Former Wisconsin standout placed on injured reserve, ruled out for 2025 NFL season
The Indianapolis Colts placed rookie safety Hunter Wohler on injured reserve on Monday, ending his 2025 season. In addition to Wohler, the Colts also placed offensive tackle Blake Freeland and linebacker Jacob Phillips on IR. In corresponding moves, the team signed cornerback Xavien Howard, linebacker Joseph Vaughn and former Wisconsin Badger linebacker Jake Chaney. Wohler had been one of the Colts' training camp standouts after joining the team as a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft. He tallied a team-leading nine tackles during its preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens, plus recorded several highlight interceptions off superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson during the preceding week's joint practice. The former Wisconsin standout was in the lineup to start the Colts' preseason contest against the Green Bay Packers, though he left the first drive with what is now clearly a major foot injury. As noted, the Colts placing Wohler on injured reserve rules him out for the entire 2025 season. Given his trajectory during training camp, Wohler should have a roster spot locked up entering the 2026 season. Badger fans will have to wait until then to see the team captain and multi-year starter make his impact at the NFL level. He concluded his four-year Wisconsin career with 229 tackles, 12 for loss, two sacks, three interceptions and 13 pass deflections. His best season came as a junior in 2023: 120 tackles, six for loss, one sack, two interception and six pass deflections. Wohler's move to the IR opened up a roster spot for Chaney, who now has a limited time to make a strong impression and earn a practice squad contract. If he can stick with the team, the Colts may soon battle the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most former Badgers on their roster. They're already set to enter the year with running back Jonathan Taylor and center Tanor Bortolini in starting roles. Texas A&M DC discusses Texas A&M's \
Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman was demoted as the program's play caller this offseason, but remains in the same position and will continue to be a significant part in gameplanning while already solidifying himself as an elite recruiter. This was the best move, as coach Mike Elko will resume his previous role with Texas A&M during his time as the Aggies' D-coordinator from 2018-2021. On Tuesday, after Texas A&M's 16th preseason practice, Bateman spoke to the media with plenty of praise for several new defensive additions, including Colorado transfer DE Dayon Hayes and cornerback Dezz Ricks, who are both expected to be essential pieces in the pass rush and secondary. Bateman and Elko see eye to eye sheme-wise, as he provided some insight on whether we'll begin to see Elko's "exotic" third-down packages this season. "Yeah, so last year, you know, we got a a point during the season where, you know, the coverage piece of it was a little big scarier for us than it has been where I think now. We feel really good about that, and also had some edge guys and D-lineman who were pretty good one-one-one pass rushers." During his final season as A&M's defensive play caller in 2021, Elko's third-down packages were a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks, and the players Bateman is referencing excelled in coverage and one-on-one pass rush opportunities, which wasn't always the case last season. With the new additions up front, combined with a cornerback rotation that now features Julian Humphrey and Jordan Shaw, the 2025 pass rush could thrive if the coverage holds up, providing Elko more freedom to send more pass rushers to disrupt offensive rhythm. "I think (Mike) Elko's exotic stuff is in bloom," Bateman stated. "We have a pretty good plan on third down." Texas A&M will open the 2025 season against UTSA on Saturday, August 30. The game will air at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN. Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. Former Wisconsin linebacker signs with NFL team
The Indianapolis Colts signed former Wisconsin linebacker Jake Chaney on Monday. The training camp deal is Chaney's first NFL opportunity after going unselected during the 2025 NFL draft in April. His signing was one of several roster moves by the Colts on Monday. Notably, the team also placed former Badger safety Hunter Wohler on injured reserve, ending his 2025 season. Chaney joins the Colts after an impressive four-year career with the Badgers. After joining the program as a three-star recruit in the class of 2021, he emerged as one of its top linebackers. He appeared in 36 total games from 2022-24, starting 21. He totaled 173 tackles, 15 for loss, five sacks, one interception and one forced fumble in that time. His best season came as a junior in 2023: 80 tackles, seven for loss and three sacks. The Lehigh Acres, Florida, native recently made an appearance at Wisconsin football's 2025 training camp, helping the coaching staff prepare the team for the upcoming season. While that initiative will obviously be put on hold with this NFL playing opportunity, Chaney still has strong ties to the Badger program. The Colts will wrap up their 2025 preseason slate with a road matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Aug. 23. Chaney will get limited time to make his mark with the franchise. His best-case scenario at this late stage of the offseason may be a practice squad contract and a chance to compete for a roster spot down the line.
