Pakistan set to launch $100m mango-export drive on 25th
According to the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association (PFVA), if the target achieved, the move could generate an estimated $100 million in foreign exchange, offering a significant boost to the country's agricultural exports. The export target for the current season is some 25 percent or 25,000 tons higher than last year. However, climate challenges may impact the overall supply of mangoes.
Waheed Ahmed, Patron-in-Chief of PFVA informed that mango production in Pakistan is consistently declining due to climate change and water scarcity and there is a risk of up to 20 percent reduction in total mango production during this year as well.
He said Pakistan typically produces around 1.8 million tons of mangoes annually, with 70 percent of the crop grown in Punjab, 29 percent in Sindh, and 1 percent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 'After the projected 20 percent decline, this season's total production may come down to around 1.4 million tons,' he added.
Waheed said that efforts are underway to boost mango exports to non-traditional markets. 'In addition to our regular buyers, we are targeting Japan, the United States, South Korea, and Australia, while placing special focus on expanding in Turkey and China,' he informed.
He revealed that South Africa is expected to open its market for Pakistani mangoes this season. 'Quarantine experts from South Africa will visit Pakistan during the season, and we hope this will pave the way for mango exports to begin there,' he stated.

Swedish Ambassador Alexandra Berg von Linde stated this in a meeting with Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan on Monday, where they discussed bilateral trade, investment opportunities and other areas of mutual collaboration. The ambassador expressed her condolences over the recent loss of lives and property in Pakistan, caused by heavy rains and cloudburst incidents. Jam Kamal, while terming it a natural disaster, underlined the urgent need for collective efforts to address climate change challenges. During the meeting, both sides reviewed avenues where they could strengthen economic cooperation, with a special focus on trade enhancement. The minister highlighted Pakistan's potential in textiles, readymade garments, IT and technical education, mining, surgical goods and sports equipment, noting that Swedish companies could greatly benefit from investing in those sectors. The ambassador acknowledged Pakistan's reputation in textile exports, noting that Swedish buyers consider Pakistani products among the best in the world. Jam Kamal told the ambassador that, for the first time in Pakistan's history, the government was gradually reducing import tariffs, which would be brought down to 15-20% within the next five years. The policy aims to support exports while allowing imports of quality products not available domestically, which will enable value addition before re-export. He highlighted Pakistan's progress on reforms, especially the establishment of the National Compliance Centre to help local businesses meet national and international standards. He proposed the organisation of seminars in association with the compliance centre to inform foreign companies and diplomatic missions about compliance processes in Pakistan. Both sides identified mining, renewable energy, green technologies, vocational training and skill development as areas for future collaboration. The commerce minister emphasised that Pakistan had a large pool of skilled youth, especially in healthcare, where Pakistani professionals could meet shortages in Europe, including the nursing staff. He underscored that more than 40 Swedish companies, including global brands such as H&M and IKEA, were already sourcing goods from Pakistan, reflecting the strength of bilateral economic ties. He invited Swedish investment in renewable energy, sustainable manufacturing, IT and infrastructure, while encouraging Sweden's participation in the upcoming trade events in Pakistan such as FoodAg 2025. The minister appreciated Sweden's consistent support for Pakistan's GSP Plus status in the European Union and urged continued advocacy during the next review process. He also called for enhanced engagement between Pakistan's central bank and Swedish financial regulators to address the compliance-related issues faced by exporters. Reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to deepening political, economic and people-to-people ties, he said both countries had an immense untapped potential for cooperation.

