding five satellite launches over the next six to nine months. (The first launch, carrying a prototype next-generation BlueBird satellite, is scheduled for July though India's space agency.)
In addition, AST anticipates 'orbital launches every one to two months on average during 2025 and 2026," it said. The company is also on track to manufacture 40 second-generation BlueBird satellites for this year, "for over 50 satellites in total."
However, AST executives declined to say how many satellites will be flown during each upcoming rocket launch. So the size of the initial constellation remains unclear. That said, during the call, the company noted it only needs 25 satellites to start offering 'non-continuous' service to users, meaning it can start generating revenue, but at the expense of coverage gaps.
In other words, it looks like the company is betting it can operate around 25 satellites by the end of this year or early 2026. During the call, AST executives also said the company was paying more for its BlueBird satellites, partly because it's trying to move quickly to build the constellation.
'The demand signals we are receiving is to get the service to market as fast as possible,' said AST President Scott Wisniewski. 'So what you're seeing is essentially a little bit of pull forward on launch, in a time when launch is harder to get, so we spent a little bit more than anticipated to get the timeline moving fast.'
The other issue is that Trump's tariffs have been raising the costs for the raw materials to build the satellites. Each BlueBird satellite now costs between $21 to 23 million to manufacture and launch, up from $19 to $22 million. In an FCC filing, AST also notes its longer-term goal is operate 243 satellites by 2028.

T-Mobile layoffs hit IT org at wireless giant

(GeekWire File Photo / Taylor Soper) T-Mobile laid off an undisclosed amount of employees within its IT organization, the Bellevue, Wash.-based wireless carrier confirmed to GeekWire. 'To put T-Mobile in the best position to continue delivering our customers best-in-class digital first experiences, we are evolving our IT organization,' the company said in a statement. 'As we continue to hire for hundreds of new roles, we have eliminated a small portion of positions to realign the focus and structure of some parts of the team. We have offered impacted employees support as they transition.' A spokesperson did not provide details about number of workers impacted. T-Mobile, which recently closed its acquisition of UScellular's wireless operations, reported $17.4 billion in services revenue for its most recent quarter, up 6% year-over-year, and net income of $3.2 billion — up 10% and a quarterly record. T-Mobile, the second-largest wireless carrier in the U.S., added 1.7 million postpaid customers in the quarter. Its stock is up nearly 30% in the past 12 months.

Starlink Just Slashed Prices to a Record Low for New Customers. Here's How to Get It

Starlink has offered plenty of carrots to entice new customers throughout 2025: a free satellite dish ($349 value), a 33% discount off the monthly price and (potentially) a community deal that lets you share the cost with your neighbors. Now, Starlink is reducing the cost of its internet plans even further. The Residential plan, which has advertised speeds between 150 and 250Mbps, is down to $99 per month from its original price tag of $120. Residential Lite, which provides download speeds between 40 and 135Mbps, is discounted $15 to $65 per month. But there's a big asterisk with all of those deals: They only apply in areas where Starlink has an excess of bandwidth. At my address in Seattle, you'd actually have to pay an extra fee of $1,000 because there's such high demand in the city. The areas in which these Starlink discounts are available are the same ones where it had previously offered the free satellite dish. In general these exclude major cities where Starlink is likely experiencing strain on its network caused by too many users. You can currently get the discounted price in areas shown in white. Starlink One analysis published last month by Penn State University found that Starlink's satellites can handle just 6.66 households per square mile before service starts to dip below the minimum broadband speeds set by the Federal Communication Commission. Locating local internet providers According to CNET's sister publication PCMag, the discount only lasts for one year. After that, you'll automatically be switched to the regular price. 'The 12-month promotional period will begin on the activation date of your Starlink kit,' says a Starlink support page. 'After the first 12-months of discounted service, service plan pricing will be subject nominal pricing.' At the same time as it's discounting its monthly plans, Starlink is also cutting the cost of its satellite dish in half from $349 to $175. This discount is available no matter where you live. A representative for Starlink did not respond to a request for comment.

Globalstar (GSAT) Stock Trades Up, Here Is Why

What Happened? Shares of satellite communications provider Globalstar (NASDAQ:GSAT) jumped 3.5% in the morning session after the company announced it has started construction to expand its ground station in Singapore. The satellite communications company announced that construction has started on an expansion of its ground station in Singapore. This project will add two new 6-meter tracking antennas to support its third-generation C-3 mobile satellite system (MSS). The development builds upon a 17-year partnership with Singtel, which hosts the facilities, and is expected to enable expanded service offerings across Southeast Asia. This operational news follows a strong second-quarter financial report from August 8, where Globalstar beat revenue expectations and reported a significant increase in net income, returning to profitability. The combination of strong recent performance and strategic expansion appears to be boosting investor confidence. After the initial pop the shares cooled down to $28.48, up 0.7% from previous close. Is now the time to buy Globalstar? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. What Is The Market Telling Us Globalstar's shares are extremely volatile and have had 41 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. The previous big move we wrote about was 7 days ago when the stock gained 3.1% on the news that the company and Parsons Corporation announced a successful proof of concept for a joint commercial satellite solution. This collaboration integrated Globalstar's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite capabilities with advanced software from Parsons, a leader in national security solutions. The company stated this successful test marked a significant step toward the commercial availability of their joint product. This development paved the way for new commercial satellite solutions, signaling progress in the company's technological and business partnerships. Globalstar is down 10.4% since the beginning of the year, and at $28.48 per share, it is trading 17.1% below its 52-week high of $34.35 from December 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Globalstar's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $5,048. Today's young investors likely haven't read the timeless lessons in Gorilla Game: Picking Winners In High Technology because it was written more than 20 years ago when Microsoft and Apple were first establishing their supremacy. But if we apply the same principles, then enterprise software stocks leveraging their own generative AI capabilities may well be the Gorillas of the future. So, in that spirit, we are excited to present our Special Free Report on a profitable, fast-growing enterprise software stock that is already riding the automation wave and looking to catch the generative AI next.
