Sophie Cunningham slams WNBA treatment of Fever guard Caitlin Clark
Superstars in the sporting world are treated differently from their colleagues. Fair or not, it is just the way the world of sports works. They get scrutinized, treated differently by refs, treated differently by fans, and ultimately receive special treatment, sometimes in negative and positive ways, from opposing teams.
Caitlin Clark is a certified superstar and the face of the WNBA, which subjects her to all of the above. Most recently, things got testy in the Indiana Fever's WNBA game against the Connecticut Sun, and tempers flared around Caitlin Clark.
In response, Clark's teammate on the Indiana Fever, Sophie Cunningham, leaned into being a force of backup for Clark as she was seemingly fed up with the treatment that the star guard was receiving. She spoke up to the media about the unfair treatment Caitlin Clark is getting from the WNBA.
"During that, it was just part of the game. I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was a build of for a couple of years now of them just not protecting, you know, the star player of the WNBA. So, at the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates. That's what I do, and I'm a team player," Cunningham said.
Since the spat against the Sun, the Fever dropped their most recent game to the Golden State Valkyries to drop them to 6-6 on the season.
Cunningham's defense of Clark has proven to excite fans of the WNBA and the Indiana Fever. Her jersey has since sold out on the Indiana Fever's official team store, while her social media followings have exploded.

LAS VEGAS — A'ja Wilson scored 24 points in a battle with cold-shooting Caitlin Clark on Sunday to lead the Aces to an 89-81 victory over the Indiana Fever and stop a three-game Las Vegas skid. The Aces (6-7), who won their second WNBA championship in a row just two years ago and expected to contend again this season, entered having lost five of six. Beating the Fever (6-7) could get Las Vegas heading in the right direction. Indiana is 2-3 over its last five. Going back to last season, the Aces are 5-0 against the Fever. The teams will meet twice in Indianapolis later this season. The game was down Las Vegas Boulevard at T-Mobile Arena to accommodate a larger crowd than the Aces' usual home, Michelob Ultra Arena. Las Vegas usually has rowdy fans, but as expected, many spectators wore Clark shirts and jerseys. Indiana's DeWanna Bonner missed her fourth consecutive game for personal reasons. Coach Stephanie White returned to the bench after missing the Fever's previous game at Golden State, also for personal reasons.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rookie Sonia Citron scored a season-high 27 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 12.2 seconds left in overtime, Shakira Austin added 21 points and the Washington Mystics beat the Dallas Wings 91-88 on Sunday. Citron made 9 of 13 from the field, hit a career-best four 3-pointers and had a season-high 11 rebounds. Fellow rookie Kiki Iriafen had 19 points and seven rebounds to go with career highs of six assists and five steals for the Mystics (6-8). Sug Sutton added 15 points. Austin got the ball in the post and kicked it out to Citron for a wide open tiebreaking corner 3 with 12.2 seconds remaining. Rookie Aziaha James, who finished with 11 points, made 1 of 2 from the free-throw line to cut the Dallas deficit to 83-81 with 17 seconds left.
