Will the Boston Celtics taking on the Knicks in the East Semis rekindle their rivalry?

Yahoo03-05-2025
Will the Boston Celtics taking on the Orlando Magic in the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals second round series rekindle their old rivalry? The two Atlantic Division foes used to be the worst of enemies on the court, but the Knicks have fallen on hard times for decades now, with a few brief, abortive moments since the 1980s as an exception.
What sort of challenges do the Knicks, big man Karl-Anthony Towns and star point guard Jalen Brunson pose to the Celtics in this series? What are New York's strengths and weaknesses heading into the East Semis? And how much do we need to worry about the injuries nagging star Boston forwards Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown -- and vet guard Jrue Holiday?

NBC Sports Boston's Chris Forsberg and Kayla Burton took some time on a recent episode of their "Celtics Talk" show to talk it over. Check it out below!

Patrick Mahomes, other stars react to Scottie Scheffler's insane chip-in at BMW Championship

The post Patrick Mahomes, other stars react to Scottie Scheffler's insane chip-in at BMW Championship appeared first on ClutchPoints. The FedEx Cup Playoffs head into the final event after Scottie Scheffler won the BMW Championship. He secured his fifth win of the season thanks to an insane chip-in on the 17th hole. Even though he was likely going to take the title anyway, the birdie helped him pull away. Stars like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Hart reacted to Scheffler's inevitability after another great win. 'Scottie is crazy man,' Mahomes said, followed by a bunch of laughing emojis. That is the reaction that most golf fans and fellow professionals have when watching Scheffler. They can't help but laugh at how easy he makes the sport look. 'That was insane Scottie Scheffler,' Knicks' star Josh Hart posted. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr went with, 'Scottie is something else! Insane talent.' Kiper still has it when it comes to evaluating talent. His colleague Mike Greenberg said, 'You can't be serious. #Scheffler.' Scheffler won the BMW Championship without his normal caddie, as Ted Scott was tending to a family matter. But Michael Cromie helped guide him to victory, marking his 18th career win. The Tour Championship is next week at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. Even though he won't get the starting strokes he got last year, Scheffler can become the first player to repeat as the Tour Championship winner. While the PGA Tour season ends next week, Scheffler has one big event left on his calendar. He has already clinched a spot on USA's Ryder Cup team, which is looking to avenge a brutal loss in 2023. The lowlight of that week in Rome was Scheffler and Brooks Koepka losing on the 12th hole in foursomes. Playing some of the best golf in recent memory, he is riding a hot hand with the Ryder Cup just over a month away. The Tour Championship begins on Thursday. Jayson Tatum speaks on Achilles injury for first time

It's been more than three months since Jayson Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon in a playoff game against the New York Knicks, and he recently opened up about his recovery journey in a TikTok posted by the NBA. 'Rehab is tedious, man — six days a week. It's starting to get a little bit better now, I'm out the boot now,' Tatum said. 'Better days ahead, but just trying to take it one day at a time.' The Celtics have not announced a recovery timeline for the Celtics star, who was named to the All-NBA First Team in each of the last four seasons. President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens hasn't ruled out Tatum returning next season, but most players miss at least a year after tearing their Achilles. Tatum has made several public appearances since his injury; he hosted a basketball camp and charity fundraiser in his hometown of St. Louis in July, and attended a New England Patriots practice and briefly spoke at a Celtics community event in Providence. But he hasn't held a media availability and has mostly stayed out of the public eye since the injury. ESPN's Marc Spears reported shortly after Tatum underwent surgery that his father, Justin Tatum, expects his son to return to the floor in 8-9 months. According to that timeline, there's hope he would be available to lace up as early as February. But, earlier this month, Celtics team president Rich Gotham declined to put a timetable on Tatum's potential return when asked about whether the team would be open to clearing him toward the end of next season. 'What I know about JT is that he's gonna do everything he can to put us in the position to make a decision,' Gotham said. 'He's gonna work hard to get back as soon as he can, and we'll see how soon that is. But for right now, we're not really looking at timetables.' Tatum has turned to social media several times since the injury, expressing his frustration in late June on X/Twitter and writing: 'Day 45… this is some bullshit.' And his first interview since the injury, Tatum reflected on those early days. 'You got to be resilient,' Tatum said. '[Those] first six weeks of this was probably the toughest six weeks of any point in my life. Just had to accept it and realize it happened, and now I gotta do everything in my power to get back to who I was.'

Star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown is back on a basketball court

Star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown is back on a basketball court for the first time (that we know of, anyway) since getting knee surgery this offseason. And by most accounts, the Georgia native has been looking much more like his former, springy, athletic self while he has been putting in the work ahead of the NBA's 2025-26 regular season. Brown, looking like he is most of the way back from his recent meniscus repair, wowed fans on the court at a recent charity game in China. Does this tell us something about how he will look on the court next season for the Celtics? Or is this far too small of a sample size and level of competition for his appearance to tell us much of anything? The hosts of the CLNS Media "First to the Floor" podcast, Jake Issenberg, Ben Vallis, and Wayne Spooney, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Check it out below!
