Celtics Receive Blunt Jayson Tatum Reality Check
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Celtics are expected to be heading into a gap year during the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season. Jayson Tatum's injury has completely changed the outlook for the team this year. Along with the torn Achilles that Tatum suffered during the playoffs last season, the Celtics also had to move on from Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis via trades this offseason due to luxury tax implications. Those things combined will be difficult for Boston to overcome. Tatum has been working hard and progressing well in his recovery from the Achilles tear. Unfortunately, there is a good chance that he will miss the entire upcoming year. Read more: Knicks Linked to Possible Late NBA Free Agency Splash One former team fan favorite, Brian Scalabrine, spoke out with a blunt reality check about Tatum. He detailed how coming back in the middle of a season might be a big mistake for the 27-year-old superstar. During a segment on the "Celtics Talk" podcast, Scalabrine made his thoughts clear. "There's a reason (the NBA season) is 82 games," Scalabrine said. "Just watch a playoff game and watch a preseason game: There's so many levels in between. Getting thrown back into the middle of a race where you're trying to get out of the play-in (tournament) and you're playing these meaningful, high-level games, that is not ideal — not (just) for your Achilles, but for your body. There needs to be some build-up." No risks should be taken with Tatum. He is the face of the franchise and will be for many years to come. If he has to sit out for an entire year, then so be it. At the end of the day, the Celtics will be right back to being a championship contender when Tatum is back healthy. Waiting until next season would be worth it. He averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, six assists, and 1.1 steals, while also shooting 45.2 percent from the floor and 34.3 percent from the three-point arc. While he will be missed during the 2025-26 NBA season should he miss it all, the Celtics shouldn't even consider bringing him back if there is any risk about another injury. Goodbye Luke, hello Luka: on the Boston Celtics losing Kornet, signing Garza
Goodbye Luke, hello Luka -- the Boston Celtics have lost backup big man Luke Kornet to the San Antonio Spurs in free agency, and responded by poaching Minnesota Timberwolves big man Luka Garza to help make up for the loss of Kornet. The Spurs stole the Green Kornet away with a $41 million contract covering his next four seasons, leaving the Celtics a bit threadbare in their frontcourt rotation. The addition of Garza will certainly help soften the blow of losing the Vanderbilt alum, but Boston will need to do some work -- potentially a lot of it pending other free agent decisions -- to shore up their big men even with the Garza addition to the team. The folks behind the "NBC Sports Boston" YouTube channel put together a clip that has "Celtics Talk" host Chris Forsberg reacting to the changes to the team's bigs. Check it out below to hear what he had to say.

Will the Boston Celtics taking on the Orlando Magic in the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals second round series rekindle their old rivalry? The two Atlantic Division foes used to be the worst of enemies on the court, but the Knicks have fallen on hard times for decades now, with a few brief, abortive moments since the 1980s as an exception. What sort of challenges do the Knicks, big man Karl-Anthony Towns and star point guard Jalen Brunson pose to the Celtics in this series? What are New York's strengths and weaknesses heading into the East Semis? And how much do we need to worry about the injuries nagging star Boston forwards Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown -- and vet guard Jrue Holiday?