Govt makes trade breakthrough with Iran
Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, led Pakistan's delegation at the High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Food Security and Agricultural Cooperation held in Tehran, achieving a major breakthrough in transforming Pakistan-Iran trade relations in the agriculture sector. According to a statement from the Ministry of National Food Security & Research (MNFSR) released on Monday, the minister was accompanied by the director general of the Department of Plant Protection (DPP) and the joint secretary of MNFSR. The meeting was co-chaired by his Iranian counterpart, Gholamreza Nourozi, and attended by senior representatives of key ministries, research institutions, and trade authorities from both countries. Hussain secured Iran's agreement to source a major portion of its rice imports from Pakistan. Both government procurements and private sector imports will now rely primarily on Pakistani rice, opening a consistent and stable export market for Pakistan. Addressing longstanding challenges faced by fruit exporters, the minister obtained firm assurances for resolving hurdles in mango exports, particularly delays in import permits and foreign exchange allocations. With these measures in place, exports of Pakistani mangoes to Iran are set to rise substantially. The minister also prioritised Pakistan's livestock and meat sector in the discussions. Iran agreed to focus on Pakistan as a principal supplier and to ensure that around 60% of its meat procurements are sourced from Pakistan. Similarly, Iran agreed to import large volumes of maize from Pakistan, with a commitment to resolve technical and procedural issues on priority and within the shortest possible time. Recognising the need for science-driven solutions in agriculture, the statement adds that both sides agreed to enhance cooperation between the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) and Iranian research institutions. This collaboration will cover key areas of mutual advantage, including crop research, livestock breeding, water management, and innovation for farmers' benefit. The minister further secured consensus on a wide range of facilitation measures aimed at easing agricultural trade. These included faster customs clearance, the establishment of warehouses and cold chain systems, and improvements in border infrastructure to ensure perishable commodities reach markets efficiently and in prime quality. Both countries also reaffirmed their commitment to moving towards a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), providing a long-term framework for expanding bilateral agricultural trade. To ensure that these historic decisions are implemented effectively, a Joint Committee on Agricultural Cooperation was formally established. The committee will meet every six months to review progress, resolve emerging issues, and maintain the momentum of cooperation. Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain thanked the Government of Iran for its constructive approach and warm hospitality. He highlighted the vision of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to strengthen trade ties with neighbouring countries and reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to being a reliable partner in food security and agricultural development. He termed the outcome of the meeting a turning point for both countries, creating new opportunities for farmers, traders, and agribusinesses. He also extended a formal invitation to Minister Nourozi to visit Pakistan to further consolidate this positive momentum, reads the statement. PM gives cabinet's one-month salary for K-P flood relief
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the federal cabinet will donate one month's salary to support flood-affected communities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). He made the announcement while chairing a meeting in Islamabad on Monday to review ongoing relief efforts in flood-hit areas of K-P, Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The prime minister pledged full federal support for affected communities. 'Helping our distressed Pakistani brothers and sisters is our national responsibility,' he said. Under the prime minister's relief package, financial assistance will be provided to the families of the deceased and those affected by the floods. Kashmir and G-B Affairs Minister Engineer Amir Muqam has been tasked with overseeing relief and rehabilitation operations. Sharif directed federal ministers to personally monitor the restoration of electricity, water supply, roads, and other essential services. 'All relevant ministers must remain in affected areas until the last person receives assistance while basic infrastructure is restored,' he said. He instructed the National Highway Authority, Ministry of Communications, and Frontier Works Organization to prioritise repair and maintenance of highways and bridges in the flood-hit areas. The premier also directed the health ministry to send medical teams and establish camps, while the Benazir Income Support Programme will be mobilised to assist flood victims. A briefing during the meeting noted that the federal and provincial governments, the Pakistan Army, and other institutions have established 456 relief camps and conducted 400 rescue operations so far. Relief trucks carrying essential goods are being dispatched, with priority for the hardest-hit areas. The National Disaster Management Authority presented a report on ration, tents, medicines, and other essential supplies. The prime minister directed that the quantity of relief items be increased. PM Shehbaz was briefed that the monsoon season is expected to continue until the second week of September, with six major spells already passed and two more expected, potentially affecting flood-hit areas until the last week of September. Ministers briefed on local situations included Muqam on Swat, Awais Leghari on K-P, Mubarak Zeb on Bajaur, and officials from the National Highway Authority and Ministry of Communications on Malakand and Gilgit.
