Revision committee of CBFC likely to decide on Janaki vs State of Kerala on June 26

The Hindu25-06-2025
Close on the heels of the producer firm of the Malayalam feature film JSK – Janaki vs State of Kerala approaching the Kerala High Court alleging delay by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in issuing a censor certificate for the film, the censor board's revision committee is expected to announce its decision on the movie on Thursday.
The High Court will issue a directive based on the decision of the censor board.
Objection to name
The producer firm had on Tuesday sought a court directive to the CBFC to process and issue the censor certificate in a time-bound manner. The firm contended that it had submitted an application in this regard on June 12. But the CBFC has not issued the certificate or raised any formal objection, allegedly due to informal and oral objections to the film's title and the character name 'Janaki', despite having earlier issued a censor certificate for the teaser of the film. This delay is arbitrary and amounts to violation of the petitioner's fundamental rights under Article 19 of the Constitution, the firm said in its petition.
The worldwide release of the film was scheduled for June 27 and any further delay in issuing the certificate would cause irreparable financial and reputational loss, the firm said.

Coolie box office collection day 7: Rajinikanth film drops further, manages to cross ₹220 crore

Coolie box office collection day 7: Rajinikanth's Coolie was one of the most awaited films of the year, and was released last week on August 14 amid sky-high expectations. Even as Rajinikanth's craze ensured that the gangster drama had a record-breaking opening at the theatres, the film has now slowed down around the middle of the first week, collecting below ₹10 crore. Coolie is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. (Also read: Lokesh Kanagaraj teases 'solid' interval block for Rajinikanth in Coolie: 'Spent two years planning it') Coolie box office collection day 7: Rajinikanth's Coolie was released in theatres on 14 August, a day before he completed 50 years in the film industry on 15 August. Coolie sees no growth The latest update on Sacnilk states that Coolie has minted its lowest single-day collection so far since its release, at ₹ 5.5 crore. This huge drop is concerning for Coolie, since it has not yet crossed the ₹250 crore mark. Coolie opened to a staggering ₹65 crore. However, the film showed a 15% dip on Friday and earned ₹54.75 crore. Unfortunately, there was no growth from there on, as Coolie saw further dip during the weekend, collecting ₹39.5 crore and ₹35.25 crore. The Monday figure stood at ₹12 crore, while Tuesday saw a shocking ₹ 9.5 crore. The total collection now stands at ₹ 221.5 crore after 7 days. About Coolie Meanwhile, the producer of Coolie, Sun TV Network Limited's Sun Pictures, has approached the Madras High Court to challenge the A certificate granted to the Rajinikanth film by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The production firm filed a civil miscellaneous appeal against the CBFC's decision. It was pointed out that anyone who applies for a film certification can appeal before the tribunal within 30 days. Produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the film stars Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Sathyaraj in lead roles, alongside Rachita Ram, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, Kanna Ravi, Monisha Blessy, and Kaali Venkat in supporting roles. The film received mixed reviews for its weak screenplay and chaotic plot.

Rapper Vedan Gets Relief From Arrest In Rape Case, Kerala High Court Announces Decision

Published By : Chirag Sehgal IANS Last Updated: According to the FIR lodged in Kochi last month, the complainant alleged that she was sexually exploited by Vedan between 2021 and 2023. For the second day in succession, the Kerala High Court on Wednesday granted interim relief to Malayalam rapper Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, directing that he should not be arrested until his anticipatory bail plea in a rape case is fully heard and disposed of. On Wednesday, the court after hearing the complainant's arguments, posted the case for more hearing to August 25. To this, the counsel for Vedan said the court should give directions that he should not be arrested till his plea is finally disposed and it was granted. Vedan, who has been accused of alleged sexual assault by a woman doctor, has been absconding since the case surfaced. The Kerala Police had earlier issued a lookout notice fearing he might attempt to leave the country. According to the FIR lodged in Kochi last month, the complainant alleged that she was sexually exploited by Vedan between 2021 and 2023. Their relationship began while she was a medical student, and she claims that on at least five occasions in Kozhikode, Kochi, and other locations, he sexually assaulted her under the pretext of marriage. The complaint also mentions that they briefly lived together. She further alleged financial exploitation, stating that in 2021, when Vedan was preparing to release his debut album, she gave him Rs 15,000 on two occasions and another Rs 8,300 to fund his train travel. Their acquaintance reportedly began over social media, but in 2023, Vedan allegedly broke off the relationship, leading to distress and prompting her to file the complaint. Two other women have also since accused the rapper of misbehaviour. When the woman doctor's counsel brought to the attention of the court on Wednesday that there are more women who have filed similar cases against him, the court said cases cannot be clubbed and each case is independent of the other. Vedan, 25, rose to fame under the banner Voice of the Voiceless. He debuted in 2020 and, within the same year, gained recognition as a lyricist in hit films like 'Nayattu', 'Karam', and 'Manjummel Boys'. His socially conscious rap style earned him a large following across Kerala. This is not his first brush with controversy. In April, Vedan was arrested along with eight others following a narcotics raid at his rented apartment near here, though he was later released on bail. Around the same time, forest officials briefly detained him after discovering a tiger's tooth on his necklace. Despite his rising popularity, the present allegations have cast a shadow over the young rapper's career, with the court's next decision on his bail plea eagerly awaited. Akshay Kumar And Arshad Warsi Get Notice, Accused Of Insulting Judiciary In Jolly LLB 3

Jolly LLB 3 features an impressive cast including Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, Saurabh Shukla, Huma Qureshi, Amrita Rao, and Gajraj Rao. A Pune court has issued notices to Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi regarding their upcoming movie, Jolly LLB 3. The notices were issued after a complaint was filed by lawyer Wajid Khan Bidkar, who claimed that the movie mocks the legal system and court proceedings. In his plea, Bidkar argued that Jolly LLB 3 portrays the legal profession in a derogatory manner and insults the judiciary. The petitioner also objected to a scene in the film in which judges are being referred as 'mamu" (a colloquial slang word). Issuing the notices, the court has asked Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi to appear before it on September 28. More details are awaited. Not First Complaint Against Jolly LLB 3 This is not the first time that a complaint has been filed against Jolly LLB 3. In May 2024 too, the film landed in legal trouble when the Ajmer District Bar Association President, Chandrabhan, filed a complaint against the makers of the film, alleging the franchise disrespects the Indian judiciary system. In his complaint, Chandrabhan claimed that the film presents lawyers and judges in an 'inappropriate" way which, he termed, was 'humorous and indecent". Chandrabhan had also urged the court to stop the Jolly LLB 3 shooting. 'This decision has been taken considering the first and second parts of Jolly LLB. It seems that the filmmakers, directors and actors do not respect the dignity and prestige of the judiciary of the country's Constitution at all. The shooting of Jolly LLB 3 is going on in the surrounding villages and areas including the DRM office of Ajmer, which will continue for several days. Even during the shooting of this film, the actors of the film do not seem to be at all serious about the image, prestige and dignity of the judiciary including the judges," Chandrabhan had said as quoted by NBT. What Do We Know About Jolly LLB? The first Jolly LLB film was released in 2013. Its sequel hit theatres in 2017. The first film featured Arshad Warsi and Saurabh Shukla in the lead roles. In the sequel, Akshay Kumar replaced Arshad Warsi. He was also joined by Huma Qureshi. Produced by Star Studio18 and brought to life by writer-director Subhash Kapoor, Jolly LLB 3 features an impressive cast including Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi, Saurabh Shukla, Huma Qureshi, Amrita Rao, and Gajraj Rao.
