Six Nations team news: Penaud blow for France as Ntamack and Dupont return

The Guardian29-01-2025
France's Romain Ntamack is set to line up at fly-half for the first time in almost 18 months but the Six Nations favourites will be without the winger Damian Penaud for Friday night's opener against Wales, adding to a list of key players unavailable for the curtain-raiser at the Stade de France.
Ntamack missed the 2023 World Cup with a knee injury and his planned comeback last November was curtailed by a calf injury, but he will reprise his highly rated combination with the returning captain Antoine Dupont. Penaud had been expected to return to the team but suffered a toe injury in training and Théo Attissogbé will line up on the wing instead.
France are already without the veteran centre Gaël Fickou, the lock Thibaud Flament and the loose forward Charles Ollivon, with Fabien Galthié making five changes in total from the side who beat Argentina 37-23 in Paris in November.
Ntamack's return pushes Thomas Ramos to full-back in place of Léo Barré while Pierre-Louis Barassi replaces Fickou in the midfield and Attissogbé takes Gabin Villiere's place on the wing. The former captain Grégory Alldritt returns to the back of the pack in place of Ollivon after being dropped before the win over Argentina while Alexandre Roumat is in for Flament.
On the bench, Galthié has included Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, who made their debut in Argentina last year but were then arrested on rape charges that were later dropped. The two players, allowed to leave Argentina in September, always denied any wrongdoing and said the sex was consensual. Galthié refused to answer a question about their inclusion. 'We've already answered these questions a lot. Today is the announcement of the French team, on the players who play, those who perform. I will focus on these answers,' he said.
France: Léo Barré (Stade Français), Théo Attissogbé (Pau), Pierre-Louis Barassi (Toulouse), Yoram Moefana (Bordeaux Bègles), Louis Bielle-Biarrey (Bordeaux Bègles), Romain Ntamack (Toulouse), Antoine Dupont (Toulouse, captain), Grégory Alldritt (La Rochelle), Paul Boudehent (La Rochelle), François Cros (Toulouse), Emmanuel Meafou (Toulouse), Alexandre Roumat (Toulouse), Uini Atonio (La Rochelle), Peato Mauvaka (Toulouse), Jean-Baptiste Gros (Toulon) Replacements: Julien Marchand (Toulouse), Cyril Baille (Toulouse), Georges-Henri Colombe (La Rochelle), Hugo Auradou (Hugo Auradou), Mickaël Guillard (Lyon), Oscar Jégou (La Rochelle), Nolann Le Garrec (Racing 92), Émilien Gailleton (Pau).
Wales: Liam Williams (Saracens); Tom Rogers (Scarlets), Nick Tompkins (Saracens), Owen Watkin (Ospreys), Josh Adams (Cardiff); Ben Thomas (Cardiff), Tomos Williams (Gloucester); Gareth Thomas (Ospreys), Evan Lloyd (Cardiff), Henry Thomas (Scarlets), Will Rowlands (Racing 92), Dafydd Jenkins (Exeter), James Botham (Cardiff), Jac Morgan (Ospreys, captain), Aaron Wainwright (Dragons) Replacements: Elliot Dee (Dragons), Nicky Smith (Leicester), Keiron Assiratti (Cardiff), Freddie Thomas (Gloucester), Tommy Reffell (Leicester), Rhodri Williams (Dragons), Dan Edwards (Ospreys), Blair Murray (Scarlets).
The former England prop Henry Thomas will make his first Wales start in Paris. The ex-Sale and Bath tighthead, who also played French club rugby for Castres and Montpellier, has won four caps as a replacement since switching allegiance in 2023. Thomas, whose father is from Swansea, was able to make the move under World Rugby regulations because his last England appearance had been more than three years earlier.
The head coach Warren Gatland also handed a full Test bow to the 23-year-old Cardiff hooker Evan Lloyd, who steps up with Dewi Lake and Ryan Elias injured, against a juggernaut French pack in Paris.
Gatland has selected a back row of Aaron Wainwright at eight alongside James Botham and the captain Jac Morgan. The full-back Liam Williams and the wing Josh Adams – with 151 caps between them – also feature, while the Saracens centre Nick Tompkins is recalled, partnering Owen Watkin in midfield.
Cardiff's Ben Thomas fills the fly-half role, the uncapped Ospreys No 10 Dan Edwards is on the bench and the Exeter lock Dafydd Jenkins makes a first Wales appearance for almost 11 months after undergoing knee and shoulder operations.

