CU's storm chasers are studying hailstorms

University of Colorado Boulder's Eric Frew is eager to get a drone in the air. It's June in the Plains, and that means hailstorm season.
Why it matters: Hail causes billions of dollars in damage every year and leads to higher insurance rates nationwide. Yet, we know little about how it forms, says Frew.
What he's saying: "We need better scientific understanding to make better forecast models, to build better homes, and all the things that you can do with a better understanding of this," he tells us hours before he leaves for western Nebraska.
State of play: Frew and his small team of students are part of the largest hail study in decades, dubbed ICECHIP.
It involves roughly 70 private and public researchers, and includes scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder.
Zoom in: The CU team is spending six weeks through the end of June looking for storm clouds on the Front Range and across the Great Plains.
Frew — the director of the Center for Autonomous Air Mobility and Sensing — is tasked with using a drone to map the hailstorm damage from above.
"Our team is actually going right behind the storm to try to image … the full extent of where it fell. And you need all of that information together to really understand what's going on with this hail," he says.
The intrigue: The drone they are using is the inspiration for the one featured in the blockbuster movie "Twisters."
"I want to stress they got the design from us, not the other way around," Frew says with a laugh.
Yes, but: No tornado chasing for this team. Frew says hail can cause more damage and is often hard to detect. "It's not quite as crazy as what the movies look like," he allows. "Although … I worry more about the damage hail can do than a tornado, because you can see the tornado a little bit more easily."

U.S. Department of Energy's(DOE) Argonne National Laboratory is helping researchers explore novel ways to design aeroplanes using its Aurora supercomputer. Known as one of the world's first exascale supercomputers, Aurora can perform over a quintillion calculations per second. A team from the University of Colorado Boulder uses Aurora's exascale supercomputing capabilities with machine learning techniques to dissect the airflow around commercial aircraft. Through this activity, they aim to provide insights to inform the design of next-generation airplanes. 'With Aurora, we're able to run simulations that are larger than ever before and on more complex flows," said Kenneth Jansen, professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado. ​ "These simulations help improve the predictive models that are applied to even more complex cases, such as capturing the flow physics around a full vertical tail and rudder assembly of an aircraft at full flight scale,' he continued. Reason to study the airflow Airplanes often have vertical tails larger than needed for most flights, to tackle worst-case scenarios like taking off in a crosswind with only one engine running. The team of researchers thought that if they could study the physics of the flow better, they could design a smaller tail that is still effective in such scenarios. They are using a tool called HONEE to run detailed airflow simulations. The tool helps model the complex, chaotic behaviour of turbulent air. These high-quality simulations are then used to train AI models called subgrid stress (SGS) models. SGS models are important because they help predict the effects of tiny turbulent air movements that aren't directly visible in lower-resolution simulations, but are crucial for accurate airflow predictions. All about turbulence Traditional turbulence is dependent on two things: extensive stored datasets and slow offline analysis. The team's new method uses machine learning simultaneously with simulation to save time and bypass the need to store massive chunks of data. 'Online machine learning refers to carrying out simulations that produce training data at the same time that the actual training task is carried out,' Rowe said. 'We're ensuring we can examine the simulation fields in real time and extract dynamics as the simulation progresses,' Kenneth Jansen explained. ​ 'On the machine learning side, we're using those same analytics to understand how they impact turbulence models. Machine learning allows us to uncover modelling behaviors that complement and extend our current understanding," he continued. Using this method, the team has built predictive models that can detect the behavior of turbulent air. This approach allows scientists to test new ideas for real-time flow control and evaluate how smaller tail designs can fare in extreme conditions. The tool stack The team uses Aurora's exascale power and advanced tools like HONEE for fluid simulations, SmartSim for real-time data streaming and in-node training, and PETSc for scalable numerical calculations. DENVER (KDVR) — Students at the University of Colorado Boulder are preparing to explore the moon from the comfort of an earthbound room, after designing a robot that can take them to the moon's surface via virtual reality. The student-built robot could help shape the future of lunar exploration — even though it currently lives in a quiet, carpeted office, the university said in a press release. What to expect for severe storms rolling through Colorado on Wednesday In its current state, the robot nicknamed 'Armstrong' is a three-wheeled robot that uses a mechanical arm to pick up and move plastic rocks. An exercise that could potentially develop into a system where robots are controlled on the moon by the use of a 'digital twin,' which is a hyper-realistic virtual reality environment. 'That's what is really exciting about this—you're able to simulate everything in the environment, from the shadows to the texture of the dirt, and then train operators on conditions that are as close to real as possible,' said Xavier O'Keefe, a master's student in aerospace engineering sciences. 'That way, once you get to the moon, you have a higher chance of success.' O'Keefe has been working on the project since he was studying as an undergraduate student at the university. The robot study was funded by NASA and a Colorado-based company called Lunar Outpost. The project is led by CU astrophysics professor emeritus and the Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy's Jack Burns. Burns is part of a team that received a grant from NASA to design FarView, which is a proposed moon observatory, covering 77 square miles and requiring robots to install thousands of antennas, according to the university. As part of the new study, students replicated their lab environment in a video game engine and gauged the performance of people controlling robots who had been trained in VR versus those who hadn't. The study concluded that students who had trained with the digital twin were able to complete tasks 30% faster and were less stressed while doing so. To take one more step towards complete function, the team will begin research on how dust may affect the robots by creating a simulation of the moon's surface. Some Kansas City-area events canceled due to storms expected Friday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A few events that were set for Friday night have been postponed or canceled due to the possibility of storms in the late afternoon hours into the evening. FOX4 meteorologists are tracking the storm and will provide updates on air and online. Some storms are expected to be on the strong to severe side. Joe's Blog: Storms and cold fronts (FRI-7/11) The Crown Center announced that its WeekEnder outdoor movie and music event is canceled Friday due to storms in the forecast. The free event that was supposed to feature live music and a showing of 'Twisters' was originally slated to start at 6 p.m. The next WeekEnder event at Crown Center is set for July 18. The city of Olathe wrote in a Facebook post that the Olathe Live! concert at Stagecoach Park has been rescheduled to Oct. 3 due to the potential for thunderstorms and high winds. The event was also supposed to feature 'Touch-A-Truck' for children. Other outdoor events are still set for Friday evening or might be moved indoors. 'Badges, Bikes & Bats,' organized by several law enforcement agencies in Wyandotte County, is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lions Park in Bonner Springs. In case of rain, the Bonner Springs Police Department says it might move the event to the community center at 200 E. Third St. Updates will be shared on the police department's Facebook page.
