Singapore will create over 3,000 new jobs in its public transport sector in the coming years, driven by major rail network expansions and a national push towards electric buses. Of these, 2,000 roles will be in the rail sector and over 1,000 in the bus sector, according to Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat The upcoming Jurong Region Line (2027–2029) and Cross Island Line (by 2030) are fuelling demand for technicians, engineers, and specialists in data analytics and cybersecurity. In the bus sector, the shift to electric buses is creating workforce needs for bus drivers, technicians, and engineers equipped to handle new vehicle technologies. To support this transition, the government is working with tertiary institutions to prepare students and is offering Continuing Education and Training (CET) programmes for mid-career entrants. Companies like Go-Ahead Singapore are also upskilling current workers to meet the EV challenge. The $900 million Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme , launched in July 2024, will expand bus services in new housing areas, further increasing hiring needs. To attract talent, the government and operators are offering sign-on bonuses, referral incentives, and outreach efforts targeting both fresh graduates and mid-career switchers.Chee emphasised that public transport offers 'meaningful work' and noted that the sector is evolving with 'new technologies' that appeal to younger talent, particularly in areas like predictive maintenance and data-driven decision-making.This talent mobilisation reflects Singapore's dual focus: future-proofing transport infrastructure and building a skilled, tech-ready workforce.

Cut-offs drop in 3rd list; CET results of BMS & BBA may cause seat shift

Mumbai: While some of the leading colleges have closed admissions for their popular courses, such as BA Psychology, after the second list, the cut-offs for other courses, even in other subject combinations for BA, have seen a drop in the third list — some are steep when compared to the first list. Many colleges said they did not get enough applications for BSc to even put out a third list. Even as the Mumbai University (MU) extended the deadline for degree college admissions till June 15 and CET results of BBA/BMS/BCA were out, colleges are now worried about horizontal mobility of students to other courses in the same college. At Jai Hind College, BA saw the sharpest fall, dropping from 92.17% from the first list to 80% in the third, but the psychology seats are already full after the second list. Overall, the third merit list reflected a moderate decline across most courses. BBI registered the largest drop among self-financed programmes, slipping by 3.5 points from 90% to 86.5%. Principal Vijay Dabholkar said their new courses in international accounting and actuarial science and quantitative finance were full. "Many students these days are following social media influencers who are promoting new-age, skill-oriented courses, and therefore there is a huge demand for them. Also, now that the CET results for BBA, BMS is out, many students will leave their existing seats to go for them," he said. Karuna Gokarn, principal, St Xavier's College, said they did not have a third list for most of their courses, except BA, for the subject combinations other than psychology. She said the situation in science is grim. It could not only be because of the new professional courses, but also due to undergraduate science courses in institutes such as IISER and IITs picking up and students preferring it over leading autonomous colleges. At Podar College, commerce programmes remained largely stable — BCom financial markets declined slightly from 94.5% to 92%, and BAF, which opened at a high 95.6%, closed at 93.4%. At Ruia College, third merit list for BA course closed at 84%. Most colleges are expecting cut-offs to improve in the fourth and fifth round. The university issued a fresh schedule on Thursday to include students who were left out from the previous process.

CET Cell receives tepid response to entrance test for undergrad admissions

PUNE: Even after multiple extensions and widespread awareness campaigns, the state Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell has received a lukewarm response to the entrance test for professional undergraduate courses including Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), and Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA). As per the results declared today, only around 72,000 students have registered for the CET this year, which governs admissions to more than 1.05 lakh seats across Maharashtra. This marks the second consecutive year of underwhelming participation since these courses were reclassified as 'professional' under the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in 2023. Before this shift, admissions were based solely on class 12 marks, a system that many stakeholders are now demanding be reinstated. Despite launching the registration process four months ahead of the exam and collaborating with universities and institutions to boost outreach, the state CET Cell struggled to attract adequate numbers. The registration deadline was extended three times, finally closing on March 28, 2025, while every effort was made to reach potential aspirants. A CET Cell official said, 'We launched targeted campaigns, partnered with colleges and universities, and used both digital and traditional media for outreach. Some principals advised us to keep registrations open after class 12 exams, which we did. But the response remained below expectations.' While the number of students registering for the CET has increased by 27% as compared to last year's figure of around 57,000, it remains insufficient to fill the 1.05 lakh seats available. In 2024, the state conducted a second CET round after the first failed to attract enough candidates, yet only 40,000 students eventually took admission. Many private colleges, which host a large share of these courses, are now lobbying the state's higher education department to revert to the previous admission system based on Class 12 results. They argue that the CET requirement has discouraged students, particularly from smaller towns and non-urban backgrounds.