There are only four survivors in the Wales starting lineup from the side beaten by South Africa last time out – Thomas, Will Rowlands, Botham and Morgan. But the return of Adams and Williams gives a more-experienced look to a Wales team that contains a combined total of 487 caps. Wales are on a record run of 12 successive Test defeats, while it is six losses in a row against France.
Gatland said the mood among the players has been positive despite their horror 2024. 'They've been outstanding. There's been a good buzz around the group. They've been excellent. The next couple of days, it's about coaches taking a step back and allowing the players to lead.'
On the return of Adams and Williams, the head coach said: 'Part of our thinking was bringing some experience back in and getting some balance in. Having a voice and getting some confidence to those around them.'
Wales are hoping Taulupe Faletau will be fit for the match against Italy in Rome. The Wales No 8 had been expected to make his return after almost 16 months out of Test rugby on Friday, but Gatland says the 104-cap forward feels he is 'not quite ready' for selection. 'He made the call on Tuesday to say he is not quite ready for selection,. He is still part of the squad and he will still come with us. We are hoping he will be right for Italy [8 February].'

Chelsea taking advantage of Strasbourg swap shop yet again with NINE moves in six months

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE Chelsea and Strasbourg swap shop is very much open for business again. The revolving doors between Stamford Bridge and Strasbourg have sent EIGHT players and one coach spinning between the sister clubs in the last six months alone. Some Strasbourg fans are more angry than ever about the relationship, despite the Ligue 1 club enjoying an impressive 2024/5. But the bosses at BlueCo, the company which owns both teams, are using multi-club ownership to move people and money around effectively and, so far at least, with successful results. In recent days, Chelsea have confirmed FIVE deals to take personnel across the Channel to north-east France. Goalkeeper Mike Penders, 20, and attacking midfielder Kendry Paez, 18, went on loan to Strasbourg, with young left back Ishe Samuels-Smith joining the French club in a permanent £6.5m deal. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL LEIP OF FAITH Chelsea stumbling block in Simons chase as Leipzig not interested in stars Blues Under-21 head coach Filipe Coelho has also left Chelsea to become Liam Rosenior's assistant at the Ligue 1 club. And today Chelsea confirmed that 19-year-old defender Mamadou Sarr - just signed from Strasbourg - has been sent on loan there too. At the end of last season Djordje Petrovic and midfielder Andrey Santos returned to the Blues from loan spells at Strasbourg. Both were key members of the side that finished seventh in the French top flight and qualified for the Conference League. Left back Caleb Wiley had half a season at Strasbourg but returned in January after getting injured and then went on loan to Waford. SUN VEGAS WELCOME OFFER: GET £50 BONUS WHEN YOU JOIN Petrovic did well enough to catch the attention of Bournemouth who, after taking Kepa on loan from Stamford Bridge last season, paid £25m to sign the Serb permanently. Santos' performances in France have convinced Chelsea that he can be part of Enzo Maresca's first-team squad for the coming season. To replace Santos at Strasbourg, France Under-20 midfielder Mathis Amougou has arrived from Chelsea on a permanent deal. Drake hints Cole Palmer is inspiration behind his new album name as he shares brilliant video of Chelsea star That is the same Mathis Amougou who joined the Blues from St Etienne for £12.5m on an eight-year contract only in February. Amougou made his Premier League debut against Southampton, but was sold to Strasbourg barely five months after arriving in London. Although Chelsea have a buy-back clause on Amougou, the swift flipping of the player and the sale of Samuels-Smith, who never played a first-team game for the Blues, have raised eyebrows. The fees that Strasbourg have paid will certainly help balance the Stamford Bridge books after another summer of heavy spending. Players can seem like pawns in a game which is as much about compliance with financial rules as on-field performance. 