AST SpaceMobile: Satellite Service For Consumers Slated For Early 2026

AST SpaceMobile is still playing catch up to SpaceX's cellular Starlink system. But despite the gap, the company is racing to kick off its own initial service starting about six months from now.
AST's CEO Abel Avellan mentioned the aggressive timeline in an earnings call on Monday. 'The idea is to have a beta service sometime by the end of this year. A commercial service fully open for consumers sometime during early 2026,' he said. 'Our plan is for this service to be text, internet, data and access to applications like video conferencing.'
Avellan mentioned the timeline as SpaceX's cellular Starlink system is already available to T-Mobile customers through a free beta program. In July, the carrier then plans on officially launching the service as 'T-Satellite,' which will cost $10 per month for most consumers, including those on rival carriers.
In contrast, AST has only launched five 'BlueBird' satellites for its own system when it needs at least 45 to 60 satellites to begin offering continuous service across the US and other markets. In addition, the company still has to secure regulatory approval from the Federal Communications Commission before it can commercially offer the service to customers through key partners including AT&T and Verizon.
But in Monday's earnings call, AST provided some details on how it plans to close the gap with SpaceX as both companies vie to provide satellite connectivity to cellular dead zones. In Monday's earnings presentation, the company said it plans on holding five satellite launches over the next six to nine months. (The first launch, carrying a prototype next-generation BlueBird satellite, is scheduled for July though India's space agency.)
In addition, AST anticipates 'orbital launches every one to two months on average during 2025 and 2026," it said. The company is also on track to manufacture 40 second-generation BlueBird satellites for this year, "for over 50 satellites in total."
However, AST executives declined to say how many satellites will be flown during each upcoming rocket launch. So the size of the initial constellation remains unclear. That said, during the call, the company noted it only needs 25 satellites to start offering 'non-continuous' service to users, meaning it can start generating revenue, but at the expense of coverage gaps.
In other words, it looks like the company is betting it can operate around 25 satellites by the end of this year or early 2026. During the call, AST executives also said the company was paying more for its BlueBird satellites, partly because it's trying to move quickly to build the constellation.
'The demand signals we are receiving is to get the service to market as fast as possible,' said AST President Scott Wisniewski. 'So what you're seeing is essentially a little bit of pull forward on launch, in a time when launch is harder to get, so we spent a little bit more than anticipated to get the timeline moving fast.'
The other issue is that Trump's tariffs have been raising the costs for the raw materials to build the satellites. Each BlueBird satellite now costs between $21 to 23 million to manufacture and launch, up from $19 to $22 million. In an FCC filing, AST also notes its longer-term goal is operate 243 satellites by 2028.

Economists expect a report coming on Wednesday to show inflation across the country accelerated last month to 2.5% from 2.3%. The Fed has been keeping its main interest rate steady as it waits to see how much Trump's tariffs will raise inflation and how much they will hurt the economy. A persistent increase in expectations for inflation among U.S. households could drive behavior that creates a vicious cycle that only worsens inflation. In other dealings early Tuesday, U.S. benchmark crude oil picked up 31 cents to $65.60 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, also gained 31 cents, to $67.35. The dollar rose to 144.93 Japanese yen from 144.61 yen. The euro slipped to $1.1399 from $1.1421. ___

Sen. Warren asks for contingency plans on national security after Trump and Musk's social media fallout
Sen. Elizabeth Warren is asking Secretary of State Marco Rubio for information on the Trump administration's contingency plans if billionaire Elon Musk breaches his companies' current contracts with the U.S. amid the ongoing public fallout between him and President Trump. In a letter to Rubio as acting national security adviser and obtained by CBS News, Warren said Mr. Trump and Musk's public disagreements about the upcoming reconciliation bill that escalated into a public online spat could "have serious implications for U.S. national security." The Massachusetts Democrat mentioned Mr. Trump's proposal to terminate Musk's government contracts and subsidies, which the world's richest man followed with a threat that SpaceX would "begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately." Musk has since walked back his threat. "No petty social media fight between the president and a billionaire should jeopardize U.S. national security," Warren said. In addition to contingency plans for SpaceX, the senator asked for information regarding the impact on U.S. agencies' satellite communications if Musk's Starlink is turned off. Additionally, she asked Rubio to provide any analysis that the Trump administration has conducted "of its authorities and options under the Defense Production Act to address vendor lock, monopolies, or contractor refusal to meet national security needs." She asked to receive answers to her questions by June 14, whether through a classified briefing or preferably a public response that can be released to Congress and the public, the letter said. Warren has been a vocal opponent of Musk and his involvement in the Trump administration. Last week, she released a report that outlines instances her office has found of Musk benefiting from it. Musk's rocket company has received tens of billions of dollars from the federal government over the last decade, including $3.8 billion in the 2024 fiscal year alone, according to federal records. The bulk of those federal grants are from NASA, which has paid SpaceX billions over the last decade to ferry astronauts and supplies to and from the International Space Station. The agency has also awarded SpaceX upwards of $2 billion in recent years to design and build a lunar lander, as part of NASA's Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the moon for the first time in a half-century. While the public spat appears to have cooled somewhat, Mr. Trump told NBC News' Kristen Welker in a phone interview on Saturday that he has no plans to make up with the mega-billionaire. "I'm too busy doing other things," Trump continued. "You know, I won an election in a landslide. I gave him a lot of breaks, long before this happened, I gave him breaks in my first administration, and saved his life in my first administration, I have no intention of speaking to him." When asked by a reporter Friday if he's still considering rolling back subsidies to Musk as a money-saving move, Mr. Trump suggested he was open to it. "He's got a lot of money, he gets a lot of subsidy. So we'll take a look at that," the president said on Air Force One. "Only if it's fair for him and for the country. I would certainly think about it, but it has to be fair." This isn't the first time the president has needled Musk over his companies' federal subsidies. In a 2022 feud, Mr. Trump claimed Musk would be "worthless" without hefty subsidies for "electric cars that don't drive long enough" and "rocketships to nowhere." The two mended their relationship then and Musk spent hundreds of millions to help elect Mr. Trump in 2024.