11 Mathis Amougou joined Chelsea in February Credit: Splash 11 Ishe Samuels-Smith moved to Strasbourg without a senior appearance at Chelsea Credit: Getty 11 Mamadou Sarr could be returning to Strasbourg on loan Credit: Getty 11 But it is Strasbourg's sale of Sarr and his potential return on loan that have really annoyed a section of the French club's fans. As well as losing one of their key players after just one season at the club, supporters feel the £12m fee paid by Chelsea was suspiciously low. When you look at the cost of the Amougou deals, you can see their point. Overall, the sense is that as soon as a player does well at Strasbourg, he will be moved to Chelsea to play in the first team or to be sold if he doesn't make the grade. Reports emerged last week that the Blues were close to agreeing personal terms with Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha, ahead of a proposed transfer to Stamford Bridge next summer. You wonder whether any other clubs will be allowed to challenge Chelsea in the bidding for Emegha, who was the Ligue 1 club's top scorer last season. The Blues and Aston Villa have already been warned by Uefa that transfers between the two clubs will be closely monitored for fair value, after the shenanigans of summer 2024. Uefa and the Premier League will take similar interest in deals between Chelsea and Strasbourg. Alexandre Hummel, spokesperson for the Strasbourg Supporters' Club, said: 'With the Sarr move, we are not being allowed to sell in a free market to the highest-bidding team. 'WIth that situation, with Penders and Petrovic, even with the coach who is coming, this is the way that a feeder team is run in US sport. 'Everything is done for the benefit of Chelsea.' BlueCo - the consortium of US-based trio Clearlake Capital, Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, plus Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss - bought a controlling stake in Strasbourg in June 2023, a year after completing their takeover of Chelsea. The French club was always going to be the junior partner in the set-up, just as happens in other multi-club ownership structures like the City Football Group which controls Manchester City and a portfolio of other clubs. But Strasbourg have finished higher in the league in each season of BlueCo ownership and in 2025/6 will enjoy their first proper campaign of European football for 20 years. So it's tempting to ask: what's the problem? Everyone's a winner. And the majority of Strasbourg fans seem to feel that way, for now at least. The multi-club ownership system is not part of the tradition of European football. Alexandre Hummel Hummel, 43, and a Strasbourg fan for 35 years, said: 'I would say that 60 or 70% of people are either non-sensitive to the question or just happy to have good results on the pitch. 'But the organised supporters' groups do not agree with the fact that Strasbourg is being used basically as a reserve team or an U23 team for Chelsea. 'It means our club is no longer independent and no matter what the sporting results on the field are, we feel very bad about that because we value independence. 'The multi-club ownership system is not part of the tradition of European football. 'We have a rich history between the local regional identity and the football club. 'That doesn't fit with having your club being used as some kind of subsidiary to a big empire which is owned by private equity firms in the US. 'There's a lot of arrogance in that. If it was us Europeans telling them how to run the NBA or the NFL, they would laugh at us. 'The French league could become a feeder league and French football would die because of that.' Strasbourg fans have held peaceful protests against BlueCo and the ultras refuse to sing for the first 15 minutes of every game. On top of all the comings and goings between Stamford Bridge and the Stade de la Meinau, Strasbourg have also sold homegrown star midfielder to Sunderland for £30m this summer. Some of those happy with the current situation could change their tune if results deteriorate after the core of last season's successful team has been moved on. But as Hummel admits, people from Strasbourg and the wider Alsace region are renowned for being calm and sensible. The BlueCo bosses would have a much harder time if they tried to pull the same trick in Marseille or Naples. And when the trick seems to be working so well, especially for Chelsea, they will keep on wheeling and dealing with Strasbourg. 11 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Plzen 'agree' €10m deal to sell key man before Rangers clash

The Ibrox club will take on the Czech giants in the third round of Champions League qualifying. The first leg takes place at [[Ibrox]] on Tuesday. Read more: Going into the game, Plzen have agreed to sell Sulc to French side Lyon, reports Fabrizio Romano. The deal could be worth up to €10m once add-ons are included. 🚨🔴🔵 Olympique Lyon agree deal to sign Pawel Sulc from Viktoria Plzen, all done. The midfielder will cost €7.5m plus add-ons up to €10m package, all agreed also on player side. OL beat an Italian club to the signing, now medical next - follows @hugoguillemet. — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 1, 2025 Last season, Sulc scored 20 goals and assisted 15 for his side in all competitions. In the campaign prior to that, he registered 28 goal contributions. The 24-year-old has started this term strongly, too, scoring once and setting up a further three goals in his first four games in the Czech top flight. He won't feature against Rangers next week, though, as he is set to move to France. Plzen captain Matej Vydra reckons the pressure is all on Rangers ahead of the European showdown. He said: "We'll go there to Rangers and give it a go against them for sure. "It's really great that we're already assured of the Europa League now and we don't have to think about what will happen if we get knocked out. "We know that the certainty of the group stages is in our hands and we can be a little more relaxed because the pressure is off. "That could help us. "I'm incredibly proud of this team "We were down twice against Servette - after losing the first leg and then going 1-0 down in Switzerland, so to recover from that shows what we can do. "The joy in the dressing room after the match was unbelievable, I've probably never experienced anything like it here."

Captain Monaghan 'emotional' over Ireland return

Rugby World Cup warm-up: Ireland v ScotlandVenue: Musgrave Park, Cork Date: Saturday, 2 August Kick-off: 14:00 BSTCoverage: Live on BBC iPlayer and website with live text commentary on the website and app Ireland skipper Sam Monaghan says she will "savour every moment" of her return from injury after 13 months on the sidelines. The lock injured her ACL representing her club Gloucester Hartpury in June 2024 before calf and hamstring injuries further delayed her return to action. Now able to see "light at the end of the tunnel", the 32-year-old has been named to start in the second row for Ireland's World Cup warm-up fixture against Scotland in Cork on Saturday. "It was really emotional seeing my name on the teamsheet again, not only for me but for my family, team-mates, everyone that's been on the journey with me, physios, S&Cs," said Monaghan."You build up a hunger. It's kind of like you've been starving for the last 13 months and you finally get your opportunity."I'm sure I'll really savour every moment and just want to do the best I can for the squad around me. They've really looked after me the last year so I'll be extremely excited to get back out on the pitch with them." Monaghan's second row partner on Saturday, Eimear Corri-Fallon, has also struggled with injuries over the past year."Me and Eimear have played together before in Dubai [at the WXV tournament in 2023] and Six Nations so we have that second row connection. "Unfortunately, both of us had a bit of a rough year so we're kind of on the same journey at the minute. It's nice to come back out on the pitch together."Monaghan and Corri-Fallon are not the only returning players to Ireland's panel for what is the first of two warm-up fixtures before the World Cup which begins in England later this Beibhinn Parsons, who broke her leg in December, will also start at Musgrave Park as Scott Bemand's side build towards the tournament where they will be in a pool alongside Japan, Spain and New Zealand. Ireland, however, have already been dealt a series of injury blows with key forwards Dorothy Wall and Erin King ruled out of the World Cup, while 2025 Six Nations Player of the Championship Aoife Wafer is a doubt. "Injuries are always so tough. We've such a strong connection as a group so when we lose someone we really feel it," Monaghan said."On and off the pitch they are such big characters, but they are both working extremely hard and I know how tough a journey it can be."That's high-level sport. It's given the opportunity for someone else to come in and we've had other girls come in and put their hand up and really perform."
